A. mellea is the cause of severe killing in young plantationsof Pinus elliottii in Rhodesia. P. patula is more resistantthough it may act as a carrier of the fungus; its resistancemay be overcome when planted in conditions of high inoculumconcentration such as clear-felled areas of P. elliottii whichhave a previous disease history. The source of infection isthe stumps of felled indigenous trees. Subsequent spread inthe pine is from tree to tree by root contact. The rate of increasein the incidence of the disease up to thirteen years from plantinghas been plotted. An initially logarithmic increase of killingshows a significant decline when the plantation is eight toten years of age. Viable basidiospores of A. mellea are presentin the air spora but little evidence of their importance inthe spread of A. mellea could be found.  相似文献

At two English forest nurseries, transplants of five coniferspecies—Picea sitchensis, Picea abies, Tsuga heterophylla,Abies grandis, and Pinus contorta—were grown with fertilizersupplying N, P, K, and Mg in amounts intended to be adequatefor producing healthy green trees with nutrient concentrationsin the ‘sufficiency range’ as determined by earlierexperiments. ‘Luxury uptake’ of nitrogen was obtainedwith top-dressings of ‘Nitro-Chalk’ applied in thenursery during early September, when top growth had nearly ceased.Tests of the effect of this extra N on forest establishmentwere repeated in four successive years under a wide range ofsoil and climatic conditions, keeping the trees in a cold storeduring each winter and planting them on forest sites in England,Scotland, or Wales during the following spring. Except for Grandfir, nitrogen advanced bud-break of all species during the firstsummer after planting and had no deleterious influence on survival. It tended to increase growth of Sitka spruce during the seasonafter planting, but in later years the differences became smallin relation to tree size. The effects on other species weresmall, except for one considerable decrease in the growth responseof Grand fir at a single site. Frost damage of Sitka spruce of Washington origin was severeon a Welsh and a Scottish site where this frost-sensitive provenancewould not normally be grown. At the Welsh, but not the Scottishsite, the nitrogen treatment increased the damage. In the few experiments (confined to Picea sitchensis) whichtested late-season potassium in the nursery, K concentrationswere increased from deficiency to barely sufficiency level;growth in the forest was increased in two of the four experiments. The extra K had no effect on frost damage.  相似文献

We present an overview of recent studies carried out on Pinus chiapensis (Mart.) Andresen (Pinus strobus var. chiapensis Mart.) and provide management and conservation recommendations. Because of its wood quality, and being commonly used by 12 ethnic groups, this pine is an outstanding forest resource at mid-altitude humid mountains of southern Mexico and Guatemala. P. chiapensis appears to be a distinctive species, closely related with North American white pines, and a potential valuable resource for establishing breeding programs with such species. P. chiapensis is the most abundant tree species in early successional stands of the tropical montane cloud forest playing a key role in ecosystem regeneration particularly in areas managed under slash-and-burn practices. However, many natural stands of this pine are severely reduced. Molecular studies based on isozymes and DNA markers reveal low genetic diversity, the lowest compared with its closest relatives (P. ayacahuite, P. monticola and P. strobus). Heterozygosity and seed viability increase significantly with population size, and inbreeding depression appears to significantly decrease seed viability, suggesting the involvement of genetic factors on population decline. Low population size is associated with both lack of perturbation in well-preserved habitats and high deforestation rates in severely disturbed habitats. Conservation and management practices require preserving and restoring connections between suitable habitats to enhance gene flow between populations, and on careful programs that monitor and control slash-and-burn practices. Restoration practices should use seeds from as many tree sources as possible to reduce inbreeding risks. Spline climate models predict significant increases in temperature, decreases in precipitation and consequently an increase of aridity along the range of P. chiapensis. Thus, assisted migration would be needed to match present genotypes to forecasted climate changes.  相似文献

The advantages of being able to grow Weymouth pine (Pinus strobusL.) on a commercial scale are indicated. The growth of thisspecies in Thetford Forest is described, and the point is madethat serious infection from White Pine Blister Rust (Cronartiumribicola J. C. Fischer) has occurred in dense unthinned plantationsonly. Maintenance of vigour by early heavy thinning, and earlybrashing and high pruning to remove moribund branches, are suggestedas means of minimizing deaths from the disease. Whilst individualWeymouth pines in pure plantations treated in this way are nomore susceptible to Blister Rust than individuals in mixturewith other species, mixed plantations have the advantage ofproviding alternative species for the final crop if the Weymouthpine fails.  相似文献

Observations by the late Dr. M. C. Rayner on a field experimentand the results of subsequent pot-culture experiments demonstratethat the soil activity of mycorrhizal fungi can improve thedevelopment of forest tree seedlings (Picea, Pinus, Betula)before actual mycorrhizal infection takes place. Further experimentsshow that ectotrophic mycelia are capable of stimulating endotrophictree species (Fraxinus excelsior, Cbam?cyparis lawsoniana, Robiniapseudacacia), i.e. that these ectotrophic mycorrhiza-formersbring about growth stimulation of the plant although no infectionis formed at a later stage. It is suggested provisionally thatat least some ectotrophic mycelia, Boletus scaber and Rbizopogonluteolus, may influence seedling growth by attacking soil organicmatter and liberating ‘nutrients’ from which thehigher plant benefits.  相似文献

The main aim of this study was to assess critically the effects of binucleate Rhizoctonia (BnR) inoculation on Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedling and hypocotyl root architecture and early plant growth in tree seedling nursery soil, Sphagnum peat and forest humus. The BnR isolates (251, 266, 268, 269) stimulated early seedling growth in the nitrogen-limited nursery soil 86 days postinoculation (p.i.). These seedlings exhibited significantly higher root length and reduced root width, although percentage root infection levels were <6%. At a harvest 240 days p.i., no significant plant and root growth differences were identified, although short root numbers were significantly increased. BnR infection detected in roots was characterized by the presence of intercellular fungal hyphae and subtending intracellular monilioid fungal cells located in outer cortical cells of long roots. Similar endophytic infection morphology was detected in adventitious roots generated in prerooted hypocotyl cuttings [Kaparakis, G. & Sen, R. (2006). Scandinavian Journal of Forest Research, 21] exposed to all BnR isolates in nursery peat and forest humus, although isolate-specific cutting growth was detected. In conclusion, these BnR isolates, known to be genetically related to orchid mycorrhizal Ceratorhiza spp., are non-pathogenic and have the capacity to stimulate significantly early Scots pine root development in nursery soils and forest humus.  相似文献

Dothistroma pini Hulbary, not hitherto reported in Britain,is described. Since 1954, and possibly before this date, ithas caused serious defoliation of nursery pine stock, particularlyof Pinus nigra and P. ponderosa. It has been reported only fromtwo nurseries both in the Wareham area, Dorset, but the reasonfor this extremely limited distribution is unknown. Attacksare worst in wet summers. Spore inoculations on potted plantsgave severe infection.  相似文献

The rate of accumulation of carbon in forest plantations inBritain is estimated using the record of forest planting since1925 and a model that calculates the flow of carbon from theatmosphere to trees, litter, soil, wood products and back tothe atmosphere. It is assumed that all trees planted so farhave the carbon accumulation characteristics of P. sitchensis,Yield Class 14 m3 ha-1 a-1, but that future planting could includeF. sylvatica Yield Class 6 and Populus Yield Class 12. It isfurther assumed that conifer plantings increase surface litter, but not soil organic matter, whereas broadleaved tree plantings(on mineral soils) increase both. Because the current forest estate is relatively young, it isestimated to be accumulating about 2.5 million tonnes of carbonper year (1990), and to be still increasing in carbon density(tonnes C ha-1). In order to maintain this rate of carbon removalfrom the atmosphere, planting would need to continue at a rateof 25–30 thousand ha of conifers or (theoretically) 10thousand ha of poplars per year (on good mineral soils). Itis noted that 2.5 million tonnes C is about 1.5 percent of theUK carbon emission, and may be similar to the natural carbonsink in Britain represented by wetlands and rivers.  相似文献

The response of nursery seedlings and wildings of oriental beech(Fagus orientalis Lipsky) to canopy gap size was studied ina climax beech forest in northern Iran with respect to seedlingsurvival, shoot growth and vitality. These parameters were followedfor 2 years after planting in gaps of 50, 200 and 600 m2, aswell as in the open field. Foliage coloration was used as acriterion for vitality. The survival rate of nursery seedlingsand wildings dropped rapidly with increasing gap size from 84per cent in 50-m2 canopy openings to  相似文献

In direct-seeded woodlands and nursery seed-beds, weeds canrapidly invade newly sown areas, leading to death or suppressionof tree seedlings. Hand weeding is usually expensive, and thesafe use of broad-spectrum contact herbicides is seldom possible.Hence in the work reported here, the tolerance of young treeseedlings to the potentially more selective, post-emergenceherbicides clopyralid, cycloxydim and metazachlor, was tested.Seedlings of Fraxinus excelsior L. (ash) with two to four expandedtrue leaves (2–4 ETL), Fagus sylvatica L. (beech) (2–4ETL), Acer pseudoplatanus L. (sycamore) (4–6 ETL), Prunusavium L. (cherry) (6–8 ETL) and Quercus robur L. (oak)(6–8 ETL) appeared to tolerate applications of cycloxydimat a rate of 0.45 kg a.i. ha–1. Applications of 0.2 kga.i. ha–1 clopyralid or 1.25 kg a.i. ha–1 metazachloralso appeared to be generally tolerated, but did cause somesuppression of annual growth increment in Q. robur, P. avium,F. sylvatica and A. pseudoplatanus, particularly where repeatapplications were made to the earliest growth stages. Seedlingsurvival was unaffected by any herbicide treatment. Mixturesof all three herbicides were no more damaging than the sameherbicides applied separately. Therefore, depending on treespecies and growth stage, it appears that clopyralid could potentiallybe safely used to control a range of herbaceous weed species, metazachlor a variety of seedling or germinating weeds and cycloxydima range of established grass weed species, in direct sown woodlandsor nursery seed-beds, although further research is advisableto confirm crop safety.  相似文献

In developing countries seedlings are often produced in small-scale nurseries as a means to raise tree planting materials and, provided they are of high quality, these can form the basis for successful forest plantation initiatives. This study uses morphological characteristics to assess the quality of seedlings of three tree species (Persea americana, Cola acuminata and Dacryodes edulis) in the Western Highlands of Cameroon. The growth characteristics and quality indicators of seedlings produced in two nursery categories were compared—three nurseries collaborating with the tree domestication program implemented by the World Agroforestry Centre (Category 1) and three nurseries collaborating with government and non-governmental projects (Category 2). Seedlings produced in nurseries in the first nursery category were found to be uniform in terms of growth characteristics and quality indicators. In the second category, there were relatively higher seedling proportions having measured parameters out of threshold standards for root to shoot ratio and for sturdiness quotient. Significant differences between nursery categories (at α = 0.05) were detected in root collar diameter of C. acuminata and D. edulis and in shoot dry weight of D. edulis. These differences could be attributed to better nursery management as a results of training and technical backstopping received by nursery operators in Category 1. The level of experience of nursery operators in both categories was found to be insufficient and greater exposure to skills and knowledge could enhance the production of high quality seedlings.  相似文献

Small farms in Appalachia are economically challenged due to complex topography and soil constraints that limit productivity. Most farms have considerable acreage in forest, some of which is on the least productive sites, which contributes little income. The purpose of this study was to determine management and microclimate impacts on the establishment of an agro-forest for increasing the economic value of the forested land resource. A 1.2 ha forest clear-cut was planted with red oak (Quercus rubra) as the desired mature forest species alternated with rows of Chinese chestnut (Castanea mollissima), pawpaw (Asimina triloba), hazelnut (Corylus americana), and white pine (Pinus strobus) for generating income as the forest matures. Oak and chestnut required protection from deer. Oak had the lowest survival rate (61%) and chestnut had the highest survival rate (94%). While providing protection, Tubex plastic tubes also resulted in spindly tree growth. Plastic tubes did, however, improve pawpaw survival. Oak did best on well-drained locations. Chestnut and hazelnut were negatively impacted by forest edge more than oak or pawpaw. Overall there was a high degree of variability in tree growth suggesting that on low productivity sites, a planting density substantially higher than the desired final stand may be warranted to optimize the tree-vigor/micro-site match. The results of an experiment to investigate the early growthand form of ten different provenances of Norway maple (Acerplatanoides L.) are described. Two sites were planted and after8 years survival was 88 per cent and 95 per cent and heightincrement was 402 cm and 201 cm; confirmmg the potential ofNorway maple to be a productive forest tree. Provenances thatperformed well were from Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark andYugoslavia; exact locations were not known for all seed collections.A provenance from Russia was included, material from this fareast has rarely been tested in Britain. However, as expected, its performance was relatively poor. The main constraint tofurther planting of Norway maple is the palatability of thebark to grey squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis Gmelin.). However,it is a useful tree for high pH and heavy soils and as an alternativespecies to sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus L.).  相似文献

The recent outbreak of Lophodermium needlecast in North America first appeared in 1966 in forest nurseries on red pine (Pinus resinosa) and Scotch pine (P. sylvestris). Dispersal of infected nursery stock throughout North America has created a serious needlecast problem in Scotch pine Christmas tree plantations. Two biotypes of L. pinastri are present. The pathogenic strain may be a recent introduction. The fungicides maneb and chlorothalonil are being used for control.  相似文献

Biodiversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) colonization and AM fungal spores were studied in the roots and rhizosphere soils of Acacia catechu (L.f). Wild., A. mangium Willd, Anthocephala cadamba Miq., Artocarpus chaplasha Roxb., Chickrassia tabularis A. Juss., Swietenia macrophylla King., Tectona grandis L. from plantations; Albizia procera (Roxb.) Benth., A. falcataria L., Alstonia scholaris (L.) R. Br., Aphanamixis polystachya (Wall.) Parker., Hydnocarpus kurzii (King.) Warb., Heynea trijuga Roxb., Lagerstroemia speciosa (L.) Pers., Messua ferrea Linn., Podocarpus nerifolia Don., Swintonia floribunda Griff., Syzygium fruticosum (Roxb.) DC., S. grandis (Wt.) Wal. from forest and nursery seedlings of A. polystachya, A. chaplasha, Gmelina arborea Roxb. and S. cuminii (L.) Skeels from Hazarikhil forest, Chittagong of Bangladesh. Roots were stained in aniline blue and rhizosphere soils were assessed by wet sieving and decanting methods. The range of AM colonization varied significantly from 10%-73% in the plantations samples. Maximum colonization was observed in A. mangium (73%) and minimum colonization was observed in C. tabularis (10%). Vesicular colonization was recorded 15%-67% in five plantation tree species. The highest was in A. cadamba (67%) and the lowest was in T. grandis; A. chaplasha and C. tabularis showed no vesicular colonization. Arbuscular colonization was recorded 12%-60% in four plantation tree species. The highest was in A. mangium (60%) and the lowest was in A. cadamba. Roots of Artocarpus chaplasha, C. tabularis and T. grandis showed no arbuscular colonization. Among 12 forest tree species, nine tree species showed AM colonization. The highest was in A. falcataria (62%) and the lowest was in S. fruticosum (10%). Significant variation in vesicular colonization was recorded in seven forest tree species. The highest was in H. trijuga (52%) and the lowest was in L. speciosa (18%). Hydnocarpus kurzii, M. ferrea, P. nerifolia S. fruticosum and S. grandis showed no vesicular colonization. Arbuscular colonization was recorded in seven forest tree species. The highest was in A. falcataria (60%) and the lowest was in A. procera (10%). All the nursery seedlings showed AM colonization and the range was 10%-73%. Vesicules were recorded in G. arborea (40%) and S. cumini (40%). Arbuscular colonization was recorded in G. arborea (100%) and S. cumini (100%). Spore population was recorded 77-432/100 g dry soils, 80-276/100 g dry soils, and 75-153/100g dry soils in plantation, forest and nursery, respectively. Glomus and Acaulospora were dominant genera among the six AM fungi recorded. Significantly positive correlation was observed between AM colonization and AM fungal spore population in Hazarikhil plantation tree species, forest tree species and nursery tree seedlings. The present study showed the biodiversity of root colonization and AM fungi are active in nutrient cycling, survivals and seedling establishment of the plants in the Hazarikhil forest, plantation and nursery.  相似文献

Most tree species in tropical mountain rain forests are naturally associated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Previous studies in southern Ecuador of 115 tree species revealed that only three species were not associated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Seedlings of tropical tree species raised in the nursery may need to be associated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi to survive transplantation shock in higher numbers. Methods for establishing plantations with native tree species are not yet established for Ecuador. Thus, we investigated the feasibility of using mycorrhizal roots of seedlings of Inga acreana, Tabebuia chrysantha, Cedrela montana and Heliocarpus americanus that had trapped mycorrhizal fungi from forest humus in the nursery to inoculate C. montana and H. americanus with native arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Inoculation with either a mixture of mycorrhizal roots from the four species or only with mycorrhizal roots from the same tree species were compared with effects of moderate fertilization. Assessment of plant growth and mycorrhizal status of 6-months-old Cedrela montana and Heliocarpus americanus revealed an improvement in growth and diverse associated fungi through mycorrhizal root inoculation in comparison with moderate fertilization. Moderate fertilization did not suppress mycorrhization.  相似文献

Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus L.) has wide genetic variability and high productivity in plantations in North America, Europe and the Far East. In regions where neither white pine blister rust nor the white pine weevil are a problem, as in the central states of the U.S.A. and the warmer parts of Europe, primary attention is given to selection and breeding for vigor. Estimates for trees up to age 18 indicate that a first-generation genetic gain in volume of over 20% can be obtained from open-pollinated family selection within stands. Volume gains of 50% or more over local genotypes have been realized at ages 15–20 through the use of seed from selected southern Appalachian stands and in some individual tree crosses of eastern white pine with blue (Himalayan) pine. In the cool, humid regions of eastern North America and Europe, where blister rust resistance is important, breeding strategies include cloning of resistant P. strobus individuals, use of blue and Balkan pines in breeding programs, and exploitation of low-level rust resistance in low-risk localities. Eastern white pine losses from blister rust can be avoided in Japan and Korea by good plantation management without genetic selection. In some regions where the white pine weevil is the major problem, western white pine is useful both for hybridization and as an alternative, more weevil-resistant species. Analysis of relative photosynthesis of SO2- and O3-fumigated clones may be useful as a method of screening for pollution tolerance in regions where air pollution is likely to intensify. Efficient techniques for cloning by rooting of cuttings are now available. Efforts are under way to develop technology for micropropagation for mass production of superior clones. Breeding strategies for the major P. strobus plantation regions of the world are summarized.  相似文献
