As the aquaculture industry intensively develops, its environmental impact increases. Discharges from aquaculture deteriorate the receiving environment and the need for fishmeal and fish oil for fish feed production increases. Rotating biological contactors, trickling filters, bead filters and fluidized sand biofilters are conventionally used in intensive aquaculture systems to remove nitrogen from culture water. Besides these conventional water treatment systems, there are other possible modi operandi to recycle aquaculture water and simultaneously produce fish feed. These double-purpose techniques are the periphyton treatment technique, which is applicable to extensive systems, and the proteinaceous bio-flocs technology, which can be used in extensive as well as in intensive systems. In addition to maintenance of good water quality, both techniques provide an inexpensive feed source and a higher efficiency of nutrient conversion of feed. The bio-flocs technology has the advantage over the other techniques that it is relatively inexpensive; this makes it an economically viable approach for sustainable aquaculture. 相似文献

In marine aquaculture, fish populations constantly decrease throughout the cultivation period because of mortality and escape. Current production management systems provide limited opportunities to count the cultured fish, making it difficult to estimate accurately the fish population in the cage. To overcome this problem, an automatic fish identifying method based on particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) flow visualization technology is proposed in this paper. The proposed method utilizes an image processing unit that extracts individual fish from the acquired image and a motion analysis unit that calculates the motion vector for each individual. Thus, the accuracy of the extraction results in the image processing unit affects the system’s counting results. To validate the efficiency and robustness of the image extraction performed by the image processing unit, individuals were extracted from images using the open-source image deep learning semantic segmentation method (SegNet), which is able to distinguish between the background and foreground in the images via analysis at the pixel level. SegNet is able to improve the image discrimination performance by multiplying the learning paths, and the robustness of the detection results can be ensured by changing the layer structure according to the detection target. Accordingly, the use of SegNet was evaluated in terms of the number of layers and images in the training set. The results of this study indicate that the application of SegNet with PTV technology represents a promising method for the automatic identifying and behavioral tracking of fish in an aquaculture net cage. 相似文献

While marine aquaculture has grown rapidly, so have concerns regarding the environmental impacts caused by the industry. In particular, increasing discharges of solid and dissolved fish excretions, nutrients and therapeutic chemicals have coincided with greater public awareness of the possibility of environmental damage. This has stimulated a number of criticisms, drawn from a wide spectrum of interests, ranging from the use of natural fish stocks to produce fish meal for aqua feeds to the effects of enhanced nutrient input on the coastal marine environment. The present study reviews available information on the environmental effects of feeding practices in salmonid aquaculture in Europe. Accumulation of waste food and fish faecal material results in changes in the sediment under fish cages, characterized by a low redox potential, high content of organic material and accumulation of nitrogenous and phosphorous compounds. Although significant environmental impacts have been reported in the literature at distances of up to 100 m from the cages, in general such impacts are reported to be localized to within 20–50 m around the cages. For farmed salmon and trout, mass balance models have been developed for nitrogen and phosphorus, indicating that 50% of the nitrogen and 28% of the phosphorus supplied with the food is wasted in dissolved form. The maximum nutrient release can be estimated from the hydrographic conditions in the immediate vicinity of the farm, such as water volume, tidal water exchange and currents. At present production levels, improvements in the feeding efficiency and feed quality of aquafeeds could reduce waste and consequent environmental impacts. 相似文献

本研究先通过单因子实验分析了电流密度、极板面积比、极板间距和初始pH对总氨氮(TAN)和硝态氮(NO3–-N)去除率的影响。采用Design-Expert软件中Box-Behnken的中心组合原则设计四因素三水平响应面实验,考察不同影响因子对脱氮效率的影响,并建立响应面模型优化反应条件,最后对优化的反应条件进行验证。结果显示,电流密度、极板面积比、极板间距和初始pH的变化对TAN去除影响不大,在所选反应条件下,TAN去除率均高于80%,但反应条件的改变显著影响硝酸盐(NO3?)的去除,NO3?去除率在29.8%~80.9%范围内变化。响应面模型的回归系数R2为0.9340,校正系数R2为0.8681,说明该模型具有较好的准确性。NO3?去除最优反应条件:电流密度为25.6 mA/cm2,阴阳极板面积比为1.6∶1,极板间距为2.5 cm,初始pH为6.6,对该反应条件下的脱氮效果展开实验验证发现,TAN去除率为87.3%,NO3?去除率为81.5%。研究表明,电化学处理可实现对TAN和NO3–-N的同步去除,同时,响应面模型的运用有助于优化电化学法在养殖水处理中的脱氮效率。 相似文献

ABSTRACTThe impacts of improved agricultural technologies on smallholder households in Africa are well documented in the literature. However, the literature on the welfare impacts of aquaculture technologies, especially in the context of smallholder households, is very scanty. This paper applies the propensity score matching technique to household survey data to examine the impact of improved feed technology on fish income and poverty in Kenya. After controlling for observable household characteristics, the results indicate that improved feed technology increases aquaculture income and reduces poverty among fish farming households. Specifically, the income effect of the technology is 23–37%, with resultant poverty reduction effect of 19–23% points. Evidence from the study indicates that the likelihood of adopting improved feed in Kenya will surge with improved extension service delivery, access to government subsidized feed, and easy market access for purchasing improved feed and sale of mature fish. 相似文献

Sustainable and long-term growth of the aquaculture industry should involve both ecologically sound practices and appropriate resource management. The increasing economic dimension of Mediterranean aquaculture is opening new economic niches and may be a valid support to reduce the pressure of traditional fisheries. Aquaculture practices can also lead to modifications of coastal habitats through the impact of wastes of land-based and open-sea mariculture facilities. In addition to these aspects which place a direct pressure on aquatic ecosystems and wild fishery resources, a wide range of environmental contaminants, such as chemicals used in farming operations, can accumulate in farmed organisms and put fish health and quality at risk. Thus, as aquaculture makes its transition to a major food-producing sector, proper assessment and control of environmental impacts and food safety awareness are becoming increasingly important. The development of simple tools able to monitor the extent of environmental and biological impacts associated with farming operations at various levels of biological complexity from the ecosystem to the organism level is required. Although a number of techniques for assessing the environmental and biological impact of pollutants in natural ecosystems are available, the development of practical and validated tools is sorely needed in aquaculture. 相似文献

Brazil’s aquaculture production has increased rapidly during the last two decades, growing from basically zero in the 1980s to over one half million (metric) tons in 2011. However, with an increased focus on the domestic market and native species, the development in Brazil has been very different from most other successful aquaculture producers, particularly in Latin America. As in many other countries, the development started with introduced international species such as shrimp and tilapia in a typical developing country fashion, but has shifted to an increasing share of native species and focus on the domestic market. This article analyzes the main aspects concerning this development by the relative productivity of the main species, regulations and markets. Regulations and the technology spreading from international species may be considered as important factors for this somewhat unusual development. The future prospects for the Brazilian aquaculture industry development are positive, since there is not only space available for expansion for both exotic and native species, but also an untapped domestic market. 相似文献

The agricultural world today is dominated by a few domesticated mammal species, that is, animals modified from their wild ancestors through selective breeding in captivity for traits beneficial to human usages. As a result, a clear dichotomy exists between wild (from hunting) and domesticated mammals (produced in farms) used for human consumption. Similar to agriculture, aquaculture is often viewed as the only solution that can provide more fish products given that harvesting wild stocks have reached an upper limit. Aquaculture is considerably younger than agriculture relying on natural sources to farm numerous species. To better describe the diverse strategies for fish production, we propose a new classification comprising five levels of ‘domestication’ with 1 being the least to 5 being the most domesticated. Our classification places 70% of the 250 farmed finfish species recorded in the 2009 FAO database into levels 1, 2 and 3 representing a transitory form of fish production dependent on the availability of the wild resource. In contrast, only a few species, or more accurately populations, can be considered truly domesticated, similar to cattle or sheep. Based on this classification, two scenarios for the future of aquaculture are discussed: either the industry focuses on few truly domesticated species, similar to the path taken by agriculture, but avoiding its negative impacts or aquaculture proceeds with inter‐specific diversification by focusing primarily on the domestication of native species. 相似文献

通过双层平板法以不同细菌为宿主测定了八个厂家蛭弧菌类生物制剂的噬斑含量及噬斑分离物的宿主裂解范围;以三对靶向不同类群蛭弧菌类生物的特异引物对各产品及其噬斑分离物进行了PCR检测;对两株代表性蛭弧菌分离物的16S rRNA基因进行了测序,并通过构建蛭弧菌科进化树分析了它们的系统地位。结果表明被检测的绝大多数蛭弧菌类生物制剂质量不合格,仅两个样品被蛭弧菌科特异引物检测为阳性,被双层平板法证实有噬斑出现。其中一个样品JSF中存在两种形态和宿主范围不同的噬斑分离物,且不同宿主菌计数结果存在明显差异。16S rRNA基因序列分析表明这两种噬斑分离物JSF1和JSF2,分别属于蛭弧菌科的噬菌蛭弧菌(类群1)和未定种的类群5。但另一样品的噬斑分离物则被证实为非蛭弧菌类生物。 相似文献

This study characterized Northeast U.S. businesses breeding and/or selling marine ornamental aquacultured (MOA) livestock, identified cultured species, and assessed sales figures. Identified businesses (n?=?529) in the region consisted partially of retailers (n?=?274), commercial aquaculturists (n?=?42), and public aquaria, research, and educational institutions (n?=?48); the target sectors for inquiry. Of 75 survey respondents, 54% retailed MOA livestock, 19% conducted their own commercial MOA, and 9% conducted MOA as a part of public aquaria, research and/or educational endeavors. Corals generated up to $60,000 in annual sales for retailers and $100,000 for commercial aquaculturists. Commercial aquaculturists generated up to $50,000 in annual sales for MOA fishes and up to $30,000 for MOA non-coral invertebrates. The industry is characterized by market demand, low supply, few commercial aquaculturists, and many public aquaria, research and educational institutions; these attributes offer opportunities for its regional growth and development. 相似文献

A case study is presented to compare the results of design and management including circulation and dissolved oxygen management at a modified split-pond facility in west-central Alabama to the recommended design. Modifications included: the use of and a propeller pump instead of a slow-moving paddlewheel, lack of baffle in the waste cells, waste cell to fish cell ratio size, and improperly positioned aerators and DO sensing probes.Over a three year time period, the modified split-pond facility had net yields of hybrid catfish (Ictalurus punctatus ♀ x I. furcatus ♂) that reached up to 11,416 kg/ha/year; however, this includes several reports of fish kills. The present study experienced a minimum 15% reduction in net production compared to the recommended design values with a maximum potential loss of 54%. Ponds used an axial pump to transfer water between a 6:1 ratio of waste treatment area to fish grow-out area. Water flowed from the fish cell to the waste cell at a rate of 31.2 m3/min and from the waste cell back to the fish cell at a rate of 0.78 m3/min. Aerators used 5619–7492 kW-hr/ha which is more than the electrical use in traditional ponds (2238 kW-hr/ha). Even with the extra aeration, this study had at least one fish cell and one waste cell drop below a dissolved oxygen concentration of 2.5 mg/L. These specific modifications may lead to poor survival and production in split-pond aquaculture and are discussed with best management practices of the recommended design. 相似文献

Sole is a high-value flatfish species that is highly favored in many European markets. Nowadays most sole comes from capture fisheries; however, wild supply has been decreasing because of decreasing catches due to stocks overexploitation. Due to its high price and declining landings, as well as a desire by farmers to diversify their operations, there has been an expansion in sole aquaculture production in recent years and there are ambitious plans for further growth. In this paper we assess the potential for sole aquaculture in Europe using raceways. Abstract The recent advances in information technology (IT) have had profound impacts on all walks of life and aquaculture is no exception. The growing importance of aquaculture as an alternative source of protein has further emphasized the need to adapt and develop advanced IT for the better management of aquaculture facilities as well as the regional planning for aquaculture development. It is the objective of this paper to review the use and potential prospects of IT in aquaculture management. The information technologies considered are instrumentation and process control, data management, computerized models, decision support systems, artificial intelligence and expert systems, image processing and pattern recognition, geographical information systems, and information centres and networks. AbstractCertification schemes are becoming increasingly important within aquaculture management, but the indicators that are used by these schemes are subject to considerable debate. Many have questioned their actual impact on improving the industry, and whether they effectively address the many externalities of aquaculture production. In this paper, we study the choice of indicators in eight major certification scheme standards for salmon aquaculture and examine to what degree they manage to address impacts beyond individual production sites. We find that, in accordance with the criticism, the majority of indicators pertain only to the site-level. However, indicators related to traceability, and to coordination and sharing of information among producers can elevate local concerns to a higher level of impact. We, therefore, argue that among all the certification scheme standards considered here, these types of indicators should be emphasized to a larger extent. 相似文献

A 15‐day lab‐scale experiment was performed to determine the possible use of bioflocs as a feed for Macrobrachium rosenbergii postlarvae. The bioflocs were grown on acetate, glycerol and glucose. A glycerol‐fed reactor was initially inoculated with a Bacillus spores mixture. The highest protein content was obtained in the (glycerol+Bacillus) bioflocs, i.e. 58±9% dry weight (DW). The glycerol and acetate bioflocs showed a lower, but similar content (42–43% DW) and glucose bioflocs contained 28±3% DW. Higher total n‐6 fatty acid contents were observed in the glycerol and (glycerol+Bacillus) bioflocs. The vitamin C content was variable, up to 54 μg ascorbic acid g?1 DW in the glycerol bioflocs. Bioflocs were fed to M. rosenbergii postlarvae as the sole feed. High survival levels were obtained in the (glycerol+Bacillus) and glucose groups, i.e. 75±7% and 70±0% respectively. This was significantly higher than the starvation control (0% survival after 15 days). This indicated that the prawns were able to feed on the bioflocs. These results are in accordance with the biofloc's nutritional parameters and suggest that the choice of the carbon source used for growing bioflocs is of prime importance. 相似文献

The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of northern pike origin (wild vs. farmed) and sex (female vs. male) on chemical composition, including fatty acids, and technological properties of fresh fillets. Fish origin influenced moisture, protein, fat, and ash contents, pH and color of the fillets, and the proportion of 22 out of 25 determined fatty acids, whereas sex affected expressible water, pH, lightness and redness of fillets, and only a single fatty acid (C20:0) proportion. Farmed pike had higher protein and fat content and lower moisture and ash than wild pike. Higher proportion and content of total polyunsaturated and n-3 fatty acids, as well as lower n-6/n-3 ratio, were found in farmed pike. Thus, it can be concluded that the commercial feed positively affected fatty acid proportion and content in the fish tissue and increased its nutritional value. 相似文献

Sea urchin fisheries are valuable commercial resources in the United States with processed gonads sold in Japanese and American markets and maximum US sales of $150M US dollars in 1996. Wild populations of sea urchins on all coasts of the US have been dramatically over-fished. Aquaculture of sea urchins in land-based facilities can help restore commercial populations and preserve this ecologically important herbivore. In this study, we used invariant summer photoperiod to prevent gametogenesis in the North American green sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) maintained in a land-based aquaculture system and provided a commercially available formulated feed that promotes maximum growth of intra-gonadal somatic nutrient storage cells called nutritive phagocytes. Results were compared with individuals fed the same formulated feed under ambient photoperiod in cages in the ocean. Monthly samples of gonads from both treatments were evaluated for gonad index, volume fractions of cellular constituents of the germinal epithelium, oocyte diameters and taste. Over the 5 months of this study, gonad indices increased significantly (p < 0.001) in both treatments from 4.8% ± 0.9 (all values ± SE) initially to 20.5% ± 2.1 under invariant and 23.2% ± 1.4 under ambient photoperiod with no significant difference between treatments (p = 0.55). Volume fractions of nutritive phagocytes increased to 80.3% ± 5.9 (initial 37.9% ± 7.1) in males and 71.0% ± 6.7 (initial 10.3% ± 4.0) in females (p < 0.001) only under invariant photoperiod. Nutritive phagocyte lengths increased under both photoperiod treatments, but the volume fraction containing nutrients was higher under invariant photoperiod. Volume fractions of gonial/gametogenic cells increased significantly (p < 0.001) only under ambient photoperiod from 20.4% ± 5.5 to 37.8% ± 1.8 in males and 0% to 22.6% ± 3.6 in females. The volume fraction of residual oocytes from last year's oogenesis increased under invariant photoperiod while that of both residual and new oocytes increased under ambient photoperiod. Residual oocyte diameters increased from 56.2 μm ± 2.2 initially to 93.5 μm ± 3.7 under invariant and those of residual and new oocytes to 126.0 μm ± 7.3 under ambient photoperiod. Invariant photoperiod yields gonads in both sexes of S. droebachiensis that do not initiate fall gametogenesis but attain large size as their nutritive phagocytes grow substantially in size. A Canadian study of wild-collected S. droebachiensis indicated that gonads taste best when they contain pre-dominantly nutritive phagocytes and not copious gametes, however gonad taste in our study was unsatisfactory suggesting that the only commercially available sea urchin diet requires modification to support commercial development of land-based aquaculture. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThis study examined if, and how, comanagement is effective in controlling aquaculture industry in the municipalities of Anda and Bolinao in the province of Pangasinan, in the Philippines, the locations of two major production areas of milkfish (Chanos chanos) in the country. Institutional and community analyses conducted in these study sites revealed a unique hierarchy of resource users, as well as unique social and economic problems in aquaculture, distinct from those of capture fishery. It was also indicated that comanagement is seen as a solution for essential practices to be enforced practically and sustainably for the management of this industry. To improve aquaculture governance, it is desired that the comanagement scheme shall include not only the governments and fishers but also business operators who often have large capital and a high degree of power. 相似文献
