Growth of regenerating trees in different light environments was studied for the mountainous, mixed-species forests in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania. The primary species in these mixtures were silver fir (Abies alba Mill.), European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst). Seedlings/saplings of these species were selected and measured in different stands from two different geographical locations. Regenerating trees were measured for height and diameter growth during the summer of 2002. For each seedling/sapling, percentage of above canopy light (PACL) and stand basal area (BA) were used to assess available and occupied growing space respectively. Regeneration growth was compared against these two variables and regression relationships were developed. Using these models, we predicted the dynamics of regeneration as both growth and species composition. Our results showed that in low-light environments (PACL<20–35%; BA>30 m2/ha), shade tolerant fir and beech clearly outcompeted the spruce. Therefore, in dense stands, spruce could be eliminated by the shade tolerant species. For intermediate levels of cover (PACL=35–70%; BA=15–35 m2/ha) the spruce grew at comparable rates as the beech and fir. All three species showed similar growth rates in open conditions (PACL>80–90%; BA<15–20 m2/ha) with the spruce having a tendency to outgrow the others. However, in terms of establishment, such conditions favor spruce and inhibit fir and beech.  相似文献

We studied the relationships among 5-year radial (diameter and basal area) growth of red oak (genus Quercus, subgenus Erythrobalanus) crop trees and predictor variables representing individual tree vigor, distance-dependant competition measures, and distance-independent competition measures. The red oaks we examined are representative of the commercially and ecologically important oak species of the bottomland hardwood forests of the southeastern US. The crown class score, a quantitative measure of crown class and tree vigor, performed best in accounting for the variability in tree diameter growth. Plot-level variables failed to account for a significant proportion of the variability in tree radial growth. The basal area of the first-order neighbors that were taller than the crop trees and located within 2.4 times the mean overstory crown radius had the highest negative correlation with crop tree 5-year radial growth. Red oaks were a major part of these competitors and likely exerted the greatest competitive pressure. However, crop tree radial growth was positively associated with the basal area of the red oaks which were indirect (second order) neighbors and which were taller than the crop trees. It is possible that indirect neighbors do not compete with the crop trees, but they likely compete with the direct competitors of the crop trees, thus having an indirect positive influence on crop tree growth. Such reasoning is consistent with previously observed spatial dependence up to four times the mean overstory crown radius. The findings may have implications for thinning hardwoods stands and crop tree management in that foresters need to take into account (1) oak intra-genus competition, (2) the negative competitive effect of direct neighbors, and (3) the potentially positive effect of the indirect neighbors, the competitors’ competitors.  相似文献

Abstract

Effects of stump harvesting on the properties of surface soil and on the density, structure and growth of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) stands were estimated in a field trial in western Finland. The experiment was established in 1977 and measured in 2010. Stems and logging residues were harvested after clear-cutting, and stumps were lifted and removed from half of the experimental area. Sixteen plots were planted with pine seedlings and 16 with spruce. The main effects of stump harvesting were improved survival of planted trees and an increase in natural regeneration. No clearly negative effects were noted in the stand development. Stump harvesting had no or minimal effects on the properties of the organic layer and those of the 0- to 10-cm mineral-soil layer. Soil properties did not differ between tree species. Pine production was higher on plots with stump removal compared to plots without soil treatment.  相似文献

Volume increment per occupied area was also found to be greater in mixed stands as opposed to pure stands, suggesting a species interaction with reduced levels of competition in the former. However, the total volume growth was generally lower in mixed stands since the growth rate of oak is much lower.

    We measured vertical and horizontal variation in canopy transmittance of photosynthetically active radiation in five Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco-Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg. (Douglas-fir-western hemlock) stands in the central Cascades of southern Washington to determine how stand structure and age affect the forest light environment. The shape of the mean transmittance profile was related to stand height, but height of mean maximum transmittance was progressively lower than maximum tree height in older stands. The vertical rate of attenuation declined with stand age in both the overstory and understory. A classification of vertical light zones based on the mean and variance of transmittance showed a progressive widening of the bright (low variance and high mean) and transition (high variance and rapid vertical change) zones in older stands, whereas the dim zone (low variance and mean) narrowed. The zone of maximum canopy surface area in height profiles, estimated by inversion of transmittance profiles, changed from relatively high in the canopy in most young stands ("top-heavy") to lower in the canopy in older stands ("bottom-heavy"). In the understory, all stands had similar mean transmittances, but the spatial scale of variation increased with stand age and increasing crown size. The angular distribution of openness was similar in all stands, though the older stands were less open at all angles than the younger stands. Understory openness was generally unrelated to transmittance in the canopy above. Whole-canopy leaf area indices, estimated using three methods of inverting light measurements, showed little correspondence across methods. The observed patterns in light environment are consistent with structural changes occurring during stand development, particularly the diversification of crowns, the creation of openings of various sizes and the elaboration of the outer canopy surface. The ensemble of measurements has potential use in distinguishing forests of differing ages that have similar stature.  相似文献

    Alternative strategies for stand density management in even-aged coniferous forests may increase plant species and functional diversity. We examined the effects of fixed and variable density thinning on tree seedling regeneration as well as on abundance (indexed by cover) and richness of understory vascular plants 11 years after harvesting 45- to 66-year old forests dominated by Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) or western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.) at three sites in western Oregon. Each site contained an unthinned control (CON), and thinning treatments selected to enhance overstory structural diversity and spatial variability within stands (HD, high density treatment at 300 trees ha−1; MD, moderate density treatment at 200 trees ha−1; VD300, VD200 and VD100, variable density treatments at 300, 200 and 100 trees ha−1). Leave islands are included in HD and the other thinning treatments contain both leave islands and gap openings. Tree seedling regeneration was highly variable and generally increased with thinning. Cover of all understory species was greater in VD100 than in the control whereas richness was greater in HD and MD. Cover and richness of early seral species were greater in most thinning treatments than in the control. Understory plant communities were overwhelmingly dominated by native species. In general, vegetation dynamics was accelerated by thinning, especially in variable density treatments. Cover of N-fixing understory species was greater in VD200 than in the other treatments, and in MD and VD300 than in the control, whereas richness of understory N-fixing species increased in all thinning treatments. Cover of understory species with intermediate soil water requirements was greater in MD, VD200 and VD100 than in the control, whereas richness of these species increased in VD200 compared to the control, HD and VD300. Thinning promoted higher diversity of understory conditions without reducing density and species richness of crop tree regeneration, and seemed to increase functional effect and response diversity.  相似文献

These models allow the manager to predict the development of any type of stand (even- and uneven-aged, and pure and mixed stands).

This study developed and compared two sets of models which enable tree-level simulation of the development of pure and mixed stands of Pinus brutia in north-east Greece. The first set of models for even-aged forestry consists of site index models, diameter growth models, tree height models, and mortality models. The second set, which is for uneven-aged forestry, uses a past growth index instead of a site index.

    Context

    Six Pinus pinea stands growing under the Mediterranean type climate in Italy along the Tyrrhenian and Sardinian coasts.

    Aims

    To identify the main climatic factors driving variability in growth responses to contrasting climate conditions at local and regional scales using tree-ring analysis.

    Methods

    Common growth patterns in tree rings were explored with clustering techniques. Local and regional growth responses to climate were examined using a dendroclimatic analysis. To remove the age-dependent trend we decomposed the tree ring width data into age-bands, thereafter standardised and recombined into a single mean site chronology.

    Results

    The main grouping of tree ring series reflected climate-driven growth patterns, with a clear separation between stands from wetter and drier sites. The most interesting results were found at a seasonal scale and showed i) a shift of the main precipitation inputs from previous autumn-winter to current early-spring period, and ii) a bimodal pattern of sensitivity to water availability, when increasing drought conditions.

    Conclusion

    Our findings suggest that water deficit limits P. pinea growth also during late summer months in drier sites. In view of the projected increases in the frequency and duration of summer droughts in the Mediterranean basin, detecting differences in growth responses to site-specific climate patterns may allow selection of more appropriate mitigation and conservation strategies across most of its present range.  相似文献

    Early management of the regenerated seedlings shapes the future stand properties. To address these issues, pre-commercial thinning (PCT) and control treatments were applied to planted Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst) and naturally regenerated birch (Betula pendula Roth., Betula pubescens Ehrh.) stands in forest experiments in southern Sweden (lat. 56–57?N) containing 1.1–5.5?m tall saplings. The treatments were retention of 1000 or 2000?stems?ha?1 of Norway spruce, with no birch or birch at 1000?stems?ha?1. Treatments were replicated with and without annual removal of birch sprouts from stumps. The periodic annual increment (PAI) over five years was calculated for total stand volume and individual trees. The mean PAI of dominant trees was significantly higher both following all PCT treatments than controls, and following low rather than high-density PCT. Birch retention did not affect growth of the dominant trees but PAI was lower in plots with uncontrolled sprouting. The PAI of birch was significantly higher in low-density Norway spruce plots than in control plots and the high-density plots. The treatment response was significant even in stands with initial heights of only 1–2?m.  相似文献

    Coastal Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii spp. menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) occurs over a wide range of environmental conditions on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Although ecological zones have been drawn, no formal spatial analysis of environmental limitations on tree growth has been carried out. Such an exercise is desirable to identify areas that may warrant intensive management and to evaluate the impacts of predicted climate change this century. We applied a physiologically based forest growth model, 3-PG (Physiological Principles Predicting Growth), to interpret and map current limitations to Douglas-fir growth across Vancouver Island at 100-m cell resolution. We first calibrated the model to reproduce the regional productivity estimates reported in yield table growth curves. Further analyses indicated that slope exposure is important; southwest slopes of 30 degrees receive 40% more incident radiation than similarly inclined northeast slopes. When combined with other environmental differences associated with aspect, the model predicted 60% more growth on southwest exposures than on northeast exposures. The model simulations support field observations that drought is rare in the wetter zones, but common on the eastern side of Vancouver Island at lower elevations and on more exposed slopes. We illustrate the current limitations on growth caused by suboptimal temperature, high vapor pressure deficits and other factors. The modeling approach complements ecological classifications and offers the potential to identify the most favorable sites for management of other native tree species under current and future climatic conditions.  相似文献

    Post-thinning stump sprout response was assessed in a coast redwood [Sequoia sempervirens (D. Don) Endl.] stand from 5 to 9 years after five treatments were initiated. Nine years after treatment, leaf area index (LAI) ranged from 5.9 to 14.1 and the percent above canopy light (PACL) ranged from 0.8 to 3.9. Sprout responses included rapid self-thinning in all treatments with complete sprout mortality at low light regimes. Self-thinning of clumps increased with greater overstory LAI and poorer light regimes. Leaf area of individual sprout clumps also declined in low light regimes. The probability of sprout survival declined rapidly below 10 PACL and coincided with declining leaf area in sprout clumps. A conceptual model is presented that shows the sensitivity of redwood sprouts to light regime. Results have implications for management of multiaged stands and indicate these redwood coppice systems require relatively severe overstory treatments to provide sufficient light for sprout vigor and growth.  相似文献

    Birch (Betula pendula Roth) growth within the Western Siberia forest-steppe was analyzed based on long-term (1897–2006) inventory data (height, diameter at breast height [dbh], and stand volume). Analysis of biometry parameters showed increased growth at the beginning of twenty-first century compared to similar stands (stands age = 40–60 years) at the end of nineteenth century. Mean height, dbh, and stem volume increased from 14 to 20 m, from 16 to 22 cm, and from ~63 to ~220 m3/ha, respectively. Significant correlations were found between the stands mean height, dbh, and volume on the one hand, and vegetation period length (rs = 0.71 to 0.74), atmospheric CO2 concentration (rs = 0.71 to 0.76), and drought index (Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index, rs = ?0.33 to ?0.51) on the other hand. The results obtained have revealed apparent climate-induced impacts (e.g. increase of vegetation period length and birch habitat drying due to drought increase) on the stands growth. Along with this, a high correlation of birch biometric parameters and [CO2] in ambient air indicated an effect of CO2 fertilization. Meanwhile, further drought increase may switch birch stand growth into decline and greater mortality as has already been observed within the Trans-Baikal forest-steppe ecotone.  相似文献

    In Mediterranean environments, availability of water and nutrients are the main factors limiting the success of afforestation. As part of a wider project, an experiment was established in Northeast Portugal, aiming at testing the effect of several site preparation techniques on plant survival and growth (height and diameter) in a newly installed mixed forest stand. Results presented regard plant response during 42 months after plantation. The experimental protocol consisted in seven treatments described by mechanical operations that rank soil disturbance intensity from none to high, set in plots of 375 m2, randomly distributed in three blocks, in different topographic positions (gentle slope plateau, moderate slope shoulder, and steep mid-slope). Pseudotsuga menziesii (PM) and Castanea sativa (CS) forest species were planted in a 4 m × 2 m scheme and in alternate rows with 12 plants on each row per plot, summing up 72 plant per specie and treatment at start of the experiment. The results show that: (i) the highest mortality was observed immediately after the plantation and before the dry season, on the lowest intensity treatments; (ii) after the dry season, the highest mortality was also observed in treatments with the lowest intensity of soil disturbance, while the lowest values were found on the intermediate intensity treatments; (iii) during the experimental period, the effect of treatments on plant growth (height and diameter) was statistically significant; however, experimental results do not lead yet to a clear quantitative relationship between soil disturbance intensity due to site preparation and plant response under the conditions tested.  相似文献

    Different methodological approaches from the field of spatial statistics, the index of cluster size (ICS) and quadrat methods such as the two-term and three-term local quadrat variance (TTLQV and 3TLQV) and the new local variance (NLV) were tested to find a simple spatial measure to classify mixed coniferous uneven-aged, even-aged and conversion stands in the central Black Forest area of Germany. Altogether six stands were analysed with regularly distributed sample plots of 0.25 ha (50×50 m), each subdivided into 25 quadrats of 10×10 m. In each of the quadrats, diameter at breast height (dbh) for trees of the overstory (dbh>7 cm) was assessed and classified into three diameter classes. Height measurements were used to develop specific stand height curves for each stand and to calculate the standing volume per tree and per quadrat. The even-aged stands showed a regular distribution of the standing volume, while the conversion and uneven-aged stands were more clustered. This was detected using ICS, which proved to be a simple but very efficient measure for stand structure. The ICS also showed a highly random distribution of small and medium trees and a regular distribution of large trees of the overstory in the uneven-aged stand. Large and medium trees of one even-aged stand were also regularly distributed while conversion stands showed a regular, random or slightly clustered distribution of these trees. The more uneven the ages in the stands were, the larger were the phases detected by the NLV. The findings of the ICS were generally supported by the TTLQV and 3TLQV. The more uneven the ages in a stand were, the less clustered were the trees of different sizes of the understory. Clustering also decreased with increasing height of understory trees. The patterns detected in the investigated stands were related to the effect of different management regimes. Implications for the management of conversions stands based on the findings of the study are given.  相似文献

    通过对普洱江城苦丁茶场及西双版纳普文试验林场西南桦与高阿丁枫不同混交模式的生长量指标进行调查分析,结果表明,(1)10年生前,西南桦的胸径较高阿丁枫速生,林木的平均胸径西南桦大于高阿丁枫;11年生后,林木的平均胸径高阿丁枫大于西南桦;(2)10年生时,普文林场混交林的西南桦和高阿丁枫胸径生长一致(11.7 cm),西南桦树高超出高阿丁枫树高3.0 m。说明混交林中西南桦为早期速生树种;幼林阶段,西南桦和高阿丁枫胸径于不同的时期呈现错峰生长。同时,西南桦和高阿丁枫的地理分布、立地的生态适宜条件和林学特征等分析结果表明这2个树种在适宜的混交模式下属混交匹配的树种。建议采用非均匀密度控制混交,以实现2个树种的良好生长和长期混交。  相似文献
