Extrahepatic biliary tract rupture only rarely occur secondary to blunt or sharp trauma to the abdomen. Clinical symptoms result from chemical peritonitis and are unspecific. Recognition most often is delayed from several days to weeks, when patients suffer from ascites, icterus, dehydration and apathy. Surgical therapy depends of the site of laceration. In the present case, a dog with bile peritonitis was presented two weeks after being hit by a car. Explorative celiotomy revealed a rupture of the common bile duct. A cholecystojejunostomy was performed.  相似文献

A 14-year-old spayed female Shih-Tzu was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Konkuk University for evaluation of an abdominal mass. In diagnostic imaging, two large cystic masses were identified. The affected liver lobes were surgically resected, and the specimens were submitted for histopathological evaluation and immunohistochemical staining. The two cystic lesions were diagnosed as biliary cystadenocarcinoma (BCAC). Recurrence and regional invasion were identified on ultrasonography 36 days postoperatively. The patient died on postoperative day 271. To the best of our knowledge, previously reported case studies of BCAC in dogs presented limited clinical information. In this report, we present a detailed picture comprising a range of clinical information and histopathological examination of BCAC in a dog.  相似文献

A 130-week-old male Royal College of Surgeons rat kept as a non-treated animal in a long-term animal study presented with a mass in the hepatic portal region that adhered to a dilated common bile duct and the duodenum. Histopathologically, the solitary mass showed expansive growth with no apparent compression and continued to dilate the common bile duct, which had a hyperplastic epithelium with intestinal metaplasia. The mass mainly consisted of small to large dilated and/or tortuous ducts with abundant dense connective tissue and many inflammatory cells. The single-layer lining epithelium of the duct changed from cuboidal to columnar. Immunohistochemically, the lining cells were positive for cytokeratin 7, cytokeratin 19, and OV-6, which are bile duct markers. Based on the pathological characteristics, the rat was diagnosed as spontaneous cholangiofibrosis adjacent to a dilated common bile duct with intestinal metaplasia.  相似文献

Cholelithiasis is the presence of concretions in the gall bladder or bile duct. The veterinary literature is reviewed and a case reported. The subject was a seven-year-old male Schnauzer with presenting signs of depression, dehydration, pyrexia, icterus, vomiting and diarrhoea. Laboratory evaluation revealed a marked neutrophilia and elevation of SGPT and BUN. A radiopaque cholelith was seen on an abdominal X-ray. Euthanasia was requested because of the patient's poor condition. On post mortem examination, local peritonitis and abscess formation around the common bile duct were occluding the outflow of bile and causing adhesions to small and large intestine. The cholelith was analysed and was found to consist mainly of calcium bilirubinate.  相似文献

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis is a lifestyle-related disease and an increasing threat worldwide. Hepatic fibrosis, which results from chronic hepatic diseases including nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, is closely correlated with mortality among hepatic lesions, such as steatosis and inflammation. Thus, it is important to identify factors that can serve as diagnostic and therapeutic targets for hepatic fibrosis. In this study, we examined the function of CD44 in the development of hepatic fibrosis in choline-deficient, methionine-lowered, L-amino-acid diet-fed rats, especially with respect to the proliferation of bile duct epithelium. Male Fischer 344 rats were fed a choline-deficient, methionine-lowered, L-amino-acid diet for 2, 4, 13, or 26 weeks. This diet decreased the body weight; increased the levels of serum parameters indicating liver injury, such as aspartate and alanine aminotransferase; upregulated inflammation- and fibrosis-related gene expression in the liver; and resulted in the development of hepatic lesions, including fatty changes in hepatocytes, inflammatory cell infiltration, and fibrosis. Hepatic hyaluronan was synthesized and deposited in the liver tissue. The expression of both CD44 mRNA and protein was significantly increased throughout the experimental period. CD44 protein was observed in some of the bile duct epithelium, around which hyaluronic acid was deposited, and these bile duct lesions were concordant with the area of hepatic fibrosis. Thus, CD44 expressed in the bile duct epithelium may be a target for controlling nonalcoholic steatohepatitis-related hepatic fibrosis.  相似文献

Surgical ligation of a left-to-right shunting patent ductus arteriosus was attempted in two animals. In both cases, a young cat and dog, ligation was complicated by poor visualization of the ductus resulting in unsuccessful ligation. Post-operatively, both the cat and dog underwent computed tomography angiography to characterize the location and morphology of the patent ductus arteriosus. In both cases, computed tomography angiography revealed a left-to-right shunting patent ductus arteriosus with an insertion location medial to the left pulmonary artery branch compared to the typical location. We hypothesize that this atypical location resulted in a difficult surgical visualization from the left thoracotomy approach. Transvenous coil embolization of the duct from the external jugular vein was performed in both cases and resulted in successful occlusion. Variations in the medial-lateral insertion of the ductus arteriosus may have consequences for surgical intervention. If an atypical location of a patent ductus arteriosus is suspected on transthoracic echocardiography, computed tomography angiography prior to ligation may be useful to further define ductal location and help guide the surgical approach.  相似文献

This report describes the pathological characterizations of a rare case of necrosis of the femoral head that was spontaneous, bilateral, avascular and nontraumatic. A 14-month-old beagle dog was presented with pain in the hind limbs. At necropsy, the articular surface in the bilateral femoral head was markedly irregular. There were no gross abnormalities other than in the hip joints. Microscopically, a wide range of trabecular bone necrosis localized in the subchondral area was observed in both femoral heads. In the right femoral head, fibrosis and proliferative vessels were noted in the subchondral area. The articular cartilage was thickened irregularly, but there was no evidence of cartilage necrosis. The bone marrow adjacent to the affected area showed severe depression. In the metaphysis, atrophic bone marrow, but not bone necrosis, was observed. This was a rare case of spontaneous necrosis of the femoral head in an experimental beagle dog.  相似文献

The Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine (FDA/CVM) has cited an increasing number of reports of failure of heartworm prophylaxis in dogs. Failures may be due to resistance of L(3)-L(4) stage Dirofilaria immitis to the macrocyclic lactone class of compounds used for prophylaxis, lack of compliance with and understanding of administration of prophylactics, individual differences in drug absorption or metabolism, or a combination of these factors. Using the latest scientific information, the American Heartworm Society (AHS) and Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) have developed guidelines for the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of heartworm infection in dogs. This study summarizes the knowledge, beliefs, and behaviors relating to prevention of heartworm among members of a national hunting dog club, visitors to the club website, and attendees at club-sponsored events. These factors can have a direct effect on the success of heartworm prophylaxis. Results suggest that the dog owners lack confidence in the accuracy of the heartworm test to identify infection, the efficacy of products sold for prevention of heartworm, and the effectiveness of treatment to eliminate adult heartworms from infected dogs. Knowledge about when to begin heartworm preventive medication in a new puppy and the timing of heartworm tests was also lacking among a substantial number of respondents. In order to increase acceptance of prophylaxis and reduce the likelihood of a false conclusion of prophylactic failure, education of dog owners should focus on the need for an appropriately timed annual heartworm test and the importance of administering the last dose of monthly heartworm preventative after the last possible day of potential transmission.  相似文献

To generate quantitative ideas about the digestive capacity of the large intestine of pigs in case of reduced precaecal digestion, the results of several studies using the model “pancreatic duct ligated minipig”, are summarised. Ligation of the pancreatic duct causes an exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) leading to a severe reduction of precaecal digestibility (prc. dig.) rates [Tabeling, R., Gregory, P. Kamphues, J., 1999. Studies on nutrient digestibilities (pre-caecal and total) in pancreatic duct ligated pigs and the effects of enzyme substitution. J. Anim. Physiol. Anim. Nutr. 82, 251–263.]. All minipigs (control pigs; C and pancreatic duct ligated pigs; PL) were surgically fitted with an ileocaecal re-entrant fistula to determine rates and amounts of precaecal and total tract (total) digestion of crude fat (cfa), crude protein (cp) and starch (st).

The animals were fed diets rich in starch (StD:  60% st in dry matter [DM]) or rich in fat (FaD:  30% cfa in DM). In PL reduced prc. dig. rates, especially of cfa and cp (prc. cfa dig.: C: 88.2–97.6%; PL: 9.3–43.0%; prc. cp dig.: C: 79.1–82.3%; PL: 26.1–40.9%) were found. Digestion of starch was only moderately reduced in PL (prc. st dig.: C: 97.2–99.7%, PL: 61.9–92.5%). Up to 2.6 g of starch and 0.98 g of cp per kg body weight were digested postileally in PL, while postileal cfa digestion was negligible or negative (indicating microbial fat synthesis). Total tract digestibility of st did not differ between C and PL while dig. rate of cp was markedly reduced in PL. The studies permit an evaluation and quantification of the high compensative capacity of the hindgut especially in case of influx of large amounts of starch due to reduced prc. digestibility.  相似文献

To describe the differential diagnoses, investigation, and management of a periocular swelling close to the nasolacrimal duct in a horse that was consistent with a nasolacrimal duct dacryops (lacrimal cyst). A 16‐year‐old gelding, Connemara cross presented with a history of a periocular swelling rostroventral medial to the right eye that had been sampled by the referring veterinary surgeon. A cystic lesion was diagnosed following standing computed tomography. Surgical removal of the cystic lesion was performed, and the tissue was submitted for histopathologic and immunohistochemical examination. Surgical removal of the cyst was curative, and there was no recurrence of clinical signs 7 months later. There was a small amount of mineralized material in the center of the cyst. Histopathologic and immunohistochemical examination confirmed a nasolacrimal duct cyst. Dacryops can form in horses as well as other species and appears to have a favorable outcome if surgically removed.  相似文献

Objective

To determine if the pulmonary to systemic flow ratio (Qp/Qs) could be assessed in healthy awake dogs using Doppler echocardiography.

Background

Qp/Qs could provide reliable information in assessing the severity of intracardiac shunts (ICS) by quantifying pulmonary overcirculation. Qp/Qs has been validated against electromagnetic flowmeter methods in experimental canine models. However, its clinical applicability in awake dogs has never been assessed.

Animals, materials and methods

Six healthy dogs were used to determine the repeatability and reproducibility of the technique (Study 1); Qp/Qs was then prospectively assessed in 50 healthy dogs (Study 2). In both studies Qp/Qs was calculated in awake animals using a standardized Doppler echocardiographic method.

Results

Within- and between-day coefficients of variation for Qp/Qs were <10% (Study 1). For Study 2, a relatively wide range of Qp/Qs was found (reference range = 0.71-1.29; mean ± SD = 1.00 ± 0.15).

Conclusions

Qp/Qs can be assessed with good repeatability and reproducibility in healthy dogs. However, the wide range of Qp/Qs obtained in the healthy population may suggest a limited usefulness of this variable for accurately assessing ICS severity in diseased animals. This needs to be assessed in further prospective and longitudinal studies including a large number of animals with ICS of various grades.  相似文献
