Faecal egg count and pasture larval studies on N battus and N filicollis in lambs showed distinct differences in epidemiology, the infective larvae of N battus hatching over a short restricted period in spring, whereas those of N filicollis show an extended period of hatching, beginning in autumn and increasing steadily through the winter to reach a spring peak. This difference was considered to be responsible for the much slower annual rate of increase recorded for N filicollis. Pasture infection with both species survived ploughing and reseeding, though in very small numbers, and one year's rest from sheep by alternate grazing with cattle proved equally effective in reducing the carryover of infection, and offered a practical method of controlling these species.  相似文献

The behaviour of Dermanyssus gallinae was investigated on two layer farms where two different light programs were introduced in the 40th week of hen life. In layer house No. 1, light was applied continuously for 16 hours during the day, while layer house No. 2 was subjected to 4 hours of light and 2 hours of darkness applied alternately during the day. To monitor the level of red mite infestation, 30 tube traps were placed in every layer house corridor at a height of 1.5 m above the floor. In the first layer house, 280 Dermanyssus gallinae females, 50 nymph larvae and 198 eggs were found in 100 mg of tube trap material during 16 hours of the light phase, while during the 8-hour darkness phase, 1240 females, 70 nymph larvae and 110 eggs were collected. In the other layer house (with an alternating light phase of 4 hours and a darkness phase of 2 hours per day), 387 Dermanyssus gallinae females, 401 nymph larvae and 1060 eggs were found in trap tubes over the 8-hour dark phase, while 343 females, 202 nymph larvae and 1106 eggs were discovered over the 16-hour light phase.  相似文献

A study following the development of Cyathostominae from egg to the infective larval third stage was conducted from April to December 2001 in west central Scotland. Duplicate samples (1 kg) of naturally infected faeces were placed on a 78 cm2 plot each week on a cyathostomin-free pasture. Subsamples of the grass surrounding the faecal plot were collected weekly on four occasions and the number of larvae obtained determined. Few larvae were recovered in the first week of development of individual plots, followed by a rise in the numbers of larvae in second, third and fourth weeks of development of each sample. The climatic conditions were seen to have an effect on the rate of development. Specifically, from multilevel, multivariable linear regression models it was evident that the factors associated with numbers of infective larvae recovered from pasture were the time since the faeces samples were laid down, the average temperature and rainfall during the previous week, as well as the interaction between temperature and rainfall. Conversely, from the model, the number of larvae recovered from pasture was associated with neither the number of eggs within the faeces samples placed on the plots nor with the viability of these eggs.  相似文献

Each month for a 1-year period (October through September), equine fecal masses containing eggs of strongylid nematodes were placed outdoors on small grass plots in Saskatchewan, Canada. Thereafter, feces and grass from the plots were sampled after intervals of 1 week or longer, and the strongylid eggs and larvae recovered were counted. These observations were made over a 2-year period. Development of eggs to infective larvae occurred in all experiments, except those established in October, December, and January. Infective larvae from experiments set up in April through September survived that winter. During the summer, there was a gradual build up of infective larvae in the fecal masses, which reached a peak in August and September and then decreased into the winter. These results are discussed in the context of the control of strongylid parasites of horses on the Canadian prairie and in other areas of the world with a similar climate and similar horse management practices.  相似文献

Transmission of equine cyathostomes (Strongylidae) in central Texas   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
After foaling, 6 mares and their foals were placed on equine parasite-free pastures. Observations of fecal nematode eggs and pasture larvae indicated peak cyathostome egg production occurred in late August and early September, with greatest numbers of larvae on the forage appearing during October. Two foals were necropsied for parasitologic evaluations at approximately 155 days of age. Both had approximately 100,000 adult cyathostomes, mostly Cylicostephanus longibursatus, Cylicocyclus nassatus and Cyathostomum catinatum. However, there were nearly 7 times more cyathostome larvae (189,004) in the foal necropsied in October, during the autumn rise in pasture larval populations, than in the foal examined in September (27,354).  相似文献

Libyostrongylus douglassii, a pathogenic trichostrongylid nematode of the ostrich, was recently identified as a potentially important parasite in ostriches on Swedish farms. This parasite is well adapted to the hot and dry climates of sub-Saharan Africa, the natural habitat of the ostrich. The influence of low temperatures in colder climates, such as in Sweden, on free-living stages of L. douglassii is however insufficiently known. In this study, parasite free ostrich faeces were mixed with infective L(3)-stage larvae of L. douglassii, which had been cultured from eggs obtained from two Swedish farms. Samples of the mixture were placed on a grass surface, and analyses for L(3)-stage larvae were performed at regular intervals. The results of the study showed that L(3)-stage larvae may remain alive during a period of at least 97 days on pasture during the winter season in Sweden, even when the temperature within the samples was repeatedly below -0.1 degrees C, and the air temperature varied between -19.6 and +14.9 degrees C. It was concluded that L(3)-stage larvae of L. douglassii probably have the ability to remain viable on pastures during winter in Sweden.  相似文献

As part of a study on the epidemiology of Nematodirus species of sheep in subarctic Greenland, the development and persistence of eggs and larvae were investigated by experimentally contaminating plots of pasture with infected faeces and by placing tubes containing a suspension of eggs on to or into the soil. Despite low ambient temperatures, infective larvae appeared within a month during the summer. The greatest numbers of larvae were recovered from herbage in August and September. Eggs did not develop synchronously as development beyond the morula stage could be delayed for up to two years. Larvae were found on herbage for up to 37 months after faecal deposition. In the sheep rearing area of Greenland, therefore, Nematodirus species larvae can be present on herbage throughout the whole summer but peak numbers occur late in the grazing season.  相似文献

Lambs grazing certain legumes have reduced parasite intensities compared to lambs grazing ryegrass swards. Eighteen replicates of white clover (cv. AberHerald), lucerne (cv. Luzelle), red clover (cv. Merviot) and perennial ryegrass (cv. Abersilo) were sown at equivalent field rates in 25 cm diameter PVC pots and maintained outside for 6 months. On day 0, forage in each pot was cut to 50 mm from soil level and the pots were placed in a glasshouse (at 19-25 degrees C and 70% humidity) in a randomised block design. Ten grams sheep faeces containing 2,133 Haemonchus contortus eggs per gram were placed on the soil in each pot. Six replicates of each forage were destructively sampled on days 14, 21 and 29. Forage samples were cut at 50 mm from the soil surface and at the soil surface to give two samples per pot. The number of nematodes was determined by a modification of the Whitehead tray method. The ratio of free-living to infective-stage larvae was determined from at least 10% of the larvae. The number of H. contortus larvae kgdrymatter(-1) (DM) forage was calculated and the data rank transformed prior to analysis by ANOVA. There were fewer larvae on legumes compared with ryegrass on samples from forage above 50 mm (P<0.001) but there was no forage effect on larvae below this height. The sum of larvae present on all forage per kilogram DM showed fewer larvae on red clover compared with ryegrass on day 21 (P<0.05). There was an effect of day on the total number of larvae on forage (P<0.001) but there were no foragexday interactions. Analysis of the data according to the leaf area above 50 mm from the soil surface confirmed these results, that there were fewer larvae on legume forages than ryegrass above this height (P<0.01). Overall, red clover affected the development of H. contortus and all legumes affected larval migration above 50 mm compared with ryegrass but survival of larvae was similar on all forages. Further work is needed to determine if these effects of legume forages would reduce the number of parasitic larvae ingested by livestock under field conditions.  相似文献

Infective Cooperia oncophora larvae were temperature and light conditioned by holding them at various temperatures and daily light intensities for up to 56 days prior to administration to parasite-free calves via stomach tube. The calves were killed either on day 20 or day 21 postinfection. A marked (up to 80.5%) inhibition of development occurred in larvae held at 4 degrees C while little or no inhibition occurred in larvae held at room temperature or in fresh larvae. Marked inhibition also occurred in larvae held at 15 degrees C for 56 days while a low rate of inhibition occurred in larvae held at 17 degrees C for 42 days. Low incidence of inhibition was recorded in two of four calves given larvae held at ambient temperatures of mid-summer while appreciable inhibition of development of larvae occurred in two calves permitted to graze during the second and third week of September in 1975. Temperature conditioning of C. oncophora eggs for 27 days did not result in inhibition of development of infective larvae subsequently cultured from the eggs. Photoperiod or the presence of light did not have any appreciable effect on the development of inhibition of C. oncophora under the conditions of these investigations.  相似文献

Larval counts were made on mice 2 days after oral inoculation with X-ray (0-320 Krad) or of gamma ray (0-6 Mrad) irradiated eggs containing second-stage Toxocara canis larvae. The majority of the larvae irradiated with 0-40 Krad were recovered from the liver and lungs, while most of the larvae irradiated with 80 or 160 Krad remained in the digestive tract, mainly in the stomach and the proximal half of the small intestine. Only a small number of the 320 Krad irradiated larvae was recovered from the mice. No significant difference was observed in the viability of irradiated larvae incubated in vitro up to 13 days after irradiation. However, a substantial percentage of the 160 and 320 Krad-irradiated larvae hatched during that period. Very few larvae were recovered from the digestive tract of mice inoculated with eggs irradiated with 0.5 Mrad, and only one and four larvae were recovered from the liver and lungs of a mouse. No visceral larval migration was observed in mice inoculated with 1 Mrad-irradiated eggs. The minimum lethal radiation dose for second-stage T. canis larvae in eggs is proposed to be 1 Mrad.  相似文献

Infections with helminths are a major health issue in captive and wild deer. In this study, fecal egg count patterns and clinical signs associated with gastrointestinal nematodes were assessed for 12 mo in nine cervid herds kept under different husbandry conditions at two sites. At site 1, an urban zoo, fecal egg counts remained low and no clinical signs of parasitic gastroenteritis were seen in the herds of fallow deer (Dama dama), Dybowski's deer (Cervus nippon dybowski), pudu (Pudu pudu), and reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus). Helminth infection at this site may have been successfully prevented by daily dung removal of the small sandy-soil enclosures, and applying routine anthelmintic treatment was not justified. At site 2, a wild animal park, involved species were red deer (Cervus elaphus hippelaphus), Nelson's elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni), Père David's deer (Elaphurus davidianus), European elk (Alces alces alces), and reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus). Nematode eggs were frequently encountered in herds of red deer, Nelson's elk, and European elk, which were kept on larger, grassy enclosures that were irregularly cleaned. The trimodal pattern of fecal egg counts in herds from the wild animal park, consisting of a small spring rise in June, a peak in October, and a small rise in February, indicates that infective larvae on pastures are the main source of infection. In addition, routine anthelmintic treatment with fenbendazole in April and July limited egg shedding, but reinfection rapidly occurred. In two European elk and one reindeer, increasing fecal egg counts were associated with loss of fecal consistency and reduced appetite. Three genera and three species of nematodes were recovered at necropsy of one red deer and three Nelson's elk: Spiculopteragia spiculoptera, Trichostrongylus spp., Nematodirus filicollis, Capillaria spp., Oesophagostomum radiatum, and Trichuris spp., with total worm counts between 950 and 8,700.  相似文献

The study investigated the effect of gastrointestinal passage in pigs on free-living stages of bovine nematodes. Two Landrace x Yorkshire pigs, A and B, were fed fresh eggs of Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora while two other pigs, C and D, were fed third stage larvae (L3) of the same parasites. Faeces from the pigs were collected for 48 h after ingestion. In pigs A and B, 15 and 66% of the eggs were recovered after passage, respectively. However, only 0.003 and 0.002% of the ingested eggs developed into third stage larvae (L3) after subsequent culturing. In pigs C and D, 0.01 and 0.02% of the L3 survived the passage of the gastrointestinal tract. Fresh O. ostertagi and C. oncophora eggs were cultured in parasite free porcine and bovine faeces. Only 0.05% L3 developed in porcine faeces, whereas 21% of the eggs developed into L3 in the bovine culture. Our results demonstrate an extremely poor rate of development and survival of both bovine nematode eggs and infective larvae after passage in pigs. It may imply that pigs can play an important role in reducing transmission of cattle nematodes if the two species are grazed together or alternately.  相似文献

Investigations were made into the timing of administration of Duddingtonia flagrans as a biological control agent against ovine parasitic nematodes including stongylid and Nematodirus spp. Faeces from 3-4 months old male lambs were deposited onto pasture plots that had never been grazed by sheep. The trial was conducted over two consecutive years (1998 and 1999). For both years, the following three plot types were involved: Sim plots had faeces containing nematode eggs and Duddingtonia flagrans spores deposited simultaneously; Post plots had faeces containing nematode eggs followed 2 weeks later by faeces containing D. flagrans spores alone; Control plots had faeces containing only nematode eggs; Prior plots (included in 1999) had faeces containing D. flagrans spores alone followed 2 weeks later by faeces containing nematode eggs. In each year, two deposition periods were involved: July and August in 1998 and June and July in 1999. During the first year pasture samples were collected at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 12 weeks after initial deposition. In 1999, additional samples were collected at 10, 16 and 20 weeks. Larvae were extracted from the pasture samples and counts performed to estimate the number and species of infective third-stage (L(3), larvae) present. The number of third-stage strongylid larvae on pasture was significantly lower on Sim plots compared to the remaining plot types for both years at all deposition times (P<0.001). This was also the case for the number of Nematodirus infective larvae in August deposition plots in 1998 (P<0. 02). There was no significant difference between treatments in both deposition times in 1999 and July deposition plots in 1998 for the Nematodirus data. These results suggest that D. flagrans, if deposited at the same time as parasite eggs prevents transmission of third-stage larvae from the faecal deposit onto pasture, including occasionally Nematodirus species, but does not have an effect on third-stage parasitic nematode larvae in the surrounding soil.  相似文献

The influence of daily doses of 0.05–0.1 mg fenbendazole/kg body weight on egg development was tested in twenty-seven lambs artificially infected with Haemonchus contortus plus Trichostrongylus colubriformis or Ostertagia circumcincta, as well as in two additional sheep naturally infected with Nematodirus spp.Atypical eggs were detected before a reduction in the number of eggs. Atypical eggs had blastomeres of different sizes and shapes; knot-like, crater-like or bubble-like. In isolated cases eggs with atypical first larvae were recognizable. Morphologically changed eggs occurred in the reproductive organs of female O. circumcincta worms.None, or only a very small number of third stage larvae, could be cultured from the faeces of treated sheep.  相似文献

Contrasting herbage diets were fed to lambs to evaluate their effect on subsequent development of Trichostrongylus colubriformis larvae in faeces and on pasture. The diets had either no condensed tannin (CT), lucerne (Medicago sativa cv. Otaio), white clover (Trifolium repens cv. Tahora), or had moderate to high concentrations of CT, sulla (Hedysarum coronarium cv. Grassland Aokau), Lotus corniculatus (cv. Grasslands Goldie), L. pedunculatus (cv. Grassland Maku), Dorycnium pentophyllum, and Dorycnium rectum. Trials were carried out in summer (warm) and in autumn (cool and moist). In summer, egg viability was evaluated in vitro with egg hatch and larval development assays. In both seasons faeces were placed on pasture to compare recovery of eggs and larvae from faeces and larvae from herbage on the high and low fertility farmlets on the AgResearch Ballantrae Hill Country Research Station. D. rectum and D. pentophyllum diets decreased (P<0.01) egg hatching and larval development in laboratory assays relative to other diets. In summer, the number of larvae recovered from faeces placed on pasture was far greater (P<0.001) if the lambs had been fed lucerne than any other diet, whereas recovery was always lowest from faeces of sheep fed D. rectum and D. pentophyllum. Although dietary differences were lower in autumn than in summer, larval recoveries were lower (P<0.05) from faeces of lambs fed D. rectum and L. corniculatus than from white clover, lucerne and sulla diets. This study indicates that the diet of the host can have a significant impact on egg hatching and the subsequent development of T. colubriformis larvae in the laboratory and in the field. In particular, D. rectum consistently reduced T. colubriformis development. Effects measured in vitro generally under-estimated effects measured under field conditions.  相似文献

A study was conducted to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of doramectin administered intramuscularly at a dose rate of 200 microg/kg to sheep harbouring naturally acquired infections of gastrointestinal nematodes and Oestrus ovis in the southwestern region of France. On day 0, 24 sheep were selected on the basis of positive faecal egg counts (>100 EPG) and positive assessment of O. ovis infection (including positive O. ovis antibody level and positive clinical score). The sheep were randomly allocated to a non-medicated control group (T1) or a doramectin-treated group (T2) of 12 animals each. On day 0, sheep in group T2 received a single intramuscular injection of doramectin (200 microg/kg), whereas those in group T1 received an intramuscular injection of saline solution (sodium chloride, 0.02ml/kg). Individual faecal egg counts were performed on days 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 14. Between days 14 and 16, all sheep were slaughtered, and worm and O. ovis burdens were determined. In doramectin-treated sheep, faecal egg counts had decreased to zero by day 4 for all recovered types of nematode eggs: strongyles, Nematodirus sp., Trichuris sp., and Rhabditidae sp. For strongyles, Nematodirus sp., and Rhabditidae, the percentage reductions in faecal egg counts (geometric means) of doramectin-treated sheep, compared to the non-medicated control sheep were 100% from days 4-7. For Trichuris sp., they were 100, 99.7, 99.9, and 100% on days 4, 5, 6, and 7, respectively. On day 14, percentage reductions were 100% for Nematodirus sp. and Rhabditidae, and 99.8 and 99.1% for strongyles and Trichuris sp., respectively. At necropsy, only adult nematodes and mainly first-stage O. ovis larvae were recovered. Doramectin was highly efficacious against the adult stages of Teladorsagia circumcincta (100%), Nematodirus battus (100%), Nematodirus filicollis (99.9%), Oesophagostomum venulosum (99.8%), and Trichuris sp. (99.3%). It was also 100% efficacious against first-stage larvae of O. ovis. No abnormal clinical signs or adverse reactions in any of the sheep treated with doramectin were observed.  相似文献

The effects of condensed tannins extracted from seven forages on the viability of the eggs and first stage (L1) larvae of the sheep nematode Trichostrongylus colubriformis were evaluated in in vitro assays. The extracts of condensed tannins were obtained from Lotus pedunculatus (LP), Lotus corniculatus (LC), sulla (Hedysarum coronarium), sainfoin (Onobrychus viciifolia), Dorycnium pentaphylum (DP), Dorycnium rectum (DR) and dock (Rumex obtusifolius). Extracts containing 200 to 500 microg/ml reduced the proportion of eggs that hatched. The larval development assay was used to evaluate the effect of the extracts on the development of either eggs or L1 larvae to L3 infective larvae. Development was allowed to proceed for seven days by which time the larvae in control incubations had reached the infective L3 stage. Extracts containing 200 microg/ml from LP, DP, DR or dock prevented egg development, and only 11, 8 and 2 per cent of the eggs developed to L3 larvae with extracts from LC, sulla and sainfoin, respectively. When the concentration was 400 microg/ml no eggs developed to L3 larvae. The addition of the extracts after hatching also inhibited the development of L1 to L3 larvae; 200 microg/ml extracted from LP, LC, sulla, sainfoin, DP, DR and dock resulted in only 14, 18, 17, 15, 14, 16 and 4 per cent of L1 larvae developing to the L3 stage compared with 85 per cent for controls, and 400 microg/ml further reduced the development of L1 larvae. Statistical analyses showed that when the extracts were added before hatching they were significantly (P<0.001) more effective at inhibiting the larval development than when they were added after hatching. The condensed tannins from dock had the greatest inhibitory effect on egg development followed by the tannins from DR, sainfoin, DP, LP, sulla and LC.  相似文献

The faecal egg counts of groups of sheep given 5 000, 20 000 or 40 000 infective larvae of Ostertagia circumcincta reached a peak at about 28 days after infection; the height of the peak varying directly with the number of larvae given. At 35 days the ratios of total worm burdens and the total eggs in all females amongst the groups were similar. Between 35 and 70 days post infection the faecal egg counts fell to a low level which was roughly the same regardless of the number of larvae administered. At 70 days the two groups of lambs given the two higher doses of larvae had similar worm burdens, but those given 5 000 larvae harboured about half as many. At this time the total eggs in all females was approximately the same in each group. Whatever factor, in addition to worm numbers, which may have limited egg output appeared to be ineffective until some time after the peak egg count was reached.  相似文献
