The effects of harvest date of timothy on the chemical composition of herbage and silage, and on the voluntary intake, liveweight gain and feed conversion efficiency by finishing lambs, were evaluated. The herbage was harvested and ensiled on three dates: 16 June (before heading), 20 June and 26 June. The silages were analysed for chemical composition and degradation characteristics by an in vitro gas production (GP) technique with end-point measurements (72 h) of degradability of organic matter (OM) and neutral-detergent fibre (NDF). There were clear effects of later dates of harvest increasing the concentration of NDF, and reducing the degradability of OM and NDF, and the rate of GP, of silages made from this herbage. The silages were fed ad libitum to lambs in a feeding experiment using a Latin square design. Later harvest dates decreased the voluntary intake of silage, liveweight gain and feed conversion efficiency. Lambs fed the early-cut silage had a liveweight gain of 152 g d−1 and those fed the silage harvested 10 d later had a liveweight gain of 76 g d−1. Changes in the chemical composition of herbage and silage and in in vitro degradation characteristics of silages with later harvests were associated, to a large extent, with the reduction in voluntary intake and liveweight gain of lambs.  相似文献

Two experiments were carried out in Guadeloupe to estimate the organic matter intake (OMI) and digestibility (OMD) of a Dichanthium spp. sward, grazed by tethered Creole heifers [mean live weight (LW) 202 ± 2·0 kg], at three daily herbage allowances. Experiment 1 examined herbage allowances of 16, 25 and 31 kg of dry matter (DM) d–1 on a fertilized sward at 21 days of regrowth whereas, in experiment 2, lower allowances of 11, 15 and 19 kg DM d–1 were examined on the same sward, which was unfertilized and grazed at 14 days of regrowth. In each experiment, the herbage was grazed with three groups of two heifers in a 3 × 3 Latin square design. Sward characteristics were described before grazing. OMI was calculated from total faecal output, and OMD was predicted from the crude protein (CP) content of the faeces. The amount of herbage defoliated by the heifers was also estimated on tillers selected at random.
Organic matter intakes were on average 26 g and 19 g OM kg–1 LW, and OMD values were 0·740 and 0·665 for Experiments 1 and 2, respectively, and were not affected by allowance. In Experiment 1, the herbage quality was high [0·50 of leaf and 116 g CP kg–1 organic matter (OM)] for a tropical forage, whereas in Experiment 2, the quality of the herbage (0·27 of leaf and 73 g CP kg–1 OM) was lower. These differences were reflected in differences in intake and digestibility in the two experiments.
The experimental tropical Dichanthium spp. swards can have intake characteristics similar to those of a temperate sward.  相似文献

The changes in chemical composition of hay of kikuyu grass ( Pennisetum clandestinum ) harvested at 50, 70 and 90 d of regrowth, and its effect on intake, digestibility, fermentation and microbial protein synthesis in the rumen (Experiment 1) and oxygen uptake by portal-drained viscera (PDV) (Experiment 2) were evaluated. The experiments were carried out with Polwarth × Texel crossbreed lambs with a mean live weight (s.e.m.) of 35(3·0) kg housed in metabolic cages. Organic matter (OM), neutral-detergent fibre (NDF) and nitrogen (N) intake, as well as rumen ammonia-N concentration, decreased linearly with age of regrowth ( P  <   0·05). Acid-detergent fibre (ADF) and indigestible NDF intakes were similar for all treatments. Apparent digestibility of organic matter (OM), NDF and N, as well as true digestibility of OM, microbial protein synthesis in the rumen, N retention, pH of rumen fluid and sugars, amino acids and peptide concentrations in rumen fluid were similar for all treatments. Age of regrowth also did not affect the kinetics of passage of the particulate phase through the digestive tract nor oxygen uptake by PDV. Heat production by PDV represented an average of 0·039 of digestible energy (DE) intake. Increasing the age of regrowth of kikuyu grass from 50 to 90 d did not affect digestibility nor the efficiency of DE use by PDV tissues of lambs but it reduced the nutritive value of the hay due to a lower intake of OM. Intake of hay appeared to be most limited by the ADF and indigestible NDF concentrations of the hay.  相似文献

The effects of fasting on feeding behaviour, intake rates, and diet quality were studied with steers grazing vegetative Lolium multiflorum swards. Fasting interrupted the normal alternation of grazing and rumination and led to longer grazing times (0·65 vs. 0·45 of observed time), shorter rumination times (0·15 vs. 0·30 of observed time), and higher total dry matter (DM) intakes (6200 g DM vs. 3750 g DM d−1)-Fasting did not affect prehended bite size which averaged 047 g DM bite−1. Declining bite size within a day was explicable by changes in herbage mass. Biting rate (38.9 bites min−1) and instantaneous intake rate (2675 g DM min−1) of fasted animals were considerably higher than non-fasting animals in the mornings, but neutral detergent fibre (NDF) concentration of the diet (0 742 of organic matter) was generally not depressed by fasting. Consequently, non-fasted animals appeared to be feeding suboptimally since their nutrient intake rates were considerably lower than that which they are capable of exhibiting. Mastication rates per unit NDF intake were considerably lower in the morning for fasted animals (0·78 chews g−1 NDF intake) which suggested that their intake rates may have led to larger ingested particle size. Therefore, on Lolium multifiorum swards, the steers attained a higher intake rate by masticating the forage less while maintaining diet quality.  相似文献

Two experiments are reported. In the first experiment the amino acid compositions of rumen bacteria and protozoa isolated from sheep given a diet of grass silage were compared with those taken from sheep given a diet of hay and barley; four sheep were assigned to each diet. There were no significant differences (P<0·05) between diets in the amino acid compositions of the microbial fractions and bacterial contents of α-ɛ-diaminopimelic acid were also similar for both diets.
In the second experiment the digestion of a grass silage and barley diet (65:35; 135 g CP (kg DM)-1) was studied using four non-lactating Ayrshire cows fitted with cannulae in the rumen and in the proximal duodenum. The mean N intake was 154 g d-1 and the corresponding duodenal flow was 126 ± 10 g d-1 indicating that 0·21±0·07 of the N intake was absorbed between the mouth and the duodenum. The mean rumen NH3-N concentration was high, 297 g litre-1, and the mean rate of microbial protein synthesis in the rumen was low, 17 g microbial N (kg OM apparently digested in the rumen)-1. There was a low content of bacterial N in the non-ammonia N at the duodenum (mean proportion 0·52±005) and low concentrations of methionine and lysine in the duodenal digesta protein. The results are discussed in relation to previously published data on the digestion of silage diets in sheep and to the utilization of silage diets for milk production in the cow.
It is concluded that with silage diets the supply of methionine and lysine to the duodenum is likely to be low because of the low rates of microbial protein synthesis in the rumen and that in cows those two amino acids may be limiting for milk production.  相似文献

The effect of feeding either traditional concentrates containing starch or high quality fibrous concentrates on the performance of grazing dairy cows was examined in a trial in which cows were given concentrates with either 350 g starch and sugars (kg dry matter (DM))-1 (high-starch) or 100 g starch and sugars (kg DM)-1 (high-fibre). The swards used consisted predominantly of perennial ryegrass and were usually aftermaths following cutting. Each area was grazed for 3 or 4 d at each grazing and a two-machine sward-cutting technique was used for estimating herbage intake.
The effect of concentrate composition on the herbage intake of grazing cows at a high daily herbage allowance of 28 kg OM above 4 cm cutting height was investigated in 1983 and 1984. With 54 kg OM d-1 of high-starch concentrates the mean herbage intake was 11·5 kg OM d-1 per cow while cows fed 5.3 kg d-1 of high-fibre concentrates consumed on average 12–6 kg OM d-1. The mean substitution rate of herbage by concentrates was reduced from 0·45 kg herbage OM (kg concentrate OM)-1 with the high-starch concentrate to 0·21 with the high-fibre concentrates.
The effect of the treatments on milk production was studied in 1984. The cows consumed 5·5 kg OM d-1 as concentrates and grazed at a lower herbage allowance of 19 kg OM above 4 cm cutting height. With high-fibre concentrates milk production and 4% fat-corrected milk production were 13 and 1·8 kg d-1, respectively, higher than with the high-starch treatment. The daily live weight gain with the high-starch concentrates was 0·17 kg per cow more than with the high-fibre concentrates.  相似文献

The effect of maturity at harvest of whole-crop barley for ensiling on intake and liveweight gain of dairy steers differing in initial live weight (LW) was evaluated in an experiment over two years. Light (104–120 kg) and heavy (402–419 kg) dairy steers were fed diets containing predominantly whole-crop barley silage harvested at the milk stage [dry matter (DM) content of 284 g kg−1 and neutral-detergent fibre (NDF) concentration of 526 g kg−1 DM] or the dough stage of maturity (DM content of 328 g kg−1 and NDF concentration of 445 g kg−1 DM) and supplemented with up to 1 kg of concentrate. Dry matter intake (g kg−1 LW) was higher for whole-crop barley harvested at the dough stage than at the milk stage of maturity and the difference was greater in heavy than in light steers ( P <  0·001). Liveweight gain was higher and feed conversion ratio was lower for dough-stage compared with milk-stage silage ( P  <   0·05) but there was no interaction with size of steer. Whole-crop barley harvested at the dough stage of maturity promoted higher liveweight gains in dairy steers compared with whole-crop barley harvested at the milk stage due to a higher DM intake.  相似文献

A field-study was undertaken in Hamilton, New Zealand to determine if there was an interaction between water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) reserve content and defoliation severity on the regrowth of perennial ryegrass-dominant swards during winter. Perennial ryegrass plants with either low or high WSC content were obtained by varying the defoliation frequency. At the third defoliation at the one-leaf stage and at the first defoliation at the three-leaf stage (harvest H1), swards were mown with a rotary lawnmower to residual stubble heights of 20, 40 or 60 mm. All swards were then allowed to regrow to the three-leaf stage before again defoliating to their treatment residual stubble heights (H2). Frequently defoliated plants contained proportionately between 0·37 and 0·48 less WSC in the stubble after defoliation, depending on the severity of defoliation. There was no interaction between WSC content and defoliation severity for herbage regrowth between harvests H1 and H2. Herbage regrowth was lower from swards containing low WSC plants compared with high WSC plants (2279 vs. 2007 kg DM ha−1). Furthermore, swards defoliated to 20 or 40 mm had greater herbage regrowth compared with those defoliated to 60 mm (2266, 2249 and 1914 kg DM ha−1 for swards defoliated to residual stubble heights of 20, 40 and 60 mm, respectively). Regrowth of perennial ryegrass was positively correlated with post-defoliation stubble WSC content within defoliation severity treatment, implying that WSC contributed to the defoliation frequency-derived difference in herbage yield. However, the effect of defoliation severity on herbage regrowth was not associated with post-defoliation stubble WSC content.  相似文献

Effects of timing and rate of N fertilizer application on concentrations of P, K, S, Ca, Mg, Na, Cl, Mn, Fe, Cu and Zn in herbage from perennial ryegrass/white clover pastures were studied at two sites in south-western Victoria, Australia. Nitrogen fertilizer (0, 15, 25, 30, 45 and 60 kg ha–1) was applied as urea in mid-April, early May, mid-May, early June and mid-June 1996 to pastures grazed by dairy cows. At Site 1, N fertilizer resulted in a linear increase in P, K, S, Mg and Cl concentrations in herbage and a linear decrease in Ca concentration. For all times of application, concentrations of P, K, Ca, Mg and Cl in herbage increased by 0·0048, 0·08, −0·010, 0·0013 and 0·053 g kg–1 dry matter (DM) per kg N applied respectively. For S concentration, maximum responses occurred in mid-May (0·012 g kg–1 DM per kg N applied). At Site 2, N fertilizer resulted in a linear increase in P, S and Na concentrations in herbage, a linear decrease in Ca concentration and a curvilinear increase in K and Cl concentration. The maximum responses for P, S and K concentrations in herbage occurred for the N application in mid-June and were 0·015, 0·008 and 0·47 g kg–1 DM per kg N applied respectively. For Cl concentration, the maximum response occurred for the N application in early June and was 0·225 g kg–1 DM per kg N applied. Overall, applications of N fertilizer up to 60 kg ha–1 did not alter herbage mineral concentration to levels that might affect pasture growth or animal health.  相似文献

In North Vietnam, during winter, shortage of herbage constrains the profitability of dairy farming. The first objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of alternative temperate (C3) forage species, namely common oat ( Avena sativa L.), lop-sided oat ( Avena strigosa Schreb.), Italian ryegrass ( Lolium multiflorum L.) and a commercial forage mixture (Avex), to address the shortage of herbage during winter in the mountain regions of North Vietnam. The second objective was to measure the effects of cultural practices (sowing rate, harvest interval and irrigation level) on yield of dry matter (DM), chemical composition, digestibility of DM and metabolizable energy (ME) concentration of herbage from the best adapted C3 species previously tested (lop-sided oat). Four experiments were conducted. Oat species proved to be the best adapted species and produced the highest annual yield of herbage (7600 kg DM ha−1) with a high nutritive value. Yields of DM of lop-sided oat were not affected by sowing rate of seed but increased as the length of harvest intervals increased from 30 to 45 and 60 d ( P  <   0·001). Crude protein concentration, digestibility of DM and ME concentration decreased as the harvest interval increased ( P  <   0·01). Irrigation increased the yields of DM of lop-sided oats by 1·3 ( P  <   0·05) but had no effect on the nutritive value of herbage. It is concluded that both common oat and lop-sided oat are suitable species to provide herbage in the winter for the mountain regions of North Vietnam.  相似文献

Changes in the crude protein (CP) concentration of white clover and perennial ryegrass herbage from a mixed sward were determined on six sampling dates from May to October in each of 2 years. The swards were grown without fertilizer N in an organic farming system and continuously grazed by dairy cows during the grazing season. The annual mean contents of white clover in the dry matter (DM) of the sward were 272·3 and 307·0 g kg−1 in Years 1 and 2. The mean CP concentrations of the white clover and perennial ryegrass herbage were 251·6 and 151·9 g kg−1 DM in Year 1 and 271·9 and 174·0 g kg−1 DM in Year 2 respectively. The CP concentration of the white clover increased significantly during the grazing season from 220·0 to 284·1 g kg−1 DM in Year 1 and from 269·0 to 315·5 g kg−1 DM in Year 2. In the perennial ryegrass herbage the CP concentration increased from 112·2 to 172·6 g kg−1 DM in Year 1 and from 142·7 to 239·5 g kg−1 DM in Year 2. The rate of increase during the season in the CP concentration of the perennial ryegrass herbage was similar to the rate of increase recorded in the white clover herbage.  相似文献

This paper reports the effects of onset of phenological maturity on the nutritive value of white clover ( Trifolium repens L.). The study comprised (i) examination of an extensive data set on nutritive value and (ii) investigation of the constituents of nutritive value, in vivo feeding value, protein degradability and metabolizable protein content of white clover harvested at three stages of maturity (early-flowering, full-flowering, ripe seed stages) during the primary growth phase in spring in Australia. The data set on nutritive value showed a consistent pattern of high nutritive value during cool season months, progressive decline through spring and uniformly lower nutritive value over summer. Results from laboratory determinations, in sacco degradability studies and a digestibility trial on white clover harvested at early-flowering, full-flowering and ripe seed stages were consistent with results from the data set on nutritive value. Onset of maturity during the primary growth phase in spring was accompanied by large changes in nutritive value: neutral-detergent fibre (NDF) increased from 184 to 301 g kg−1 dry matter (DM), nitrogen (N) declined from 36 to 20 g kg−1 DM, in vitro digestibility declined from 0·74 to 0·65 and metabolizable protein content declined from 144 to 67 g kg−1 DM from early-flowering to ripe seed stage. These nutritive value changes were accompanied by a decline of in vivo digestibility at the rate of 0·0032 d−1 and an 0·2 reduction in voluntary intake.  相似文献

The agronomic performance and nutritive value of twelve annual and perennial grasses and legumes were analysed in order to define alternatives to local forages for dry-season feeding of ruminants in the Peruvian Andes. There were twelve species and two fertilizer treatments (no fertilizer and a N;P;K fertilizer mainly applied at sowing) in an experiment with a randomized complete block design with three replicates at each of two sites. Plant height, soil cover by forage and weed species, frost damage, dry matter (DM) yield and nutritive value of herbage were evaluated in 2005 and 2006. Among the annual species, Hordeum vulgare L. cv. UNA 80 and × Triticosecale Wittm. had the highest DM yields when fertilized (8226 and 6934 kg ha−1 respectively). Without fertilizer the alternative cultivars had similar DM yields to that of the local forages. Cultivars of Avena sativa L. had lower concentrations of neutral-detergent fibre (NDF) (557 g kg−1 DM) and higher concentrations of predicted net energy for lactation (5·86 MJ kg−1 DM) than the other annual grass species (625 g kg−1 DM and 5·01 MJ kg−1 DM respectively), while the legumes were superior in concentrations of crude protein (277 g kg−1 DM) and NDF (362 g kg−1 DM). Considering the low agronomic performance of the perennial forages, a mixture of fertilized annual grasses and legumes appears the most appropriate approach to meeting the demand for forage of high nutritive value in the Peruvian highlands.  相似文献

The aim of the experiment was to assess the effect of applying, at commercially recommended rates, formic acid or formic acid/formaldehyde at ensilage upon the subsequent digestion of the silages by cattle. Three wilted grass silages were made from perennial ryegrass ensiled at a DM concentration of 206 g kg−1 after a poor wilting period of 49 h without additive application and with application of 2.5 litres t−1 of formic acid or of 4.5 litres t−1 of a mixture of (gkg−1) 500 formic acid, 200 sulphuric acid and 200 formatin giving an application rate of 15 g formaldehyde kg−1 herbage crude protein (N × 6.25).
The silages were fed to cattle equipped with rumen cannulae and duodenal re-entrant cannulae. Results from analyses of silage composition and from the digestion of organic matter and N showed no major differences between silages. The efficiency of rumen microbial N synthesis, the rumen degradability of silage N (determined in vivo or in sacco ) and in vivo digestion of individual amino acids were also unaffected by additive treatment. These results indicate that poor wilting conditions before ensilage restricted the effectiveness of additive treatment; the ineffectiveness of formaldehyde in reducing the rumen degradability of silage N may also have been related to the low rate of formaldehyde application.  相似文献

Semi-natural grasslands often serve as important reserves of biodiversity. In Europe extensive grazing by livestock is considered an appropriate management to conserve biodiversity value and to limit shrub encroachment. However, little is known about the influence of shrubs on agronomic values. A gradient analysis of shrub-invaded temperate grasslands (from shrub-free to pioneer forest) in Germany was carried out to test the hypothesis that herbage mass and variables describing nutritive value of herbage decrease with increasing shrub encroachment. The herbage mass of dry matter (DM), variables describing the nutritive value of herbage, composition of the vegetation and mean of Ellenberg's indicator values were analysed with respect to the extent of shrubs. There was a reduction of herbage mass of DM from 3570 to 210 kg ha−1 with increasing shrub encroachment. Metabolizable energy concentration of herbage ranged from 8·9 to 10·2 MJ kg−1 DM and crude protein concentration from 72 to 171 g kg−1 DM, both measures being positively correlated with shrub occurrence. Increasing shrub occurrence was associated with a decrease in water-soluble carbohydrates concentration (from 151 to 31 g kg−1) and a reduction in the indicator 'forage value'. The results indicate a potentially large agronomic value for shrub-encroached temperate grasslands.  相似文献

In official forage grass variety trials in the UK, herbage samples are dried at 100°C or more to facilitate quick drying of the large numbers of samples that are currently needed. When assessing herbage quality, however, 80°C has been recommended as the highest temperature that can be used during drying without serious deterioration. Herbage from six perennial ryegrass varieties, which were known to show a range of variation in in vitro concentration of digestible dry matter (DMD) and water-soluble carbohydrate concentration (WSC) during the vegetative phase of growth, was dried in an oven with forced ventilation at 100°C and at 80°C before analysis. Mean DMD over all varieties was slightly lower [6 g kg−1 dry matter (DM)] and mean WSC over all varieties was considerably lower (24 g kg−1 DM) at 100°C. Varieties differed in mean DMD over both drying temperatures by 37 g kg−1 DM and in mean WSC by 63 g kg−1 DM. There was, however, no significant interaction between variety and drying temperature for either DMD or WSC. Although drying at the higher temperature underestimated both DMD and WSC, it did not significantly alter the ranking of varieties or the range among them.  相似文献

The effects of NH4+−N, NO3-N or urea-N addition on N uptake by perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ), 15N recovery and pH of four limed and unlimed soils were determined in a pot experiment over 10 weeks. The best form of N in terms of herbage N uptake and fertilizer recovery differed between the soils. Recovery of applied 15N in herbage was greatest for the soil with the lowest pH and highest organic matter content, and overall recovery in the soil–plant system was influenced more by soil type than by N form. There was always an apparent mineralization of soil N when perennial ryegrass was present. Soil pH changes ranged from +0·11 to −0·58 units for the unlimed soils and from +0·03 to −1·06 units for the limed soils. The use of NO3-N rather than NH4+-N or urea-N avoided further acidification. Lime increased herbage N only from the soils with the lowest pH values. Although the acidifying effect of NH4+-fertilizer was alleviated, liming may increase nitrification and possibly N loss via denitrification and/or leaching in the field.
The major influence of soil type on herbage N uptake, pH response to the treatments and fertilizer recoveries implies that liming and fertilizer N management decisions should consider soil characteristics, such as organic matter, clay contents and pH.  相似文献

Six lucerne ( Medicago sativa ) genotypes (Beaver, Vernal and four other strains being developed at the University of Alberta) and five smooth bromegrass ( Bromus inermis ) genotypes (Carlton, Magna and three genotypes being developed) were examined in terms of forage dry matter (DM) yield and degradability, as determined by the rate and amount of material which disappeared from bags suspended in the rumen of cattle. Dry matter yield did not differ ( p > 0·05) between lucerne genotypes at first cut. The smooth bromegrass strain 517 had a proportionately Oil higher ( P < 0·05) DM yield than did the Magna strain. No differences ( P < 0·05) were detected within either smooth bromegrass or lucerne genotypes for 48 or 60 h in situ DM degradability. The 416E smooth bromegrass genotype, however, had a significantly higher ( P < 0·05) rate of DM degradation in the rumen than the other genotypes and also exhibited a longer ( P < 0·05) lag period before a significant amount of DM degradability occurred. In the in situ technique, approximately eighteen bags would have been needed to obtain DM degradability measurements with a confidence interval of 0·04 for DM degradability of a probability of 0·95. Further in vivo studies with the bromegrass genotypes are warranted to ascertain if the differences in digestion rates and lag times are related to meaningful differences in animal intake and digestibility.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to examine the effect of concentrate supplementation on the performance of suckling lambs while grazing at variable levels of herbage allowance. Twenty-four ewes suckling twin lambs were allocated 55 d after lambing between four grazing treatments (two levels of herbage allowance × two levels of supplementation) in a 2×2 factorial design. The sward consisted of Tall Fescue and was grazed rotationally.
Daily herbage organic matter (OM) allowances were 57.0 (H) and 38.5 (L) g OM kg LW−1 above 1·5 cm cutting height. Lambs were either supplemented (S) ad libitum with high-moisture whole maize grain or unsupplemented (U).
Supplement intake during the 60-d grazing period was 16 kg DM and 17.5 kg DM respectively for LS and HS lambs. The effect of supplementation on lamb growth rate differed significantly between allowances: at the low allowance level, supplementation increased growth rate (287 g d−1 vs 226 g d−1), whereas it had no effect at the high level (277 g d−1 vs 276 g d−1). Growth rate of unsupplemented lambs was significantly reduced at the low level of allowance compared to the high level (226 g d−1 vs 276 g d−1). The effect of sward height on time spent grazing by unsupplemented lambs is described during the defoliation of a plot.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to examine the effect of time of day on the rate of intake of herbage by grazing dairy cows. Eight unsupplemented Holstein Friesian cows in their fourth month of lactation grazed grass swards maintained at a sward surface height of 6·5 cm. Commencing at 07.00, 11.30, 16.00 and 19.00 h, intake rates were estimated by measuring the liveweight change, corrected for insensible weight loss, over a period of 1 h while grazing. During the period of grazing, recordings of jaw movement activity were made to determine total eating time, number of grazing jaw movements (GJMs) and bites. Total eating time over 24 h was measured: once before and once after determination of intake rate.
Although time of day did not affect GJM rate, it had a quadratic effect on the proportion of GJMs represented by biting and non-biting jaw movements, resulting in a significant effect on bite rate. Bite rate showed a quadratic effect of time, decreasing between 07.00 and 11.30 h, and then increasing by 16.00 h to reach a maximum at 19.00 h (52·6, 47·5, 51·6 and 59·4 bites min−1 respectively). Bite mass (mg fresh matter bite−1) was greatest at 07.00 h because of the lower dry-matter (DM) content of the herbage and the presence of surface moisture at that time, but the effect of time of day was not significant. Mean bite mass measured as DM or organic matter (OM) differed significantly between the different times of day (332, 384, 481 and 402 mg DM and 302, 348, 438 and 367 mg OM bite−1 respectively). The net result of these differences in bite rate and bite mass was a linear increase in DM and OM intake rate over the day. The magnitude of such differences will have profound effects on mean daily intakes when calculated as the product of total eating time and intake rate.  相似文献
