An inhalation anaesthetic apparatus for the horse is described and the physiological concepts pertaining to its design presented. The internal diameter of all breathing components is 6.2 cm with no change in cross sectional area throughout the circle system. The soda lime capacity is 25 litres (approximately 20 kg). In the horse, which is apparently predisposed to alveolar hypoventilation during inhalation anaesthesia, it is apparent that adequate anaesthetic apparatus design should be directed towards minimising resistance and dead space and providing maximal and efficient carbon dioxide elimination.  相似文献

The Waters (to-and-fro) system is a commonly used anaesthetic system in small animal clinical practice. Although it may be used as a totally closed system, it has been recommended that it be used as a semi-closed system with relatively high fresh gas flow rates. The performance of the Waters system was studied with reference to wastage of neat, unused fresh gas flow. The results were compared with the performance of a modified Waters system. Using a fresh gas flow rate of 2 litres/minute considerable wastage of fresh gas flow and volatile agent was noted using the Waters system; the wastage was less with the modified system. Marked savings of fresh gas flow and volatile agent could result by reducing the fresh gas flow to 0.5 litres/minute. The findings are discussed in the light of current small animal clinical anaesthetic practice.  相似文献

Farmer perceptions on milk production and calf rearing practices on communal rangelands in the smallholder areas of the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa were evaluated on a total of 218 cattle farmers using structured questionnaires, semi-structured interviews with key informants and personal observations. Nearly 70% of the households in the small-scale areas milked twice a day compared to 60% in the communal areas. About 62% of the interviewees weaned calves between 6 and 12 months of age. Milk yield/cow/day (7.5 ± 0.5 litres), fresh milk consumption/household/day (3.2 ± 0.5 litres) and sales/household/day (3.1 ± 1.1 litres) were highest in the sour-veld, small-scale farms (P < 0.05). Sour milk consumption/household/day (2.6 ± 0.2 litres) and sales/household/day (0.8 ± 0.2 litres) were significantly high in communal farms with a sour-veld. It was concluded that, calf rearing practices were poor and milk yield, consumption and sales were generally low and varied with production system and rangeland type. Further research is required to improve calf management practices, cow nutrition, milk yield and quality and how milk production can be used as a toll for rural development in the smallholder areas of South Africa.  相似文献

The rate of flow of fluid from the caecum and from the large colon was measured in four Shetland-type ponies fed a hay diet. In two ponies with cannulas in the caecum and at the origin of the right ventral colon, a continuous intracaecal infusion of a solution of chromium EDTA was used and samples were obtained from the cannula at the origin of the right ventral colon. Based on four determinations, the liquid flow from the caecum was 54.2 +/- 1.89 litres d-1. In the other two ponies with cannulas in the origin of the right ventral colon and near the end of the right dorsal colon, a continuous infusion of chromium EDTA was made into the right ventral colon and samples were obtained from the right dorsal colon. The flow rate towards the end of the dorsal colon was 49.4 +/- 1.25 litres d-1, based on four determinations. The capacities of the caecum and large colon after death were 7.0 +/- 0.8 and 17.7 +/- 3.7 litres, respectively.  相似文献

Low-flow anaesthesia is beneficial in terms of reducing atmospheric pollution with waste anaesthetics and improving economy. This study compared a disposable circle and a 'to-and-fro' breathing system at low fresh gas flows (10 ml/kg/minute) in 19 dogs undergoing ovariohysterectomy. Ten dogs were assigned to the circle and nine to the to-and-fro breathing system. Fractional inspired halothane, end-tidal carbon dioxide and halothane were higher and mean blood pressure was lower in dogs using the to-and-fro system, possibly indicating an increased anaesthetic depth in this group. Use of both systems resulted in an elevated inspired carbon dioxide level, although this was significantly lower in the circle system. Further work will be required to determine the clinical relevance of this difference and whether rebreathing can be eliminated by higher fresh gas flows. The disposable circle studied may be used safely in dogs.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted on 12 prepuberal (18- to 20-week-old) Landrace cross Large White gilts to establish if differences in adrenal responsiveness between individuals could be explained by differences in the metabolic clearance rate (MCR) of cortisol. Pigs with the highest (n = 6) and lowest (n = 6) cortisol concentration 60 minutes after challenge with ACTH were selected from a pool of 36 commercial pigs. Tritium-labelled cortisol was infused (17 to 27 ml h-1) continuously for 120 minutes to establish 'steady state' conditions. Blood samples (10 ml) were collected at 90, 100, 110 and 120 minutes. Replicate experiments were performed on some pigs. Classification of individual pigs as high or low adrenal responders to ACTH challenge was confirmed at the end of the clearance rate experiments. The MCR of cortisol in the group classed as low adrenal responders was 59.7 +/- 7.8 litres h-1 or 1.01 litres h-1 kg-1 (n = 7) which was not significantly different from the average MCR in the group classed as high adrenal responders 60.2 +/- 5.9 litres h-1 or 1.19 litres h-1 kg-1 (n = 10). These results suggest that the repeatable differences in adrenal responsiveness to ACTH that exist between individuals within a particular strain of pig depend on differences in the rate of synthesis of cortisol in response to ACTH stimulation, rather than on differences in its rate of metabolism.  相似文献

Thirty-seven of 53 diarrhoeic calves hospitalised for intravenous fluid therapy were classified as very severely acidotic (total carbon dioxide less than 8 mmol/litre) by using a Harleco apparatus. All the calves were given intravenously 10 to 20 litres of electrolyte solution which contained 144 mmol/litre sodium, 4 mmol/litre potassium, 113 mmol/litre chloride and 35 mmol/litre bicarbonate, and in addition the 37 very severely acidotic calves received 400 ml of 1M sodium bicarbonate in the first 5 litres of fluid administered. Sixteen of the 37 very severely acidotic calves had a distended right flank, suggesting the presence of a dilated fluid-filled viscus. Neither their history nor other clinical signs were useful predictors of the distension. The distended calves had significantly higher plasma concentrations of sodium and chloride, and significantly lower plasma creatinine concentrations than the calves which were not distended. Treatment was successful in all the 21 non-distended calves but four of the distended calves died despite treatment. The resolution of the distension in the successfully treated calves, coincided with a significant increase in plasma bicarbonate concentration and the passage of large amounts of malodorous mucoid faeces.  相似文献

Interferon (IF) was induced in calf testicle monolayer cultures and leucocycte suspension cultures with Semliki forest virus and Newcastle disease virus to evaluate the potency of those cells for producing IF in large quantities for clinical experiments. Interferon activity was measured by an RNA-inhibition test using Semliki forest virus as challenge. To produce 10(6) units of IF, leucocytes from 67-5 litres of blood or 7-2 X 10(9) testicle cells were needed.  相似文献

The slow rate of change of inspired halothane concentration which results in a conventional large animal circle anesthetic delivery system when low carrier gas flow rates are used was confirmed, using a model system. To obtain a 63% change in inspired halothane concentration in the 32-L large animal circle anesthetic machine at fresh gas inflow rates of 3, 6, and 12 L/minute required 10.7, 5.3, and 2.7 minutes, respectively. At a given inflow rate, increasing the rebreathing bag size from 20 to 40 L prolonged the time for equilibration between the gas flowing into the anesthetic circuit and the inspired gas. The extent to which an adult horse further slowed the rate of rise of inspired anesthetic concentration was also demonstrated.  相似文献

Toxicological studies on wild animals play an important role in the ecotoxicological examination of pesticides. The applied model tests enable the assessment of toxicological consequences with particular regard to the life and nutrition of wild animals in the ploughed field among plants treated with pesticides. The application of different pesticide formulations on plough-land may pose a simultaneous chemical burden to wild birds. In this model study, manifestations of the interaction between an insecticide and a herbicide were studied in pheasants. The birds were placed on lucerne in cages (48 m2) and sprayed once. The applied doses were: Sumithion 50 EC 1 litre/ha + Fusilade S 6 litres/ha (practical doses) and Sumithion 50 EC 5 litres/ha + Fusilade S 30 litres/ha. The analytically determined pesticide concentration of the lucerne was taken as a basis in the further treatment of fodder. The fodder of pheasants contained the following chemicals: 85 mg/kg Sumithion 50 EC + 510 mg/kg Fusilade S and 425 mg/kg Sumithion 50 EC + 2250 mg/kg Fusilade S. Sporadic deaths observed among the pheasants were of traumatic origin and not due to a toxic effect. The decrease of body weight was significant only at the higher dose levels. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity of the blood decreased significantly in both dose groups. On the basis of the results obtained it can be established that at the dose level used in the practice the pesticides studied do not give rise to a toxic interaction in pheasants.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To describe the effects of changes in circuit volume and oxygen inflow rate on inspired oxygen concentration for a large animal circle anesthetic system. STUDY POPULATION: A large animal circle anesthetic system, a 10 L/min flowmeter, and 20- and 40-L breathing bags. PROCEDURE: Circuit volume was determined by a carbon dioxide dilution technique. Oxygen flow rates of 3, 6, and 10 L/min were delivered to the circuit with the large breathing bag, and a flow rate of 6 L/min was used with the small bag. Gas samples were collected during a 20-minute period. The time constant (tau) and half-time (T1/2) were calculated and compared with measured values. RESULTS: Mean +/- SEM volume of the breathing circuit with a 20- and 40-L breathing bag was 32.97 +/- 0.91 L and 49.26 +/- 0.58 L, respectively. The tau from measurements was 11.97, 6.10, and 3.60 minutes at oxygen flow rates of 3, 6, and 10 L/min, respectively, for the large breathing bag and 3.73 minutes at a flow rate of 6 L/min for the small breathing bag. The T1/2 was 8.29, 4.22, and 2.49 minutes at oxygen flow rates of 3, 6, and 10 L/min, respectively, for the large breathing bag and 2.58 minutes for the small breathing bag. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This study emphasizes that there are delays in the rate of increase in the inspired oxygen concentration that accompany use of conventional large animal circle anesthetic systems and low rates of inflow for fresh oxygen.  相似文献

Five isolated calf lungs were suspended in an airtight box used as a ventilator. Lungs were ventilated from the outside at different levels of transpulmonary pressure (Ptp). The static pressure-volume curve characteristics of the lungs were measured. Static compliance (Cstat) was 1.9 +/- 0.37 litres kPa-1 or 25 +/- 5 per cent of total lung capacity kPa-1. At a Ptp of 0.7 kPa, dynamic compliance (Cdyn) and lung resistance (RL) were 1.1 +/- 0.1 litres kPa-1 and 0.126 +/- 0.02 kPa litres sec-1, respectively. Both an increase and a decrease of this level of Ptp induced an increase of RL and a decrease of Cdyn. The ratio Cdyn/Cstat averaged 57 +/- 0.8 per cent. It was concluded that in excised lungs, Cdyn is lower in the calf than in a number of other species and that pulmonary function values measured in vitro are optimum at values of Ptp close to values recorded in vivo in healthy cattle.  相似文献

Objective To correctly define the theoretical treatment of oxygen wash‐in kinetics in circle breathing systems and reevaluate previously published results for the rate of change of oxygen concentration in a large animal circle breathing system. Study design Theoretical analysis of previously published data. Animals None. Methods Previously published data for the rate of change of oxygen concentration in a large animal circle breathing system with two reservoir bag sizes (40 and 20 L) at three different flow rates (3, 6, and 10 L minute?1) were obtained from the original publication, via digital extraction, and analyzed to determine system time constants. The results of this analysis were compared to those originally reported and the level of mathematical agreement between experiment and theory was quantified. Results Theoretical time constants for the system with 40 L reservoir bag with flow rates of 3, 6, and 10 L minute?1 were 16.4, 8.2, and 4.9 minutes, respectively. Experimentally derived time constants for this system with flow rates of 3, 6, and 10 L minute?1 were 18.1, 9.2, and 5.4 minutes, respectively. Percent differences between experimental and theoretical time constants for this system with flow rates of 3, 6, and 10 L minute?1 were 10.4, 12.2, and 10.2%, respectively. For the system with a 20 L reservoir bag and 6 L minute?1 flow rate, the theoretical and experimentally derived time constants were 5.5 and 5.6 minutes, respectively, with a 1.8% difference. The average relative deviations between theory and experiment for the system at 6 L minute?1 flow with a 40 or 20 L reservoir bag were 1.3% and 3.0%, respectively. Conclusions and clinical relevance Proper theoretical analysis of experimentally obtained data for the wash‐in kinetics of oxygen into a large animal circle breathing system leads to improved mathematical agreement between theory and experiment when compared to the originally published results. Application of this method should allow more accurate prediction of the rate of change of oxygen concentration in anesthetic circuits.  相似文献

If the fresh gas flows are higher than the uptake of the gases by the body, the circle system is a semiclosed circle system. This paper attempts to quantitatively characterize the cerebral arterial circle in the chinchilla using a computerized image-analysis system. The sole source of the blood supply to the brain in this animal is the vertebral arteries and the basilar arteries. It was found that the diameter and volume of the basilar artery were over twofold larger than those of cerebral-circle arteries. The total length of the cerebral-circle arteries was approximately two times greater than the length of the basilar artery. A strong correlation between the parameters of the basilar artery and the total volume of the arterial circle was observed, as might be expected. These results suggest that if appropriate geometrical parameters are maintained, the brain can be adequately vascularized, even in the absence of additional blood supply.  相似文献

The kinetics and efficacy of a cinchophen prednisolone combination preparation (PLT) were assessed in the dog. Cinchophen administered at a dose rate of 12-5 mg/kg intravenously had a volume of distribution (Vd area) of 0–13 litres/kg, a clearance rate (Cl) of 0–15 litres/h and a half-life (t 1/2β of 7–92 hours. Following oral administration the bioavailability was 87-21 per cent. Prednisolone administered at a dose rate of 0–15 mg/kg intravenously had a Vd area of 2–7 litres/kg, a CI of 0–116 litres/h and a t1/2β of 1–11 hours. PLT given to dogs with osteoarthritis at a dosage range of between 25 and 44 mg/kg per day cinchophen and between 0–125 and 0–220 mg/kg per day prednisolone for a maximum of 14 days significantly improved lameness (P<0–001), weight bearing (P<0–005), joint mobility (P<0–01) and stiffness (P<0–001) scores and was similar in clinical efficacy to phenylbutazone.  相似文献

The impact of clinical paratuberculosis in a 500 cow Jersey x Holstein dairy herd of loose housing system was followed up for three years. There was an increasing fall in annual milk production, namely 49, 474, and 1030 litres per cow, a decrease in the average age from 63.9 to 57.0 months, and of feed conversion from 60 to 39%. The effect of certain management deficiencies, existing throughout the study, is discussed.  相似文献

Czechoslovak ventilator ELVENT designed for artificial respiration in human was tested in dogs. SO experimental dogs were divided into 3 groups. The animals were under halothane anaesthesia and myorelaxation with artificial ventilation for 120–180 min. Before, during and after experiments at set intervals heart rate, temperature, ECG and acid-base balance (ABB) from venous and arterial blood values of blood-gases, concentrations of potassium and haemoglobin were determined. The model of ventilation program chosen in the third series appears to be the most acceptable for the clinical use. Ventilator parameters were set as follows: respiratory rate from 15 to 20 breaths per min, respiratory min volume from 1.5 to 3 litres, tidal volume from 0.15 to 03 litres. The duration of inspiration was from 0.8 to 1.2 sec., the duration of expiration was double this. Changes in ABB parameters and the tension of blood gases demonstrated the development of respiratory acidosis, in the majority of cases partly compensated.  相似文献
