In order to plan agricultural land in urban scientifically, it is necessary to establish the concept of urban agricultural areas, and research the basic connotation of urban agricultural areas, the spatial characteristics and geographical type. Urban agricultural area is one type of urban function region which consists of agricultural land in urban, and generally limited to the municipal districts. One idealized spatial scale of urban agricultural area is around 200 hm2, which can be well integrated into the general urban functional groups in optimal spatial form in small concentration and large distribution. The types of urban agricultural area can be characterized 5 types, as follows: urban agricultural area in urbanized area, urban agricultural area in quasi-urban areas, urban agricultural area in semi-urban areas, urban agricultural area in shallow urbanized areas, and urban agricultural area in urban ecologically sensitive areas. In a word, it is an important new task for urban planning to form the new pattern of the integration of urban and rural economic and social development, which based on the differences of the urban agriculture areas location characteristics, resource endowments and functional requirements, and on the allocation of multi-functional agriculture relying on urban and services urban rationally.
