Abstract:Embryonic stem cells(ES) can undergo extended proliferation lifespan while keep the ability of multilineage differentiation.These characteristics enable ES cell to be of great potential applications in medicine,agriculture and basic research,especially in developing novel therapy for some human diseases.It is reported that leukemia inhibitory factor(LIF) can maintain the self-renewal ability of mouse ES cell through activating Stat3.However,interestingly,LIF/Stat3 is dispensable for maintenance of ICM and human ES cell,which suggest that there might exist another path.Recently a new pluripotency-maintaining factor called Nanog was found.Nanog alone can support the self-renewal of ES cell bypassing the LIF/Stat3 pathway.The present paper reviewed mainly the discovery of Nanog,its characteristic of genome sequence and expression of coding gene-Nanog.
