Effects of marine environment variation on the growth of neon flying squid (Ommastrephes bartramii) in the north Pacific Ocean

Abstract:Marine environment variation has a profound impact on the marine organisms and their growth, especially for the short life span species. Based on 6091 samples of neon flying squid (Ommastrephes bartramii) collected from August to October in 2009 to 2012 and 2015 to 2016 in the north Pacific Ocean, the fisheries biological characteristics combined with the marine environmental factors of O. bartramii were studied. The result indicated that significant difference of fisheries biological characteristics was found between different sexes and marine environment years. The mantle length of O. bartramii was positive correlated to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation index with one-year lag. Samples in El Ni?o years were lager than those in La Ni?a years, while individuals in El Ni?o year with very strong intensity were the smallest of all. The El Ni?o event with very strong intensity caused lower sea surface temperature (SST) and Chlorophyll a (Chl. a) concentration was not beneficial to the growth and their mature of O. bartramii, while higher SST and Chl. a concentration provided favorable environment for O. bartramii with a larger body size and early maturement. The fisheries biological characteristics had significant different between different marine environment years, and the synthetic influence of PDO, El Ni?o/La Ni?a, SST and Chl. a concentration is the dominate factor that affect the growth of O. bartramii.
