Breeding of the Newly-developed Two-line Hybrid Rice Peiliangyou Yuhong

Peiliangyou Yuhong, the cross between Pei'ai 64S and Yuhong 1 (a released indica late rice variety), is a newly-developed two-line hybrid rice. It was released to farmers in February, 1997. In the 1994 and 1995 Hunan Rice Variety Regional Trials, it yielded a mean of 6.88 t/hm 2, a little lower than check Weiyou 46 (7.00 t/hm 2), but its milling yield was significantly higher than that of check Weiyou 46. When planted as late rice in double-cropping system in Hunan, it is about 97 cm tall with strong tillering ability. Its seed set is more than 85% with a mean of 120 spikelets/panicle and a 1 000-grain weight of 24 g. Its grain quality is acceptable with a high head rice rate of 68.0%, a moderate amylose content of 23.1% and a high protein content of 10.27%. The major cultural management of the combination was also briefly discussed.
