Forest Road Development in Australia

Australia is rich in forest resources and has a long history of forest road construction. The dense and developed forest roads and the forest road improvement plans ensure the sound and organized development of Australia’s forest roads and contribute to the sustainable, integrated and effective use of forest and timber resources. The paper outlines the current development of forest roads in Australia, including diversified investment and financing mechanisms under the principle of “user pays” for forest roads construction, forest road management regimes, construction planning and construction specifications. Based on the analysis of the current situation and problems of forestry road development in China, it is proposed that the construction of forest roads in China needs to change the unitary financial investment model to the diversified investment and financing channels, pay attention to the standardized forest road planning and procedures and focus on the integration of ecological, social and economic benefits.
