Abstract:The author regards it convenient to use the term "AgroforestrySystematic Engineering" to represent the practice of agroforestry in China.After a detailed introduction of intercropping practice of Paulownia and crops in China, which is the major form of systematic engineering of agroforestry, the author indicates that from the point of view of ecology, Paulownia and crops have no antagonistic contradiction with regards to utilization of light energy and to water/fertilizer supply. There are three categories of intercropping of Paulownia and crops, i. e. the intercropping with agriculture as the dominant factor, or with Paulownia as the major factor,or,a simultaneous development of Paulownia and crops. In formulating the intensive cultivation techniques and management measures, it should be emphasized to plant proper tree species in appropriate location, to dispose the crops reasonably, to select strong sprout (the standard of strong sprout) and to choose the right crop variety and the right Paulownia variety.The author also suggests to strengthen the theoretical research of agroforestry systematic engineering, and to establish stable ecological observation stations of Paulownia/crop over the agricultural areas of the Huang Huai Hai plains. It should also be encouraged to carry out biomass and productivity research. Paulownia and crop variety development by selection should be continued. The research on intensive cultivation technique for short cycle felling, and the research on Paulownia-wood processing and its synthetic utilization should also be carried out. The paper gives a short introduction of overseas present development state abd its trend.
