Researches on the Overall Benefits of Forest Management

The theory on forest overall benefits is one of the most complex and urgent problems that confront the cycle of forest science and technology. In the world some countries have had some experiences in this respect and have conducted some theoretical studies. These efforts led to some extent of progress. However, generally speaking, these researches remain at preliminary stages in trying out the theoretical validity and practical feasibility. Based on particular conditions in China, and in learning lessons from foreign countries, this paper from the view of systems theory makes an analysis of the major system of environment and society in which the forest management system is included. Considering at a high level of the coordination and sustained development of the major system of environment and society, a reestimation of the overall benefits of forest management is made. In addition to this, a basis of cognition, theoretical data, fundamental connotation and essential traits of the forest overall benefits are given. On basis of these, a metrological approach and a corresponding operating manual are proposed, in which "money" is used as a measure, with systematic cost-benefit evaluation as the fundamental method. An overall review is made of the realistic significance of this theory in the social development and forest construction in China.
