A Study of Timber Legality Verification and Its Influence on China's Woody Forest Product Trade

Illegal logging and associated trade is the important cause of deforestation and forest degradation in many developing countries. Forest deforestation in turn contributes up to 20% of global carbon emissions. Governments, the private sector and civil societies have made increasing efforts to assure the legality of timber. Accordingly, it is increasingly common to have the timber legality verification. The paper summarized the concepts of timber legality verification and major verification schemes, and then conclude the main points, limitations and enlightenments of timber legality verification. Finally, the influence of timber legality verification on China's woody forest product trade was briefly analyzed.
