Abstract:This experiment was conducted to study the effects of vitamin E on royal jelly production and larval antioxidation of Apis mellifera ligustica Spin.Fifteen cages of honey bees obtained from a local apiary were used in this study.Honey bees were randomly allocated to 3 groups with 5 replications each.The three groups were fed basic diet(supplemented with no vitamin E),vitamin E(supplemented with 360 IU·kg-1 vitamin E in basic diet),bee pollen,respectively.The results showed that: the royal jelly production and larval T-SOD activities of the group fed basic diet were significantly lower than the group fed vitamin E and the bee pollen′s group(P<0.05),while the content of MDA was significantly higher(P<0.05).There were no significant differences of the indexes above between the group fed vitamin E and the group fed bee pollen(P>0.05).These results indicated that the suitable level of vitamin E supplemented in diets can improve the royal jelly production of colony and antioxidant activities of honeybee larva.The index,such as the antioxidant activities,can be applied in the study of honeybee nutritional requirements.
