SCREEMING FOR LIPID PRODUCING FUNGI

Inverstigations on fungi producing lipic is a rather promising endeavour for applied mycologists. The filamentous fungi were taken as on objective of screening for lipid producing fungi and the preliminary results were obtained. Boty Sudan III and Sudan Black B stoained lipid globues of fungi cell were proved successful in the primary screening experiments. 419 lipid rich strains were obtained from 1858 isolates. 103 of the 419 strains displayed large and dense globules. Lipid contents for 57 strains exceed 10% , and 5 that of strains were as big as 24% to 46%. The one showing the highest lipid content was identified as belonging to Fusarium. The lipid comosition of three strains were analyzed and the results showed that triglyceride was the major fraction of fatty acids, and mostly unsaturated fatty acid, such as oleic acid, linolenic acid. The properties of these fatty acids were similar to the oil of the higher plants.
