Abstract:A study was conducted to determine the number of lactic acid Producing bacteria, Bifidobacteria and Escherichia coli in the gastrointestinal contents and associated with mucus layers of various segments (gastric, small intestine, cecum, colon and rectum) of growing pigs. Results showed that there were significant bacterial populations presenting in gastrointestinal contents and mucus layers along the whole gastrointestinal tract. Furthermore, the population of lactic acid Producing bacteria presented both in gastrointestinal contents and associated with mucus layers was significantly higher than that of Bifidobacteria or E. coli ( P <0.01). The distribution of the three groups in the contents of the whole tract was: the number of Lactic acid Producing bacteria in the hindgut contents was significantly higher than that of gastric or small intestine ( P <0.01); the populations of Bifidobacteria in the cecum contents was the greatest ( P <0.01); the concentration of E. coli in the contents of cecum and colon was higher than that of other segments ( P <0 01). The distribution of the three groups associated with the gastrointestinal mucus layers was: the populations of Lactic acid producing bacteria in colon, Bifidobacteria or E. coli in cecum and colon were significantly greater than that of other segments of gastrointestinal tract ( P <0.05). There was no significant difference of the populations between Bifidobacteria and E. coli in the gastrointestinal contents except in the rectum. The numbers of Bifidobacteria associated with the colon and rectum mucus layers were significantly higher than that of E. coli ( P <0.05).
