Abstract:To ascertain if the growth of seedling is damaged by uranium tailings stress, the hybrid rice(Peiliangyou 288) and common wheat(Xiangmai 11) (Triticum aestivum L.) seedlings were cultivated in the mixture of uranium tailings and river sands at the respective proportions of 00/100, 25/75, 50/50, 25/75, 100/00. The contents of chlorophyll and malonyldialdehyde(MDA), the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxide enzyme (POD) and catalase (CAT) were determined in rice and wheat seedlings with two leaves and one bud. The results indicated that the seed germination was not affected by uranium tailings, and the content of chlorophyll was the highest when the content of uranium tailings was 50 percent(Fig.3). In contrast, the MDA content was the lowest when the content of uranium tailings was 50 percent(Fig.4).The activities of SOD, POD and CAT were increased with the increment of uranium tailings content(Fig.5, Fig.6, Fig.7).In addition the activity of POD was increased with increment of growth days(Fig.8), too. In short, the growth of rice and wheat seedlings was affected by uranium tailings.
