Abstract:To explore the invasion potential of Mikania micrantha that is under biological control into environments with different levels of light availability, this study examined the effects of light availability (100% and 14.72% of full sunlight) and simulated herbivory (50% leaf area removal and no leaf area removal) on the leaf morphological plastic changes in M. micrantha and a comparative native species Paederia scandens. The results showed that shading significantly increased the leaf area of M. micrantha and P. scanden, and simulated herbivory decreased the leaf area and weight of M. micrantha but not those of P. scanden. Shading nearly doubled the specific leaf area of M. micrantha and P. scanden, indicating that M. micrantha and P. scanden are all plastic in response to light availability. Simulated herbivory did not reduce the expression of this plasticity. This study suggests that although natural enemy introduction could reduce the growth of M. micrantha, M. micrantha may remain its invasion potential into environments with diverse light levels through adjusting its leaf morphological traits.
