Abstract:Pyrethroids, with both insecticidal and repellent activities, have been widely used in mosquito coils and other mosquito-repellent products. However, the repellent mechanism of pyrethroid remains unknown. In this study, two volatile pyrethroids, dimefluthrin and meperfluthrin, induced spatial (non-contact) repellency in Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus in a hand-in-cage assay. Electroantennography (EAG) recordings showed that, except dimefluthrin, other pyrethroids did not elicit EAG responses from adult antennae. Furthermore, the repellency of dimefluthrin and meperfluthrin was weaker against pyrethroid-resistant population of Aedes aegypti (Puerto Rican) carrying kdr mutations on sodium channels than against the susceptible population. Our results suggest that activation of olfactory system is not responsible for pyrethroid repellency in mosquitoes, maybe other factors, such as sodium channels, contribute to pyrethroid repellency.
