STUDIES ON THE OCCURRENCE AND INTEGRATED CONTROL OF THE RICE GALL MIDGE

In early 1950s,Orseolia oryzae Wood-Mason was rampant intermit-tently in some mountain areas and hill lands in Guangdong Province.Asthe double cropping rice system became popular throughout the prov-ince from middle 1950s to 1960s,the damage of this insect decreasedobviously.However,the damage was inverted to an outbreak situationsince 1970s,as the late-maturing varieties and late-transplanting ofearly rice,the triple-cropping system or mid-season rice,heel-in seedlingand longer transplanting period,which provided favourable conditionsfor multiplication and transmission of this insect,were adopted. The occurrence and damage of this insect have overcome effectivelysince a series of integrated control methods such as double croppingrice system was resumed in whole province,to use early-middle maturingvarieties of early rice,the application of effective insecticides such asquinalphos,chlorpyrifos,sulfotep,isocarbophos,carbofuran,etc.,andthe control in late-rice nursery,were realized.
