Abstract:Proline is widely distributed in plant as protection material.Many plants accumulate free Pro, which is anorganic osmolyte, in response to abiotic stresses of low temperature.The accumulation of Pro may function in preventing plants from being damaged caused by osmotic stress, protecting protein, scavenging oxidative free radicals, acting as the important source of nitrogen and carbon after the stress has dissipated.This paper gives a general statement about that, under the low temperature stress the metabolism adjustment of Pro, the accumulation of Pro to be a cold resistance indicator, the advances in improving the cold tolerance of plants using the genetic transformation of genes involved in Pro metabolism, and the application about analogues of Pro in the plant breeding for cold resistance.
