Abstract:The past decade has seen a growing spread of the alien invasive cotton mealybug Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley over large areas in China.Biological control by native natural enemies provides an alternative to the management of this pest.This study aimed to evaluate if the mealybug provides an alternative prey food for the harlequin lady beetle Harmonia axyridis(Pallas).The mealybug was fed alone or together with the bean aphid Megoura japonica(Matsumura)to neonate lady beetles with consuming the aphid alone as the control.Lady beetles were observed for developmental and reproductive performances under the diet treatment.The results showed that the diet treatment influenced larva-to-adulthood mortality which decreased to 27.01%(n=85)on the mealybug from 42.86%(n=112)on the aphid and 41.07%(n=112)on the mixed diet;such differences in mortality resulted from the first instar stage of the lady beetle.The diet treatment affected lady beetle’s larval development time,which reduced to 9.46 d on the mealybug from 10.09 d on the aphid and 10.78 d on the mixed diet.The diet treatment influenced the fecundity,which increased to 553 eggs in 20 days on the mealybug from 332 on the aphid and 330 eggs on the mixed.Our results suggest that P.solenopsis is high quality food for H.axyridis development and reproduction.
