Courtyard Forestry: An Important Form of Agroforestry System

Courtyard forestry, an advanced form of Agroforestry system, occupies strategic position in rural development. The paper presents its development in some Third World countries with the emphasis on some successful cases in the countrysides of Southern China. For example, there is a peasant household in Dongping Township, Yongshun County,Hunan Province,China, whose income from courtyard forestry makes up 42 percent of his total family incomes on an area of only 2 mu(0.13ha.). According to another investigation of 111 peasant households in Shiwan District of Hengdong County, with the mean courtyard area of 2.57 mu, 9.64 m³ of wood were harvested and 23541.5kg of forest products were produced each household on the average at the end of 1985. The commodity rate amounts for 82.27 per cent. The author also points out the major existing problems and the countermeasures to be taken.
