A NEW SPECIES OF LEPTOGOMPHUS SELYS FROM HAINAN ISLAND (ODONATA: GOMPHTDAE)

In a small but interesting collection of dragonflies collected from Hainan Island turned over to the author for identification by Prof. Hua Li-zhong of the Biology Department of Zhongshan University, a new species has been found. It is herein described. Leptogomphus hainanensis Chao, sp. nov. ♂. Length of abdomen 40 mm., HW 33 mm. The present new species is similar to L. sauteri formosanus(Oguma)(Taiwan) and L. elegans Lieftinck(Fujian) in the shape of the penis. However, it differs from both of them in that the dorsal portion of the distal segment of the penis, which is perpendicular to the middle segment, is conical and more pointed(Fig. 6) instead of round. It can further be differentiated from them by the structure of the inferior anal appendage. In the present new species, the two branches of the inferior anal appendage are slightly divaricated(Fig.4) instead of parallel to each other as in sauteri formosanus nor curving mesad as in elegans. This new species differs from all other members of the genus in that the apex of the superior anal appendage is squarely truncated(Figs. 1-3) instead of obliquely truncated. 1♂, holotype, 1982.vii.29, Zhang Sheng leg; 1♂, paratype, 1982. wii.8. He Chong-bin leg., both collected from Jian-Feng-Lin, Hainan Is., Guangdong province. The holotype is deposited in the Insect Collection of the Biology Department of Zhongshan University, Guangzhou, and the paratype is preserved in the Institute of Biological Control of Fujian Agricultural College, IBC Type Cat. No. 019.
