Pathogenesis and pathology of the cerebello-vestibular syndrome

The cerebella-vestibular syndrome is arbitrarily divided into diseases of the cerebellum and those of the vestibular apparatus. Clinical signs of cerebellar and vestibular derangement are described together with the pathology and pathogenesis of some of the more common disease conditions. Included in these are the virus-induced cerebellar hypoplasias, infection of the peripheral labyrinth, (a) from the outer ear and (b) by way of the Eustachian tube, and damage to the peripheral labyrinth by haemorrhage and tumours. An account is given of degenerative changes in the vestibular nuclei in the brain by space-occupying lesions, drugs and by encephalitis. Special mention is made of the syndrome seen in the older dog in which vestibular signs, blindness and lethargy are associated with disseminated encephalitis. Résumé. Le syndrome cerébello-vestibulaire est divisé arbitrairement en affections du cervelet et celles de l'appareil vestibulaire. Les signes des maladies cerébellaires et vestibulaires sont décrits, ainsi que l'anatomie pathologique et la pathogénie de certains états pathologiques communs. On y range les hypoplasies cerébelleuses d'origine virale, les infections du labyrinthe périphérique: (a) venant de l'oreille externe et (b) provenant de la trompe d'Eustache, ainsi que les lésions du labyrinthe périphérique dues à des hémorragies et à des tumeurs. On mentionne les lésions dégénératives des noyaux vestibulaires, du cervelet provoquées par des tumeurs, des médicaments et l'encéphalite. Une mention particulière est faite au syndrome observé chez le chien âgé, chez lequel les signes vestibulaires, la cécité et la léthargie sont dues à une encéphalite disséminée. Zusammenfassung. Das cerebello-vestibulare Syndrom wird in Erkrankungen des Cerebellum und in solche des Vestibularapparates eingeteilt. Klinische Merkmale cerebellarer und vestibularer Störung werden zusammen mit der Pathologie und Pathogenese einiger der häufigeren Krank-heitszustände beschrieben. Zu diesen gehören die virusbedingten cerebellaren Hypoplasien, Infektionen des peripheren Labyrinths (a) ausgehend vom Aussenohr und (b) durch die Ohrtrompete, und Schäden am peripheren Labyrinth durch Blutungen und Tumoren. Es wird über degenerative Veränderungen in den Nuclei vestibularis im Gehirn durch raumbeanspru-chende Läsionen, Medikamente und Encephalitis berichtet. Besonders erwähnt wird das am älteren Hund zu beobachtende Syndrom, bei dem vestibulare Symptome, Blindheit und Lethargie mit disseminierter Encephalitis verbunden sind.
