Abstract:Peripheral plasma concentrations of oestrone sulphate and progesterone were measured in three ewes and seven cows/heifers after induced fetal death and abortion following infection of the amniotic sac with bacteria. Progesterone concentrations decreased rapidly in both species and were near zero at the time of abortion. In five cows oestrone sulphate concentrations remained elevated for several days after abortion. It is speculated that this might be due to placental storage and secretion after fetal death has occurred.
