TRENDS OF RESEARCH ON TERPENOID GLYCOSIDES

Glycosides are present in the constituents of metabolites of animals, plants and microbes playing important roles in manifestation, alteration and termination of various physiological activities , as well as affecting solubility, stability, absorption, metabolism, detoxication and excretion. Structures, sources, physiological activities, uses and demands of mono-, sesqui-, di- and triterpenoid glycosides are introduced in this paper. As the high-speed liquid chromatography shows increasingly better performance and its separation capability has become close to that of high resolution gas chromatography, it is highly anticipated that the separation of terpene glycosides becomes easier and various kinds of their useful physiological activities can be clarified. In combination with the established synthetic methods of terpenoids,a rapid progress is expected to be made in the fields of terpene glycosides in the coming decade.
