Rattan Canes are mainly distributed in the tropical forests, with limited distribution in temperate forests. They are widely used to decorate houses and offices with elegant, attractive furniture. Their attraction and durability is mainly responsible for its immense demand resulting in overexploitation, reduced productivity and gradual disappearance from accessible areas. Many species have reached such low numbers, that they may not be able to naturally regenerate themselves further. Rattan is facing the challenges of fire, shifting cultivation, over-exploitation, shrinking forests, dwarfism/prolonged rosette stage, etc.
