Abstract:The influence of eight exotic cotton cytolasms on yield, yield components, fiber properties, and insect resistance was determined in 1987--1989. The eight cytoplasms were Gossypium herbaoeum (A1), G. arboreum(A2), G. anomalum (B1), G. longicalyx(F1), G. harknessii(D2--2), G. barbadense (AD2), G. hirsutum subsp, mexicanum (AD1),and G. hirsutum suture subsp. purpurascens (AD1). When transferred into upland cotton backgrounds, the exotic cytoplasms in general tended to decrease lint yield. Cytoplasms from A2 and D2--2 had the greatest effect on cotton yield loss. The D2--2 cytoplasm also caused the reduction of lint index, lint percent and boll size. The other foreign cytoplasms had no strong deleterious effects on yield components, fiber properties and resistance to pink bollworm (Pectinophora gossypiella) and spider mites (Tetranychus cinnabarinus).
