Application of Computer Vision to Scientific Research and Production in Wood Industry

Computer vision is a kind of modern measurement technology,which has been applied widely in medical diagnosis remote sensing,astronomy,meteorological observation,aerosurveying,archaeology and nuclear physics.Computer vision integrates image analysis,pattern recognition and computer techniques.It is noted for high measuring speed,automatic pattern recognition,high measuring accuracy,and low environmental requirements.This paper discusses the application of computer vision technology in wood industry,introduces the content of researches and construction of the measurement system of computer vision,summarizes the application method and achievement in wood science,wood surface roughness scanning,pulping,papermaking,artificial boardmaking wood conversion and wood-preservation.In wood science,computer vision does automatic image analysis,and derives information from images with minimal operating effort.Such techniques prove useful to investigation techniques that require processing large amounts of data(e.g.fiber length,growth rate,proportion of latewood and cellular dimension measurements).In quality control,computer vision can measure the sizing parts,and detect defects.In pulping and papermaking,it can measure'fiber geometry and shape,and dirt in paper.In plywood,it can measure the percent wood failure,and check the depth and frequency of wood failure.Computer vision is a new technique in measuring and has a bright future in the field of wood industry measurement.
