Cannibalism has been described in 390 teleost fish species belonging to 104 families. In rearing conditions, intra‐cohort cannibalism is one of the major bottlenecks during the early life stages of pikeperch (Sander lucioperca). This study aims to describe precisely the occurrence and the onset of cannibalism of this species during the first two post‐hatching months. In a first step, the cannibalistic behaviour was analysed through observations in three experiments. In each experiment, the number of cannibalistic cases was similar. From 14 to 48 days post‐hatching (dph), more than 60 % of prey ingestions were realized by tail‐first, but after 48 dph, the number of prey ingestions by head‐first increased. In a second step, the behavioural sequence exhibited to attack and to capture a conspecific was analysed, taking into account the size ratio between the cannibal and its prey. The behavioural sequence to capture was always the same, similar to a predatory sequence and it seems that the cannibal chose its prey about 10 s before attacking. Moreover, prey choice by a cannibal was based more on the size ratio between the cannibal and its prey than the previous activity of the potential prey. These new results could lead to solutions to decrease cannibalism in pikeperch rearing.  相似文献

Despite the abundant literature on circadian heart rate rhythms in fish, few studies have attempted to elucidate if such pattern is endogenous or if it is modulated by environmental cues. In this study, heart rates were continuously recorded in Sparus aurata acclimated to different light regimes (normal or shifted LD 12:12 cycle and a pulsed 0.75:0.75 LD cycle) to investigate the endogenous nature and the role of light on the circadian pattern of heart rate. Under LD 12:12, the daily pattern of heart rate showed higher values at night and lower rates during the day (average amplitude of the heart rate change of 10.6 ± 5.7 beats min–1). The circadian pattern was maintained in animals under constant light but the amplitude was decreased (2.4 ± 1.1 beats min–1). Light masks the expression of the rhythm because under a pulsed LD cycle, heart rate tracks the pulsed LD phases, increasing during the dark phase and decreasing during the light phase. Besides the ultradian pattern imposed, an underlying circadian rhythm was detected, which indicates that the rhythm is endogenous. However, the strong link between heart rate and light obtained under pulsed LD cycles suggest the timing mechanism to be mostly based on external light reception.  相似文献

The mRNA expression of the LH- and FSH- subunits were measured in nesting and post-breeding male three-spined sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculetaus, as well as in castrated and sham-operated nesting males. Furthermore, expression of an androgen induced kidney protein, spiggin, and 11-ketotestosterone (11KT) levels, were measured in the castrated and sham-operated males. Nesting males had significantly higher levels of both LH- and FSH- mRNA expression compared to post-breeding males. Furthermore, sham-operated males had significantly higher levels of LH- mRNA and spiggin mRNA expression than the castrated fish. Expression of FSH-, on the other hand, did not differ between castrated and sham-operated males. There were strong positive individual correlations between circulating levels of 11KT on the one hand and expressions of LH- and spiggin mRNA, whereas the correlation between 11KT levels and FSH- mRNA was weak. The negative effect of castration on -LH mRNA indicates that gonadal hormones stimulate this expression, whereas this was not the case for -FSH. The observed decline in -LH expression after the end of the breeding season may be the result of cessation of the gonadal stimulation of the pituitary. On the other hand, it is not likely that this can explain the decline in FSH- expression.  相似文献

We have studied the seasonal relationship between growth and circulating growth hormone (GH), hepatic GH-binding and plasma insulin-like growth factor-I immunoreactivity in gilthead sea bream,Sparus aurata. The seasonal increase in plasma GH levels preceded by several weeks the summer increase in growth rates. In contrast, a marked increase in hepatic GH-binding with a high degree of endogenous GH occupancy was found during the period of maximum growth which suggests an enhanced sensitivity of liver to GH action. Thus, circulating levels of immunoreactive IGF-I, probably derived from the liver in response to GH action, were positively correlated with growth throughout the experimental period although a consistent relationship between growth and circulating GH was not found. In spite of this, we consider that, in gilthead sea bream, as in several other teleosts, the availability of endogenous GH can limit growth. Thus, under environmental conditions of suboptimal growth, a single intraperitoneal injection of recombinant rainbow trout GH (rtGH) induced over the dose range tested (0.75, 1.5, 3 μg g BW−1) an increase in plasma IGF-I-like immunoreactivity comparable to that seen during the period of maximum growth.  相似文献

In fish, sex steroids initiate and/or accelerate the maturation of the brain-pituitary-gonad axis. In order to obtain information on the steroid milieu during the pubertal development of male African catfish, we have monitored the conversion of [3H]-pregnenolone and [3H]-androstenedione by testis and [3H]-pregnenolone by interrenal tissue fragmentsin vitro. Pubertal development occurs between two and six months of age. Testicular development proceeds through four main stages that are characterised histologically by the presence of spermatogonia (stage I), spermatogonia and spermatocytes (stage II), spermatogonia, spermatocytes and spermatids (stage III), and all germ cells including spermatozoa (stage IV). 11β-Hydroxyandrostenedione and cortisol were the main products of testes and interrenal tissue, respectively, in all stages of the pubertal development; a change in the steroidogenic pattern was not observed during this period. The interrenal tissue displayed no significant conversion of [3H]-pregnenolone to 11-oxygenated androgens. Blood plasma was analyzed for the presence of five androgens; testosterone, 11β-hydroxytestosterone, 11β-hydroxyandrostenedione, androstenetrione, and 11-ketotestosterone. 11-Ketotestosterone was the quantitatively dominating androgen in the circulation at all stages of development, which was more pronounced in stages III and IV. The obvious differences between thein vitro andin vivo results, namely 11β-hydroxyandrostenedione being the main testicular productvs. 11-ketotestosterone dominating in the blood, may indicate that 11β-hydroxyandrostenedione is converted to 11-ketotestosterone at extratesticular sites.  相似文献

Vitellogenin (Vtg) was purified from the plasma of 17-estradiol (E2)-injected male greenback flounder,Rhombosolea tapirina. The molecular weight of the native Vtg was estimated by gel filtration as 540 kD. SDS-PAGE and Western blotting analyses indicated that this protein consisted of three bands with molecular weights of 155, 104, 79 kD, respectively. A polyclonal antibody against the highest molecular weight band of putative Vtg was generated in sheep and an indirect antibody-capture competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed. The assay was validatedfor plasma Vtg measurement in greenback flounder. Serial dilutions of plasma from vitellogenic females parallelled the standard Vtg curve, whereas no cross-reaction was observed with the plasma of males in the ELISA. The Vtg ELISA was used to assess the induction of Vtg by E2 in vivo in males. The induction of Vtg in greenback flounder showed a time- and dose-dependent response as in other species. In E2-treated fish, detectable levels of Vtg were first found at 48 h, and reached a peak at 96 h post-injection. Plasma levels of Vtg increased as the E2 dose increased with a threshold of 0.1 mg kg–1.  相似文献

Male goldeye were treated with (D-Ala6, Pro9-N ethylamide) — LHRH (LHRH-A) in saline or a silastic pellet (100 µg.kg–1 body weight) and changes in plasma gonadotropin (GtH), 17,20-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,20P) and testosterone (T) levels were determined by radioimmunoassay. LHRH-A increased plasma GtH levels, with the response to LHRH-A in saline being of much greater magnitude and duration than the response to silastic pellet implants. Seasonal differences were found in the response to LHRH-A. Spermiated fish were the most responsive, recrudescing fish the least, and regressed fish displayed an intermediate response. Plasma 17,20P levels were elevated in response to LHRHA in fish of all sexual stages although the magnitude of the increase was not related to the magnitude of the increase in GtH levels. Treatment with LHRH-A also resulted in a transitory increase in plasma T levels. The endocrine control of GtH and steroid secretion in goldeye is discussed in relation to studies in cyprinids and salmonids. The distribution of immunoreactive GnRH was studied in the brain and pituitary gland of normal and human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) injected silver eels. It was found that the general organization of GnRH systems in this species is similar to that reported in other teleosts. Cell bodies were present in the olfactory bulbs, ventral telencephalon, periventricular hypothalamus and dorsal tegmentum. No positive perikarya could be detected in the preoptic region. Only scarce fibers were observed in the proximal neurohypophysis. Treatment with hCG does not modify the distribution of GnRH but it increases the density of positive structures, in particular at the level of the pituitary. The results are discussed in relation with the present status of knowledge of the mechanisms underlying the blockage of sexual maturation in the European eel at the silver stage.  相似文献

Ovarian steroidogenesis during final oocyte maturation (FOM) in the spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus) was investigated by incubating ovarian fragments with tritiated pregnenolone, followed by chromatographic separation of the radioactive products. The major tritiated steroid produced during FOM comigrated with 17α,20β,21-trihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (20β-dihydro-11-deoxycortisol, 20β-S) on HPLC and TLC. Only minor amounts of radioactive material coeluted with 17α,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17α,20β-P), 11-deoxycorticosterone (DOC), estradiol-17β and testosterone standards in the HPLC system. Additional chromatography by TLC confirmed the presence of radioactive estradiol-17β and testosterone but not 17α,20β-P and DOC. All the ovarian steroids producedin vitro during FOM were assayed for their ability to induce germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) of spotted seatrout oocytes. Twenty grams of ovarian tissue were incubated with human chorionic gonadotropin and exogenous pregnenolone. The steroidal products were purified by HPLC and TLC. Most of the maturation-inducing activity was confined to steroidal material which comigrated in these systems with 20β-S. This material was active at a concentration of 1 ng steroid/ml medium in the GVBD assay. Smaller amounts of material which coeluted with 11-deoxycortisol, DOC, 17α,20β-P and several minor unidentified fractions induced GVBD at concentrations of 10 ng steroid(s)/ml. The structure-activity relationships of authentic steroids in inducing GVBD of spotted seatrout oocytes was investigated. Hydroxylation at the 17α, 20β or 21 positions increased potency to induce GVBD. Steroids with multiple hydroxyl groups at the 17α and 20β positions (17α, 20β-P) and at the 17α, 20β, and 21 positions (20β-S) had maximum biological activity in the GVBD bioassay. The results suggest that 20β-S is a major maturation-inducing steroid in spotted seatrout.  相似文献

The effects of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), substance P (SP), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), neurotensin (NT) and met-enkephalin (mEnk) on the smooth muscles of the teleost swimbladder were studied in two teleost species, the Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and the eel (Anguilla anguilla). The study was made on isolated strip preparations of the muscularis mucosae, using putative transmitters corresponding to the immunoreactive materials that have previously been localized by immunohistochemical methods in nerves or endocrine/paracrine cells of the teleost swimbladder and/or the gastrointestinal canal. VIP was relaxatory on both cod and eel swimbladder smooth muscle, SP and 5-HT were constrictory in both species, and mEnk was excitatory on the eel swimbladder smooth muscle. Clear effects of these agents were usually seen at a concentration ofca. 10 nM in cumulative concentration/effect experiments. NT had no effect in either species. In the eel, the effects on the pneumatic duct were generally greater than on the swimbladder proper. The study indicates that the 5-HT and peptides previously observed by immunohistochemistry have physiological functions in the swimbladder.  相似文献
