  1. The implementation of marine protected areas (MPAs) has been widely used as a tool to manage and conserve marine resources and services. Yet, to date, the reserve effect is still weakly evaluated, particularly for soft-sediment habitats.
  2. The Arrábida MPA, considered as a biodiversity hotspot, was fully established in 2009 on the west coast of Portugal and is characterized by large expanses of soft-sediment habitats. This MPA was established to protect biodiversity and to ensure the livelihood of the local small-scale fisheries community.
  3. Beyond before–after-control–impact (BACI) analyses were carried out on catch data (abundance and biomass) of 351 trammel net sets from experimental fishing campaigns (2007–2019) to study the reserve effect on demersal fish populations.
  4. The results show a declining trend in abundance inside and outside the protected area, with significant positive effects only found for undersize commercial species and Solea senegalensis, and a general increase in fish species total length. Despite the lack of any obvious reserve effect, the increase in fish length can be considered as a first sign.
  5. Anthropogenic pressures are generalized around the area, and transgressions of the restrictions are frequently observed inside the no-take zone. These can, among other aspects, delay or prevent the expected reserve effects. Therefore, enforcement and/or modification of the spatial plan must be incentivized to achieve the goals of the MPA.

Due to the growing awareness of potential impacts of roads, managers demand well-designed studies about the implications of linear infrastructures on ecosystems. We illustrate the application of Before–During–After and Before–During–After-Control–Impact designs (BDA and BDACI) to assess effects of highway construction and operation using a population of great bustards (Otis tarda) as a model. Based on a time series of demographic and distribution data (1997–2009), we developed generalized additive models and classification trees to test the effect of road distance on bustard distribution, identify road-effect distances and explore the seasonality of these effects. Two control zones were selected to test the changes between construction phases on productivity, and population trends using TRIM models. From the start of the road construction, great bustards tended to avoid close proximity to the highway (ca. 560–750 m threshold distance). The exclusion band was narrower during the breeding season. In addition, family groups were less tolerant to highway operation disturbances, as shown by their higher distance effect (ca. 1300 m). Population trends did not differ between impact and control zones during the construction. However, once the highway was in operation, bustard numbers declined gradually up to 50% in the impact zone, remained stable in the closest control zone, and increased in the zone located at the greatest distance from the highway. The effects on density of family groups were less evident. Our approach provides information relevant to great bustard conservation and suggests methods for obtaining information of interest to road managers, that could be applied to linear infrastructures with others species.  相似文献

The benefits of protection of a small (4.3 km2) marine protected area (MPA) for Senegalese sole, Solea senegalensis, were investigated through experimental fishing trials and long‐term (up to 293 days) passive acoustic telemetry. A total of 106 trammel net sets were carried out between 2007 and 2011. Significant differences in abundance and biomass of sole between bottom types/depths (sandy bottoms between 12 and 20 m deep vs muddy bottoms between 35 and 45 m deep) were found, but no significant differences were attributable to the implementation of the no‐take area. Passive acoustic telemetry revealed that most Senegalese sole spent a large part of their time between first and last detections (average residency index = 69%) inside a relatively small area (average 95% = 1.2 km2), during which they preferred sandy bottoms, the most common habitat inside the MPA. Results also demonstrated that Senegalese sole do regular excursions beyond reserve boundaries, eventually emigrating from the MPA. The results suggest that small coastal MPAs providing adequate habitat may protect individuals of this species while allowing for moderate levels of adult spillover to neighbouring areas.  相似文献

The impacts on bird assemblages of silvicultural alternatives to clearfelling in lowland wet eucalypt forest were studied over a decade at Warra, Tasmania. Using a multiple-visit point-count procedure and a before-after-control-impact design, indices of relative incidence were derived for the 44 bird species recorded at 177 survey-points, and used in both univariate and multivariate analyses. The majority of species had strong associations with either mature forest or young regeneration post-harvest, with very few more generalist species present. Bird assemblages in the unharvested mature forest were not static over this period, but this could not readily be explained by the expansion of forest harvesting in the surrounding landscape. However, the shift was subtle compared to the responses to harvesting, which induced a fundamental change in assemblage composition irrespective of the silvicultural system applied. The ability of the different systems to retain elements of the original mature forest avifauna varied markedly. Dispersed retention silviculture was no better than clearfelling, with or without unharvested understorey islands in the latter system. By contrast, both the unharvested parts of coupes subjected to stripfelling, and the retained aggregates in coupes subjected to aggregated retention silviculture, maintained mature forest bird assemblages. The long-term value of stripfelling for mature forest avifauna is compromised because the unharvested strips will be harvested mid-rotation. Aggregated retention silviculture, however, is designed for long-term retention of mature forest in aggregates, and our results suggest that this system may offer a means of sustaining mature forest bird assemblages at the coupe-level. However, individual mature forest species varied in their degree of tolerance, and we suggest that no system is completely resilient to harvesting effects.  相似文献

Mining is a human activity with considerable environmental impact. To evaluate such impacts, international laws require undertaking local studies based on direct sampling to establish baseline conditions of parameters modified by human activities. Mining takes place near the Alto Tajo Natural Park, where a suspended sediment concentration (SSC) baseline is required to determine whether mining affects water quality. To this end, we have monitored the Tajo River and its tributary the Tajuelo following Before–After Control‐Impact (BACI) techniques, recommended by Australian and New Zealand laws, requiring a specific method based on continuous monitoring and sampling to enable evaluation of SSCs. An SSC baseline has been defined at stations situated upstream of the mining area and compared with those downstream. The highest detected SSC upstream of the Tajuelo mines was 24 g l−1 whereas the highest simultaneous downstream value was 391 g l−1, more than one order of magnitude higher than the supposed baseline (24 g l−1). Additionally, this value is 1000 times more than the average concentration of 25 mg l−1, used by the European Union until 2015, to guarantee the quality of salmonid waters. Following a BACI approach, a statistically significant SSC impact has been identified. The mined areas are the only source that can explain this increase. This is the first instance that such an increase and baseline have been found using this method. BACI is a simple and reliable method recommended for studying degraded areas rather than an irrelevant, fixed standard as included in most international laws. Impacts of forestry have been described in many studies, with a strong focus on changes in run-off water quality. Biological responses to forest drainage and the efficiency of commonly used water protection methods remain largely unknown, however. We used a six-year replicated before-after-control-impact (BACI) field experiment to assess the effects of forest drainage improvement works (ditch cleaning; digging of supplementary ditches) on water chemistry, sedimentation, brown trout egg mortality and macroinvertebrate community composition in six headwater streams in Northern Finland. Standard water protection methods (ditch break combined with sedimentation pit) were used to reduce fine sediment (<1.0 mm) loading into the streams. Six artificial spawning sites were constructed in each stream, three downstream (treatments) and three upstream (controls) of the drainage areas. Sediment loading did not increase after forest drainage, and no changes were detected in water quality. Brown trout egg mortality rate increased after drainage works, but more so in the upstream controls than downstream treatment sections, and only in smaller (watershed <6.25 km2) streams. All macroinvertebrate metrics (e.g. total macroinvertebrate diversity and density) decreased significantly through time. However, these responses were observed in both control and treatment sections, and could not have been caused by the drainage works directly but were rather related to inter-annual variability in precipitation and discharges. Our results thus highlight the importance of placing results from local monitoring studies in a regional context.  相似文献

Exotic predators can have detrimental impacts on indigenous fauna. Lethal predator control is commonly used to reduce predator impacts, but is not always feasible, effective or ethical. A promising non-lethal alternative is refuge supplementation for prey. We conducted a Before-After Control-Impact (BACI) experiment over 3 years to determine the relative effects of predator removal (by exclosure fencing) and artificial refuge supplementation on survival of McCann’s skink (Oligosoma maccanni) in duneland on Kaitorete Spit (South Island, New Zealand). Skink populations on 0.0625 ha-grids were randomly assigned to four treatment groups, each replicated four times: (a) predator exclosure only; (b) artificial retreats only; (c) exclosure + artificial retreats, and (d) control (no exclosure or artificial retreats), and monitored annually by pitfall trapping. Capture-recapture analysis was used to estimate the difference in annual survival probability between pre- and post-treatment periods. On average, survival increased only at grids that received the exclosure-only treatment (effect size of 0.03 (0.017-0.043; unconditional 95% CI)). Reduction in predator abundance (by lethal predator control or predator exclusion), but not artificial refuge supplementation, is predicted to benefit McCann’s skink. Our findings add to other studies highlighting the detrimental impacts of exotic predators on indigenous prey and calls for improved means of reducing predator impacts.  相似文献

A multiple Before-After-Control-Impact experiment was conducted to estimate the large scale effects of a single coverage by prawn trawlers on an offshore inter-reef area in the northern Great Barrier Reef that was closed to fishing. Prospective power and cost-benefit analyses facilitated the design and optimization of the experiment, the effect size of which was guided by prior publications at the time that had indicated impacts of 10–100×. The optimal design, given the number of factors to be tested and the constraint of available ship time (100 days) and resources needed to process samples, was for 12 control and 12 impact plots each measuring 2.8 km × 1.2 km. The final design specification was capable of detecting an average −80% effect size (5×). The experiment was divided over two seasons, wet and dry. During the experimental trawl impact phase, a total of 32 t of benthic biota was removed from six shallow plots (15–25 m depth) and 6 t from six deep plots (30–50 m depth). Sampling before and 6 months after impact was conducted by an epibenthic dredge, a prawn trawl and a fish trawl. Analysis of means before and after impact, relative to controls, showed very few significant differences. This indicated that the impact of a single prawn trawl was less than the design specification. The lower than expected impact, compared to previous studies, may have been partly because this study included all benthic groups, not just the most sensitive as earlier studies had focussed on. Comparison of catch rates from the prawn trawl and the dredge indicated the overall impact on total biomass was around −3% but ranged from close to 0% for some species to around −20% for sensitive sessile species. A review of effect sizes in 30 other recent trawl experiments indicated that this result was not exceptional; i.e. the reported effects of single trawls generally were not large, and prawn trawls appeared to have smaller effect sizes than fish trawls, beam trawls and scallop dredges—also, several studies reported recovery within ca. 6 months. Analysis of fishery effort data indicated that this result was appropriate for the majority of trawl fishing grounds, where effort is sparse and infrequent. Many published experiments had confounded designs and most had not used a priori power analyses or pre-specified effect sizes. Nevertheless, recurrent trawling can be expected to have cumulative impacts on benthos, as has been demonstrated by repeat-trawl depletion experiments. On the other hand, the spatial extent of fishing grounds trawled as intensively as these depletion experiments is quite limited.  相似文献

  • 1. The existence of perceived ecological impacts and development of adaptive management solutions to mitigate these problems are important issues in sustainable aquaculture. This paper examines the general impacts of two newly established trial longline installations on the infauna in Twofold Bay, a large, coastal embayment in south‐east Australia.
  • 2. We hypothesized that the physical presence of these longline installations and the biological activities of the mussels they supported would result in temporal changes in densities of infaunal taxa below installations differing from those at undisturbed control sites. We also predicted different patterns of variability in infauna between longline and control sites from before to after the longlines were stocked. These hypotheses were tested by using a beyond‐BACI sampling design and asymmetrical analyses of variance to compare changes in densities of taxa at several different spatial scales below the proposed longline sites with those at two adjacent control sites, before and after the longlines were stocked.
  • 3. After 18 months of longline operations, there was no evidence of any impact on total number of taxa, nor densities of individual taxa. Short‐term temporal trends in densities in plots at control sites from April to May 2001 were often as different from each other as from those at the longline site. This indicates that densities of taxa at the farm site were within the range typically found at undisturbed sites, so there were no ecological impacts from the farm.
  • 4. These results do not concur with previous studies on impact of mussel farming in semi‐enclosed coastal waters. Differences in location, scale of production, duration of operation and assimilative capacity of the environment probably contributed to this discrepancy. The infauna in Twofold Bay either do not respond to this form of disturbance or have not yet been exposed to disturbance of a sufficient magnitude, or for a sufficient period of time, to elicit a detectable response. Better definition of the potential ecological impacts associated with aquaculture, plus their scale and magnitude in different environments is needed to design experiments and monitoring programmes to detect specific impacts. This activity can only be considered sustainable once we know that these impacts are localized, reversible and short‐term.
