From October 2001 to February 2002, the faecal samples of 305 reptiles (165 saurians, 99 ophidians and 41 chelonians) were bacteriologically examined to detect Salmonella enterica. S. enterica was isolated from 73 (23.93%) faecal samples including 44 (60.27%) samples collected from saurians, 15 (20.55%) from chelonians and 14 (19.18%) from ophidians; considering the number of samples taken for each reptile group, S. enterica was isolated from the 36.58% of chelonians, 26.66% of saurians and 14.14% of ophidians. The isolates were distributed among 38 serotypes. Sixty-nine (94.52%) isolates were resistant to erythromycin. About one-third of the isolates was resistant to sulfisoxazole (35.61%), gentamycin (32.88%), amoxycillin (31.51%) and ampicillin (27.40%). All but one of the isolates were sensitive to chloramphenicol. A high percentages of isolates were sensitive to enrofloxacin (84.93%), nitrofurantoin (80.82%), trimethoprim (76.71%) and tetracycline (75.34%). 相似文献

We compared the effects of three fuel reduction techniques and a control on the relative abundance and richness of reptiles and amphibians using drift fence arrays with pitfall and funnel traps. Three replicate blocks were established at the Green River Game Land, Polk County, North Carolina. Each replicate block contained four experimental units that were each approximately 14 ha in size. Treatments were prescribed burn (B); mechanical understory reduction (M); mechanical + burn (MB); and controls (C). Mechanical treatments were conducted in winter 2001–2002, and prescribed burns in March 2003. Hot fires in MB killed about 25% of the trees, increasing canopy openness relative to controls. Leaf litter depth was reduced in B and MB after burning, but increased in M due to the addition of dead leaves during understory felling. The pre-treatment trapping period was short (15 August–10 October 2001) but established a baseline for post-treatment comparison. Post-treatment (2002–2004), traps were open nearly continuously May–September. We captured a total of 1308 species of 13 amphibians, and 335 reptiles of 13 species. The relative abundance of total salamanders, common salamander species, and total amphibians was not changed by the fuel reduction treatments. Total frogs and toads (anurans) and Bufo americanus were most abundant in B and MB; however, the proximity of breeding sites likely affected our results. Total reptile abundance and Sceloporus undulatus abundance were highest in MB after burning, but differed significantly only from B. Mean lizard abundance in MB was highest in 2004 and higher than in other treatments, but differences were not statistically significant. Our results indicate that a single application of the fuel reduction methods studied will not negatively affect amphibian or reptile abundance or diversity in southern Appalachian upland hardwood forest. Our study further suggests that high-intensity burning with heavy tree-kill, as in MB, can be used as a management tool to increase reptile abundance – particularly lizards – with no negative impact on amphibians, at least in the short-term. 相似文献

Modelling the impact of agricultural abandonment and wildfires on vertebrate diversity in Mediterranean Europe 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Agricultural land abandonment, widespread in the Mediterranean, is leading to a recovery of scrubland and forests which are
replacing open habitats and increasing wildfire events. Using published data, we modelled the global and regional impact of
abandonment and wildfires on 554 species of terrestrial vertebrates occurring in Mediterranean Europe. For all groups except
amphibians, open habitats or farmland sustained higher species richness. Open habitats showed regional differences in their
conservation value, western areas being particularly important for birds and amphibians and eastern areas for reptiles. Scrublands
hosted fewer species than open habitats, farmland and forest, but sustained several endemic birds and mammals. The greater
species richness of forests was mostly due to species widespread in Europe. Wildfires promote scrubland expansion in detriment
of forest; because more species are associated to eastern forests, fire is predicted to affect more seriously this region.
Scrubland conservation value was found to be highest in the west, where fire might have a positive impact. Fire regime, however,
plays a crucial role. Although large fires have a negative impact, small-scale fires may favour biodiversity in abandoned
areas. Due to the intrinsic difficulty in managing abandoned land to preserve the original Mediterranean vertebrate diversity,
the best option to achieve this goal is the development of policies designed to make farmers and traditional farmland survive. 相似文献

Recent studies of geographic patterns of nonindigenous species richness suggest that a few key biogeographic and anthropogenic factors explain much of the variation in the richness of established species. It remains unknown, however, if the factors identified in these studies are taxon- and scale-specific or if general rules apply broadly across taxa and spatial scales. To address this issue, I used multiple regression analysis to identify factors that contribute significantly to variation in nonindigenous herpetofaunal richness at a relatively small spatial scale, the county level, in Florida, USA. Additionally, I used the Jaccard similarity index to determine if nonindigenous species affect the biotic similarity of the herpetofaunas of Floridian counties. In the regression analysis, county latitude strongly and negatively affected nonindigenous herpetofaunal richness, explaining approximately two-thirds of the variation in this variable. To a smaller degree, human population and university presence both related positively with nonindigenous herpetofaunal richness. Several other variables, including county land area, were not significantly related to nonindigenous herpetofaunal richness. The consistent importance of human population to nonindigenous species richness in this and past studies suggests that the influence of anthropogenic factors may be universal and are as or more important than the natural biogeographic factors that generally relate with native species richness. No evidence of overall homogenization was found based on Jaccard index values. However, a significant relationship between homogenization scores and distance between counties suggests that the effect of nonindigenous herpetofaunal richness on the similarity of county biotas is scale-dependent, such that adjacent counties tend to experience homogenization, while distant counties tend to experience differentiation as a result of the presence of nonindigenous herpetofauna. The results of this and similar studies may be useful in predicting the introduction and spread of nonindigenous species and in evaluating the effects of such introductions on native biodiversity. 相似文献

Lizard distribution patterns in the Tumut fragmentation “Natural Experiment” in south-eastern Australia 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Lizard distribution patterns were examined in a fragmented plantation landscape in south-eastern Australia. Regression modelling was used to relate ecological variables to (1) lizard species richness, (2) lizard species composition, and (3) the presence or abundance of selected lizard species. Ecological variables covered four broad domains that affect animals: climate, space, shelter and food availability.Lizard species richness was highest at mid-elevation sites, and at locations with a large amount of native forest within 1000 m. A major change in lizard species composition was associated with elevation, the proportion of native forest within 1000 m of a site, and the abundance of springtails. The change in species composition coincided with a range of individualistic responses to environmental conditions by different lizard species. For example, with respect to shelter availability, old logs were related to the garden skink Lampropholis guichenoti, shrubs were related to the delicate skink L. delicata, and rocks were related to the red-throated skink Bassiana platynota. The garden skink was most abundant at low elevations, the delicate skink was most likely to occur at intermediate elevations, and the mountain log skink Pseudemoia entrecasteauxii was most likely to occur at high elevations. The garden skink was most abundant in areas surrounded by little native forest, whereas Maccoy’s skink Nannoscincus maccoyi and Coventry’s skink Niveoscincus coventryi were more abundant or likely to occur in areas whose context was dominated by native forest.Because animal species may respond individualistically to gradients of climate, space, shelter and food availability, continuum theory (as developed for plant ecology) may be a useful complement to fragmentation theory to explain distribution patterns. To maintain lizard diversity in the study area, it will be important to maintain maximum habitat heterogeneity at the landscape and microhabitat scales. For species otherwise threatened by plantation development, large, fairly undisturbed areas of eucalypt forest will be particularly important. 相似文献
