In the past two decades spaces for user participation have been opened within water governance structures at many scales. In this contribution, based on a case study of the Provincial Water Users Federation Interjuntas‐Chimborazo in the Ecuadorian Highlands, I explore how and why formal participation of water users in itself is problematic in terms of democracy. The case shows that for organised peasant water users to work on more democratic water governance, the creation of upscaled federations, alliances, networks and sometimes street protests is crucial to open up spaces in which their interests are represented. This suggests that democracy is not merely about participation, but more importantly, it is about the politics of how democracy is made through conflicts, protests, negotiations and the creation of strategic alliances that challenge the structures and processes through which decisions are taken.  相似文献

Summary We conducted a joint Ecuador/Colombia/United States wild potato (Solanum sect. Petota) germplasm collecting expedition in Ecuador from April 13–July 1, 1991. The goals of the expedition were to collect germplasm and study the species boundaries of all of the 25 Ecuadorian taxa accepted by current taxonomists. We made 126 collections of 24 of these 25 taxa, 113 as germplasm samples, 13 only as herbarium collections. We synonymize six of these 25 names (S. baezense Ochoa, S. cyanophyllum Correll, S. pichinchense Bitter & Sodiro, S. serratoris Ochoa, S. suffrutescens Correll as synonyms of S. andreanum Baker; S. correllii Ochoa as a synonym of S. regularifolium Correll). Four other names (S. chomatophilum f. angustifoliolum Correll, S. moscopanum Hawkes, S. solisii Hawkes, S. tundalomense Ochoa) could not be consistently distinguished from S. colombianum Dunal in the field. We are currently investigating them to determine their species status.  相似文献

Abstract. The effect of land use on the water retention capacity of Umbric Andosols in south Ecuador was studied. The objective was to acquire a better insight into the hydrological processes of the ecosystem and the role of the soil, in order to assess the impact of changing soil properties due to land use change on the hydrology of the high Andes region. Field data on the water retention capacity at wilting point of Umbric Andosols were collected for both cultivated field conditions and original bush vegetation. The pH in water and in NaF, texture, organic matter content and dry bulk density were measured to show which physicochemical soil characteristics are responsible for the water retention of the Umbric Andosols and for the irreversible loss in water retention due to air drying. Organic matter content appears to be very important and certainly more important than allophane clay content. Water retention of the organic litter layer was calculated to be 16 mm, this would be lost when vegetation was cleared and the land cultivated.  相似文献

Abstract

Effective conservation rests on an educated population. This chapter describes the status of environmental education programs in the Condor Bioreserve (CBR), Ecuador and makes recommendations for expansion of educational efforts. The major programs that are currently in place include the community park guard system, the Andean Bear Project, and workshops and networks established by the US Department of Interior and The Nature Conservancy. Most environmental education in the CBR is focused on community participation in natural resource management, and there is a relatively small amount of attention devoted to programs for teachers and children. Major recommendations include defining common goals, increasing environmental education efforts in schools, offering teacher training, developing monitoring and assessment protocols, and expanding educational efforts outside of the CBR. The paper links recommendations for improvements in environmental education in the CBR to lessons learned through research and education programs elsewhere in the world.  相似文献

Abstract

Ecuador is rich in social and cultural history, natural resources and biological diversity. The Condor Bioreserve (CBR) project of The Nature Conservancy is an effort to bring local, regional, and national voices to the table to find common ground to protect the biological diversity and cultural history of the Andean region adjacent to Quito. This volume is an introduction to the CBR, its management challenges, and management policy options. The papers in this volume represent an overview of some of the issues involved, though it is by no means comprehensive.  相似文献

Abstract

Land-use practices on private properties that abut protected areas can have a significant impact on the conservation goals of a park or reserve. In Ecuador, many of the protected areas have private properties within their boundaries, and several share buffer zones with sizeable communities. This paper (1) evaluates incentives for private landowners to assist with meeting the conservation goals of the Condor Bioreserve, and (2) makes recommendations on mechanisms and incentives that may be the most appropriate for generating a commitment from private landowners to manage for conservation values. Currently, the strategy to promote compatible management on private properties relies heavily on voluntary efforts by landowners, with only a small number of programs offering financial or material incentives in return. To create greater long-term stability in land use around protected areas, programs need to create incentives for private landowners to formalize a commitment to long-term sustainable management. We recommend (1) conservation easements and (2) conservation payments, and in special cases (3) private reserves. Solid commitments to manage private lands for conservation effectively extend protected area boundaries and allow management plans to better incorporate the ecosystem role and services that private lands provide.  相似文献

We investigated microbial biomass, fungal biomass and microbial community structure at three altitudes (1000, 2000 and 3000 m) and in two soil layers [L/F layer (Layer I) and underlying H/Ah layer (Layer II)] of tropical mountain rain forests in southern Ecuador. Basal respiration, microbial biomass and concentration of ergosterol generally declined from Layer I to Layer II and peaked at 2000 m. Compared to temperate forest ecosystems microbial biomass and ergosterol concentrations were generally low. Patterns in phospholipid fatty acids indicated that the composition of microbial communities markedly changed from Layer I to Layer II. These differences between layers decreased with increasing altitude. The concentration of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal marker PLFA 16:1ω5c decreased with altitude in Layer I but increased in Layer II. The fungal-to-bacterial ratio increased with altitude and was higher in Layer I than in Layer II. Presumably, low microbial biomass in soils of tropical forest ecosystems is due to high temperature associated with high respiration but also low litter quality, with the latter declining with altitude. These conclusions are supported by the fact that at higher altitude the microbial community changed from a bacterial-dominated to a fungal-dominated system. CCA showed that microbial biomass correlated closely with density of a number of putatively bacterial feeding testate amoeba species including Corythion dubium Taranek, 1871, Euglypha cristata Leidy, 1879, Trigonopyxis arcula Penard, 1912, Tracheleuglypha dentata Deflandre, 1928 and Trinema lineare Penard, 1890. Ergosterol concentrations, but not the PLFA 18:2ω6c, strongly correlated with the putatively fungal feeding species Phryganella acropodia (Hertwig, Lesser, 1874) Hopkinson, 1909. Generally, parallel to microbial biomass and ergosterol concentrations the density of testate amoebae peaked at 2000 m. However, compared to microbial parameters changes in testate amoebae communities between two layers were less pronounced. The data suggest that density and community structure of testate amoebae are driven by the availability of food resources (bacteria and fungi) which at high altitude decrease with increasing moisture and decreasing pH.  相似文献

The rehabilitation of indurate pyroclastic formations of the Ecuadorian Sierra (cangahua) paves the way for the development of new agricultural areas. The material derived from the fragmentation of the hardened volcanic ashes is strongly prone to pluvial erosion, essentially because it has a fine silty–sandy texture, and because contains no organic matter and no clay minerals. Rainfall simulation was implemented before and after three cycles of cultivation to asses the evolution of soil structure and its susceptibility to erosion. The cultivated plots were < 1% slope and the rainfall simulation tests were conducted after the harvest on bare surfaces. Two soil preparations, (coarse and fine) and four different agricultural practices, (organic matter, green manure, mineral fertilization, and zero fertilization) were evaluated; as well reference/control plots (uncultivated bare plots).  相似文献

Abandonement of coffee agroforests increases insect abundance and diversity   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Shade coffee including many tree species is known to support generally high biodiversity. Due to low coffee prices on the world market, many farmers have abandoned their farms, thereby creating a new ecosystem type, which has attracted increasing interest for biodiversity conservation. Here we used pyrethrum knockdown samples to compare the arthropod community on coffee plants of six traditionally managed coffee agroforests with those of six abandoned coffee agroforests in coastal Ecuador. We investigated eight randomly selected coffee shrubs per site, six of them inside and two at the edge. All arthropods were identified to orders and beetles to morphospecies. We additionally sampled the vegetation to test for vegetation-mediated effects on the arthropod community. The number of arthropod individuals was higher in abandoned than managed coffee, driven by the abundance of Arachnida, Blattaria, and Heteroptera, and higher in the edge than in the centre of the abandoned agroforests. Higher arthropod abundance appeared to be closely related to arthropod diversity, as shown for beetles (r = 0.79, n = 96). Contrary to expectations, predator-prey ratios in managed agroforests was as high as in the abandoned ones. In conclusion, abandonment of coffee agroforests greatly encourages arthropod communities, in particular in the habitat edges, and therefore, should be considered in landscape management for conservation.  相似文献
