This paper examines the relationship between external knowledge sourcing and a diverse set of innovation outcomes in rural and urban establishments in the U.S. Existing studies in the broader knowledge management literature principally examine firms in a single industry, overwhelmingly rely on patent data to proxy for innovation, and cannot account for the innovations of businesses in rural American markets. By addressing these limitations using data from the 2014 Rural Establishment Innovation Survey of the USDA's Economic Research Service, this research provides novel insights into how externally acquired knowledge by American establishments may support innovation. Results of the analysis suggest that external knowledge sourcing may specifically promote product, process, and green innovation in U.S. firms. While collective results when external sources of information are divided by industry orientation fail to show that sources outside of a firm's industry play a dominant role in the innovation processes of American establishments in general, findings provide evidence for an outsized impact of these relationships within rural establishments specifically and suggest that external knowledge sourcing from extra‐industry organizations is most critical for promoting successful innovation in rural firms. Results additionally indicate that knowledge sourcing from non‐local organizations may be more important for supporting innovation in rural compared to urban markets.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted in southern Chile to study the effect of tree cover (0 or 200 stems of 13-year-old Pinus radiate/ha), grazing severity (8 or 12 cm height at commencement of grazing by sheep) and fertilizer application rate (low or high) on the establishment and growth of Lotus uliginosus and Trifolium subterraneum, when sown in conjunction with Festuca arundinacea. The establishment of both legumes was greater in the agroforestry than the open field, and the percentage of viable seeds that were established was greater for Trifolium than Lotus. Festuca established better when sown in conjunction with Lotus in the open field. During the two years after stand establishment there was a greater reduction in the ground cover and dry matter (DM) yield of both legumes, but in particular Trifolium, in the agroforestry than in the open field. In the second year of grazing Trifolium contributed less than 9% of total DM yield in the agroforestry, compared with 22% for Lotus. The ground cover of Lotus was increased by a tall grazing height in the agroforestry, whereas Trifolium increased its cover when the grazing height was short. Additional fertilizer at establishment had a greater effect in increasing herbage yield in the open field than in agroforestry. It is concluded that both Lotus and Trifolium establishments are greater in agroforestry than in an open field, but that in agroforestry there is a reduction in legume yield over time, particularly of Trifolium. Tineola bisselliella is a common pest on natural fabrics of economic importance. Two commercially available repellents for use against adult webbing clothes moths were tested for their efficacy in dual- and no-choice bioassays. Oil of cloves and citral in combination, as well as citronellol scented with oil of lavender showed promising repellent effects for 4 weeks when applied in small compartments of a wardrobe. Although the repellent efficacy was not 100% under the conditions tested, the usage of essential oils in combination with other infestation prevention techniques is discussed.
Zusammenfassung Die KleidermotteTineola bisselliella Hum. ist einer der wirtschaftlich bedeutenden tierischen Wollzerstörer. Auch Pelze, Felle, Polsterhaare und Federn werden von dem weit verbreiteten Kleinschmetterling aus der Familie der Tineidae befallen. In der Praxis gilt es vor allem Kleidungsstücke, die z. B. saisonbedingt für längere Zeit ungenutzt in einem Kleiderschrank aufbewahrt werden, vor dem Befall durch die Kleidermotte zu schützen. Hierfür stehen dem Verbraucher neben den konventionellen Bekämpfungsmitteln mit den Wirkstoffen Kampfer, Naphthalin und Paradichlorbenzol sowie pyrethrum- und pyrethroidhaltige Mittel auch Präparate zur Verfügung, die auf die repellierende Wirkung von ätherischen Ölen zurückgreifen. Die abstoßende Wirkung von Nelkenöl in Kombination mit Citral und von Citronellol parfümiert mit Lavendelöl auf die Falter der Kleidermotte wurde auf vergleichbare Eigenschaften untersucht. In Wahlversuchen wurden deutliche Repellent-Wirkungen der Mottenschutz-Präparate sichtbar. Die Präparate zeigten gute Wirkungen, wenn sie zum Schutz gegen den Zuflug von Kleidermotten an wollhaltigen Stoffen in kleinen Kompartimenten eines Kleiderschrankes ausgelegt waren. Auch in Zwangsversuchen hatte dieser Befund zum Teil Bestand. Bei längeren Versuchszeiten wurden allerdings verstärkt Fraßschäden durch Larven an den Wollstoffen festgestellt. Dies ist darauf zurückzuführen, daß Mottenweibchen nicht mehr in dem Maße repelliert wurden und ihre Eier an den Stoffen ablegten.

For coniferous gymnosperms, few data exist as to the contribution of the membrane-associated proteome to cell wall and wood formation. In this study, we begin to address this knowledge deficiency by examining the proteomic profile of Golgi-enriched membrane preparations derived from developing Pinus radiata compression wood. These membrane preparations were generated by a combination of discontinuous sucrose gradient centrifugation and Triton X-114-based phase separation. Fractionation by phase separation removed contaminating proteins associated with the cytoskeleton and enabled the discrimination between soluble and membrane-bound/integral proteins. The proteomic analysis of the resulting aqueous and detergent phases using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry resulted in the identification of 175 proteins. The majority of the identified proteins were membrane bound/integral and originated from cellular components such as the nucleus, plastids, endoplasmic reticulum, plasma membrane and Golgi vesicles. On the basis of bioinformatic analysis, many of the identified proteins were predicted to be involved either in the regulation of wood formation or in cell wall biosynthesis, which indicated that the proteomic analysis of non-cytosolic proteins in developing xylem is a useful strategy to investigate the molecular aspects of wood formation in pine.  相似文献

Nontimber forest product harvesting in the Pacific Northwest is neither a new activity nor a disappearing relic of the pre-industrial era. Though the emphasis may have shifted from subsistence to commercial and recreational pursuits, harvesting and harvesters of wild species are still widespread throughout the region. Hundreds of businesses and thousands of harvesters earn part or all of their income from the harvests. Every year thousands of pounds and hundreds of nontimber forest products valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars are harvested from regional public and private forests. This harvesting of a large diversity of species represents a considerable subset of the overall terrestrial biodiversity in Pacific Northwest forests. Despite widespread extraction, little investment in research, planning, or basic inventorying and monitoring has been done on nontimber forest products. Without better information, land managers will be increasingly unable to make informed decisions on how to manage nontimber forest product biodiversity sustainably as demand for products increases.  相似文献

Trees adapted to mesic and xeric habits may differ in a suite of physiological responses that affect leaf-level carbon balance, including the relationship between photosynthesis (A) and respiration at night (R(n)). Understanding the factors that regulate physiological function in mesic and xeric species is critical for predicting changes in growth and distribution under changing climates. In this study, we examined the relationship between A and R(n), and leaf traits that may regulate A and R(n), in six Eucalyptus species native to mesic or xeric ecosystems, during two 24-h cycles in a common garden under high soil moisture. Peak A and R(n) generally were higher in xeric compared with mesic species. Across species, A and R(n) covaried, correlated with leaf mass per area, leaf N per unit area and daytime soluble sugar accumulation. A also covaried with g(s), which accounted for 93% of the variation in A within species. These results suggest that A and R(n) in these six Eucalyptus species were linked through leaf N and carbohydrates. Further, the relationship between A and R(n) across species suggests that differences in this relationship between mesic and xeric Eucalyptus species in their native habitats may be largely driven by environmental factors rather than inter-specific genetic variation.  相似文献

Nearly 30 years ago, Whitehead and Jarvis and Whitehead et al. postulated an elegant mechanistic explanation for the observed relationship between tree hydraulic structure and function, hypothesizing that structural adjustments promote physiological homeostasis. To date, this framework has been nearly completely overlooked with regard to varying atmospheric carbon dioxide ([CO(2)]). Here, we evaluated Whitehead's hypothesis of leaf water potential (Ψ(l)) homeostasis in faster-growing (Eucalyptus saligna) and slower-growing (Eucalyptus sideroxylon) tree saplings grown under three [CO(2)] (pre-industrial, current and future) and two temperature (ambient and ambient + 4°C) treatments. We tested for relationships between physiological (stomatal conductance and Ψ(l)) and structural (leaf and sapwood areas (A(l), A(s)), height (h), xylem conductivity (k(s))) plant variables as a function of the [CO(2)] and temperature treatments to assess whether structural variables adjusted to maintain physiological homeostasis. Structural components (A(l), A(s), h) generally increased with [CO(2)] or temperature, while g(s) was negatively correlated with [CO(2)]. Contrary to Whitehead's hypothesis, Ψ(l) did not exhibit homeostasis in either species; elevated temperatures were associated with more negative Ψ(l) in faster-growing E. saligna, and less negative Ψ(l) in slower-growing E. sideroxylon. Moreover, individual structural variables were generally uncorrelated with Ψ(l). However, across both species, the integrated hydraulic property of leaf specific hydraulic conductance (K(l)) was positively correlated with an independent calculation of K(l) determined exclusively from leaf physiological variables. These results suggest that physiological homeostasis may not apply to saplings exposed to global change drivers including [CO(2)] and temperature. Nevertheless, Whitehead et al.'s formulation identified K(l) as a sensitive measure of plant structural-physiological co-variation across species.  相似文献
