Vasovagal tonus index (VVTI) is an indirect measure of heart rate variability and may serve as a marker of disease severity. Higher heart rate variability has predicted lower tumour burden and improved survival in humans with various tumour types. The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate VVTI as a biomarker of remission status in canine lymphoma. The primary hypothesis was that VVTI would be increased in dogs in remission compared to dogs out of remission. Twenty-seven dogs were prospectively enrolled if they had a diagnosis of intermediate to high-grade lymphoma and underwent multidrug chemotherapy. Serial electrocardiogram data were collected under standard conditions and relationships between VVTI, remission status and other clinical variables were evaluated. VVTI from dogs in remission (partial or complete) did not differ from dogs with fulminant lymphoma (naive or at time of relapse). Dogs in partial remission had higher VVTI than dogs in complete remission (p = 0.021). Higher baseline VVTI was associated with higher subsequent scores (p < 0.001). VVTI also correlated with anxiety level (p = 0.03). Based on this pilot study, VVTI did not hold any obvious promise as a useful clinical biomarker of remission status. Further investigation may better elucidate the clinical and prognostic utility of VVTI in dogs with lymphoma.  相似文献

Conservation biological control avoids the need for mass releases of costly agents and the risks associated with introducing exotic agents by promoting existing natural enemies. This is done by alleviating insecticide-induced mortality and by manipulating the habitat to provide resources such as nectar, but there is a dearth of information on the relative and interactive effects of these two approaches. Here we used a large-scale factorial experiment with plots comprised of entire fields to test the effects of, and interactions between, withholding insecticides and planting borders of sesame (Sesamum indicum) on natural enemies and pests over 2 years. We used yellow sticky traps, sweeping netting and sentinel bait plants to monitor natural enemies and pests in the canopy and basal zones of the rice crop. Numbers of rice planthopper egg parasitoids and lepidopterous egg parasitoids in the rice canopy, as well as planthopper parasitism rates, were significantly greater in plots that were unsprayed and bordered by sesame, and scarcest in sprayed crops without sesame. Spraying of sesame-bordered crops gave parasitoid numbers similar to sprayed crops without sesame. Spiders in the canopy were significantly reduced in numbers by spraying, but there was no main effect of sesame borders. This study demonstrates that withholding insecticides and sowing nectar plant borders each have measurable as well as additive benefits on in-crop densities of ecosystem service providers responsible for predating and parasitising pests but the identity of the natural enemy determines the impact of these management practices.  相似文献

Backcross breeding programs have been used to transfer disease resistance and other traits from one forest tree species to another in order to meet restoration objectives. Evaluating the field performance of such material is critical for determining the success of breeding programs. In eastern North America, The American Chestnut Foundation has a backcross breeding program that uses Chinese chestnut (Castanea mollissima Blume) to introduce resistance of the fungal pathogen chestnut blight [Cryphonectria parasitica (Murr.) Barr.] to the native American chestnut [Castanea dentata (Marsh.) Borkh.]. We compared physiological and morphological characteristics among seedlings of American chestnut, Chinese chestnut, and BC1F3, BC2F3, and BC3F3 hybrid chestnuts during their fourth growing season after field-planting. American chestnut and the BC3F3 breeding generation displayed photosynthetic light-response curves that were similar to each other but different from Chinese chestnut. Rates of photosynthesis were higher for American chestnut and the BC3F3 breeding generation when compared to Chinese chestnut for light levels ≥800 μmol m?2 s?1 photosynthetic photon flux density and for maximum photosynthetic capacity. Leaf morphology variables were not different between American chestnut and any of the breeding generations, but leaf area (on a per leaf basis) of Chinese chestnut was lower than that of any other chestnut type. Our results suggest that backcross breeding can be used to transfer desirable traits for restoration of native species threatened by non-native pathogens.  相似文献

In common with much of the Western world, agrarianism—valuing farmers and agricultural activity as intrinsically worthwhile, noble, and contributing to the strength of the national character—runs through Australian culture and politics. Agrarian sentiments and attitudes have been identified through empirical research and by inference from analysis of political debate, policy content, and studies of media and popular culture. Empirical studies have, however, been largely confined to the US, with little in the way of recent re-evaluations of, or developments from, early work. This paper reports on research that seeks quantitative empirical evidence for the existence of agrarianism in the Australian community and seeks to identify its core characteristics. Using a purpose-designed sub-set of items within a large, omnibus-style survey of regional and rural Australia, we demonstrate that agrarianism exists as a scientifically quantifiable concept identifiable through responses to four key propositions: that Australians should support policies aimed at improving the position of the agricultural industries; that working in agriculture and associated industries brings out the best in people; that agricultural producers make a major contribution to environmental protection and biodiversity conservation; and that the development of agriculture in Australia contributed to the development of the national character. We found very little variation in the degree to which different demographic groupings agree with agrarianism. Older people, farmers, and non-Indigenous Australian-born respondents were among those who were statistically significantly more likely to agree with the defining propositions of agrarianism, but their scores were only very slightly higher than those of other sub-populations in the sample.  相似文献

This study describes the digestible protein (DP) and digestible energy (DE) utilization in juvenile mulloway, and determined the requirements for maintenance. This was achieved by feeding triplicate groups of fish weighing 40 or 129 g held at two temperatures (20 or 26°C), on a commercial diet (21.4 g DP mJ DE−1) at four different ration levels ranging from 0.25% of its initial body weight to apparent satiation over 8 weeks. Weight gain and protein and energy retention increased linearly with increasing feed intake. However, energy retention efficiency (ERE) and protein retention efficiency (PRE) responses were curvilinear with optimal values, depending on fish size, approaching or occurring at satiated feeding levels. Maximum predicted PRE was affected by body size, but not temperature; PRE values were 0.50 and 0.50 for small mulloway, and 0.41 and 0.43 for large mulloway, at 20 and 26°C respectively. ERE demonstrated a similar response, with values of 0.42 and 0.43 for small, and 0.32 and 0.34 for large mulloway at 20 and 26°C respectively. Utilization efficiencies for growth based on linear regression for DP (0.58) and DE (0.60) were independent of fish size and temperature. The partial utilization efficiencies of DE for protein (k p) and lipid (k l) deposition estimated using a factorial multiple regression approach were 0.49 and 0.75 respectively. Maintenance requirements estimated using linear regression were independent of temperature for DP (0.47 g DP kg−0.7 day−1) while maintenance requirements for DE increased with increasing temperature (44.2–49.6 kJ DE kg−0.8 day−1). Relative feed intake was greatest for small mulloway fed to satiation at 26°C and this corresponded to a greater increase in growth. Large mulloway fed to satiation ate significantly more at 26°C, but did not perform better than the corresponding satiated group held at 20°C. Mulloway should be fed to satiation to maximize growth potential if diets contain 21.4 g DP mJ DE−1.  相似文献

The Portuguese millipede, Ommatoiulus moreleti, was first recorded in Australia on Eyre Peninsula, South Australia in 1953. By the early 1980s, O. moreleti had spread to several sites across southern Australia where it had become a significant nuisance pest invading houses in large numbers in autumn and spring. At that time, it was predicted that O. moreleti would further expand its distribution to occupy most areas of southern Australia with mean annual rainfall of 300–2400 mm (excluding areas with summer rain maxima), mean daily minimum air temperatures in winter of 0–15 °C and mean daily maximum temperatures in summer of 18–33 °C, based on climatic matching of where it had already spread to. This paper reports the known distribution of O. moreleti in Australia in 2013 and confirms the earlier prediction. Whilst stadial age and body size (width) of O. moreleti now vary greatly between individual sites in Australia, geographic scale patterns in these traits are slight, with both age and size only weakly correlated with rainfall and temperature. Millipedes are smaller in Australia compared with Portugal. The importance of this size variation is discussed with reference to its likely influence on fecundity and the success of an introduced biological control agent (Pelidnoptera nigripennis: Diptera, Sciomyzidae).  相似文献

 Worsening water scarcity will increase pressure to use water more productively. In the classical view of irrigation research, some important aspects are often ignored: the total water balance approach, productivity of water, food security, and irrigation-system level analyses. These four approaches were evaluated using a detailed agro-hydrological model applied to an irrigation system in western Turkey. Emphasis was placed on the two dominant crops in the area: cotton and grapes. According to the classical point of view, the only result would be to irrigate the cotton with 1000 mm and the grapes with 800 mm. From the water productivity point of view, however, the water productivity of grapes appeared to be maximal without any irrigation; while for the cotton, irrigation at 600 mm maximizes water productivity. To minimize risks and increase yield stability, grapes perform better than cotton. Finally, from the irrigation system point of view, decisions can be made about the desirable cropping pattern and the distribution of water between crops. With limited amounts of water available for irrigation, a cropping pattern consisting mainly of grapes is desired; while with higher water availability, a mixture of cotton and grapes is preferable.
