Multiple regression analyses were applied to the respiration data obtained by an excision method to distinguish between maintenance
and growth respiration in stems ofPinus densiflora. Among several types of regression models, a few models showed marked stability of coefficient of growth related respiration
that are independent of degrees of correlation between predictors and any combinations of predictors. These models predicted
growth respiration as 0.45 g CO2 g (dry weight)−1. At 15°C, sapwood maintenance respiration rate was estimated to 0.72 mg CO2 g−1 day−1. These estimates were not different from the results obtained with standing trees. 相似文献

To identify the stomach contents of marine organisms, morphological observations are commonly conducted. However, the results obtained by this traditional method are frequently biased, as it is difficult to detect partially digested, soft-bodied organisms. To resolve this, recent studies have used DNA-based (DNA barcoding) analyses to examine the diet breadth of marine organisms. Here, we compared the prey richness of juvenile fishes using morphological observations and DNA-based analyses, with a focus on juvenile chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta. A higher number of prey taxa were successfully identified using DNA-based analyses than morphological observations. However, we also noticed several shortcomings of the DNA-based analyses, as reported in other diet-analysis studies that used molecular techniques. For example, the degree of digestion among prey taxa might have resulted in differential sensitivity to DNA detection. Additionally, several prey taxa could not be precisely identified, as the sequence data for some of the targeted organismal groups are unavailable in public gene databases. Remarkably, it is also possible that DNA-based analyses detected secondary prey, and therefore, the richness of prey taxa was likely overestimated. Thus, dietary analyses of juvenile fishes need to be carefully conducted, considering the respective advantages and disadvantages of DNA-based and morphological techniques. 相似文献

We found that river water is acidified not only in the first stage but also in the later stage of the snowmelt season in Japan, which differs from the so called acid shock occurring in the first stage of the snowmelt in the northern Europe. The acid shocks depend on the regional characteristics of the melt-refreeze processes forming the internal distribution of acid materials within snow crystals under the warm metamorphism. In a warm climatic region like the central Japan, there are possibilities to have the complicated distribution structure of acid materials within granular-snow crystals due to the repeated melt-refreeze processes even in midwinter. Consequently, the pH value of meltwater does not always increase as the snowmelt proceeds. Then, we showed the possibility by using the X-ray computed tomography that the domains with the acid materials exist in the inner parts of snow crystals. Constituents in a distillation residue of Awamori (millet spirits) and their antioxidant activity are investigated in this study. The supernatant of the distillation residue obtained by centrifugation was partitioned with n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol against water to afford the corresponding solubles. Among them, n-hexane and chloroform solubles showed higher antioxidant potency than l-ascorbic acid by the bleomycin-Fe method. In chloroform solubles, seven cyclic dipeptides were identified along with ethyl 2-pyrrolidione-5-carboxylate, tyrosol, and ethyl p-hydoroxyphenyllactate. Antioxidant activity of ethyl p-hydoroxyphenyllactate was 4.2 times that of l-ascorbic acid, whereas cyclic dipeptides showed activity 0.89-1.29 times as strong as that of l-ascorbic acid. On the other hand, scavenging effect of cyclic dipeptides against O(2)(-.) and OH(.) by using electron spin resonance was also investigated. In the results, cyclo(l-Ile-l-Pro) showed significantly strong inhibitory effect against OH(.) (95.4% at 2.5 x 10-3 M) and cyclo(l-Phe-l-Pro), cyclo(l-Pro-l-Val), and cyclo(l-Leu-l-Pro) inhibited OH(.) 64.9, 54.1, and 51.0%, respectively, whereas alpha-tocopherol showed 37.7% inhibition, though only a few cyclic dipeptides weakly inhibited O(2)(-.). 相似文献

Myoglobin (Mb) was isolated from bullet tuna (Auxis rochei) skeletal muscle and characterized from the viewpoint of the thermostability-structure relationship. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement showed that the thermostability of bullet tuna Mb was the lowest among all the scombridae fish Mbs so far examined. The highest value (72.8 degrees C) of melting temperature (Tm) was obtained at pH 6.52. alpha-Helical content at 10 degrees C was 34.5%, clearly lower than that of horse Mb (55.3%). The amino acid sequence was then deduced by cloning cDNA which encodes bullet tuna Mb. Bullet tuna Mb consisted of 147 amino acids, and the sequence identity was very close to that of skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis) Mb (91.8%). A few amino acid substitutions, which could be involved in stability difference of Mb, were recognized. By mass spectrometry of lysyl endoproteinase digest of Mb, the N-terminus was found to be acetylated like that of other fish Mbs. 相似文献

In this study, we applied a novel psycho-educational horseback riding (PEHR) program to
the treatment of four Japanese children with pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) in
order to facilitate the acquisition of verbal and nonverbal communication skills. The
behavioral changes in each child were evaluated using a psychological and behavioral
scale. The scale for evaluating the effect of Human-Equips-Interaction on Mental activity
(HEIM scale) was designed to assess the behavioral improvement of children based on the
following 10 items: Human relationships, Imitation, Emotional expression, Sudden physical
movement, Fixative behavior, Adaptation to change, Visual response, Fear or nervousness,
and Verbal and nonverbal communication. After taking part in the PEHR program for several
months, all subjects showed remarkably improved HEIM scores and marked improvements were
observed in eye contact with others (instructors, side walkers, and leaders) in the riding
area. A statistical difference was found in items 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, and 9. However, no
statistical difference was found in items 4, 5, and 10. As the program progressed, the
children showed enhanced verbal and nonverbal communication skills, and became more
expressive in their emotional and empathetic interaction with their parents. These
observations suggest that the normal functioning of pleasurable emotions and empathy may
facilitate further improvements in joint attention, imitation and empathy, and may result
in successful verbal expression by PDD children. Therefore, horseback riding can play a
very important role in the psycho-educational support required for the communication
