It is well reported in the scientific literature that pastures can have similar net forage accumulation when managed with contrasting structures. However, we hypothesized that the dynamics of forage accumulation in grazed swards is linked to seasonal-environmental conditions. Marandu palisadegrass (Brachiaria brizantha [Hochst. ex A. Rich.] was used as the forage species model. The experimental treatments were four grazing heights (10, 20, 30 and 40 cm) allocated to experimental units according to a randomized complete block design with four replicates and evaluated throughout four contrasting environmental seasons (summer, autumn, winter–early spring and late spring). Under rainy and warm periods, greater net forage accumulation was observed in pastures maintained taller; on the contrary, during the mild and dry periods, net forage accumulation rate reduced as grazing height increased. Such patterns of responses were related to compensations between tiller population density and tissues flows during summer and late spring and the reduced capacity of taller canopies to compensate lower population with greater growth rates during autumn and winter–early spring. Grazed swards changed their patterns of forage growth as they transitioned from favourable to more abiotic stressful conditions, suggesting that seasonal adjustments in grazing intensities are necessary in order to maximize forage production.  相似文献

We estimated the date of onset (Date(est)) of cambial activity by the pinning method in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees at Vanttauskoski (Site 1) and Laanila (Site 2) near the latitudinal limit of Scots pine in northern Finland. In each year and at each site, observations were made on a different set of five trees. The estimated dates of onset of cambial activity were compared with the corresponding heat sums, calculated in degree-days according to two models. Within years, Date(est) varied among trees by up to 15 days at Site 1 and up to 13 days at Site 2. Among years, mean Date(est) varied by 15.3 days at Site 1 and 12.0 days at Site 2. The overall mean Date(est) differed between sites by 6 days (June 5 at Site 1 and June 11 at Site 2). Among all trees in all years, the mean number of degree days (d.d.) calculated from mean daily temperature above a threshold of 5 degrees C before Date(est) ranged from 68.7 to 135 d.d. at Site 1 and from 37.4 to 154.7 d.d. at Site 2. Among years, the mean heat sum before Date(est )ranged from 94 to 112.5 d.d. at Site 1 and from 61.4 to 136 d.d. at Site 2. Variation among years in heat sum before Date(est) at Site 2 was highly significant, indicating that one or more factors other than, or in addition to, heat sum determines the onset of cambial activity in Scots pine. Similar results were obtained when heat sum was computed from the area between the sine wave generated by daily maximum and minimum temperature and the threshold temperature.  相似文献

We investigated tree water relations in a lower tropical montane rain forest at 1950-1975 m a.s.l. in southern Ecuador. During two field campaigns, sap flow measurements (Granier-type) were carried out on 16 trees (14 species) differing in size and position within the forest stand. Stomatal conductance (g(s)) and leaf transpiration (E(l)) were measured on five canopy trees and 10 understory plants. Atmospheric coupling of stomatal transpiration was good (decoupling coefficient Omega = 0.25-0.43), but the response of g(s) and E(l) to the atmospheric environment appeared to be weak as a result of the offsetting effects of vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) on g(s). In contrast, sap flow (F) followed these atmospheric parameters more precisely. Daily F depended chiefly on PPF sums, whereas on short time scales, VPD impeded transpiration when it exceeded a value of 1-1.2 kPa. This indicates an upper limit to transpiration in the investigated trees, even when soil water supply was not limiting. Mean g(s) was 165 mmol m(-2) s(-1) for the canopy trees and about 90 mmol m(-2) s(-1) for the understory species, but leaf-to-leaf as well as tree-to-tree variation was large. Considering whole-plant water use, variation in the daily course of F was more pronounced among trees differing in size and crown status than among species. Daily F increased sharply with stem diameter and tree height, and ranged between 80 and 120 kg day(-1) for dominant canopy trees, but was typically well below 10 kg day(-1) for intermediate and suppressed trees of the forest interior.  相似文献

During the years 2008 to 2010 beetles of the genus Agriotes were monitored by means of pheromone traps in Rhineland-Palatinate. Each trap contained the female sexual pheromone of either Agriotes obscurus, A. sordidus, A. lineatus, A. sputator, or A. ustulatus. Beetles of these species could be caught, additionally also specimens of the species A. gallicus, A. acuminatus, and A. pilosellus. Specimens of A. brevis and A. proximus could not be caught, not even in traps with pheromones according to their species. The high frequency of A. sputator in the Upper Rhine Valley and mild river valleys was surprising. This might be an explanation for the increasing damages especially in potatoes during the past seven years. Also the species A. ustulatus occurred mainly in the Rhine Valley. The species A. obscurus was found predominantly in higher altitudes, A. lineatus and A. sputator appeared in the whole area, with varying frequencies. In all, we could determine the composition of Agriotes-species in 27 fields. In two fields traps were exposed in two subsequent years, in one field in three years. The changes in the populations are shown. The beetles collected in some fields were compared with the according wireworms.  相似文献

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) are useful to facilitate crop improvement via enhanced knowledge of marker-trait associations (MTA). A GWAS for grain yield (GY), yield components, and agronomic traits was conducted using a diverse panel of 239 soft red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum) genotypes evaluated across two growing seasons and eight site-years. Analysis of variance showed significant environment, genotype, and genotype-by-environment effects for GY and yield components. Narrow sense heritability of GY (h 2  = 0.48) was moderate compared to other traits including plant height (h 2  = 0.81) and kernel weight (h 2  = 0.77). There were 112 significant MTA (p < 0.0005) detected for eight measured traits using compressed mixed linear models and 5715 single nucleotide polymorphism markers. MTA for GY and agronomic traits coincided with previously reported QTL for winter and spring wheat. Highly significant MTA for GY showed an overall negative allelic effect for the minor allele, indicating selection against these alleles by breeders. Markers associated with multiple traits observed on chromosomes 1A, 2D, 3B, and 4B with positive minor effects serve as potential targets for marker assisted breeding to select for improvement of GY and related traits. Following marker validation, these multi-trait loci have the potential to be utilized for MAS to improve GY and adaptation of soft red winter wheat.  相似文献

Nitrate determination in leachates from farmyard manure by UV absorption A simple, sufficiently sensitive (< 1 ppm NO3?-N) method for nitrate determination in leachates from farmyard manure is described, suitable for routine analysis. The well known determination by UV absorption is preceded by a precipitation of organic matter with ZnSO4BO7. By this, average NO3?-N contents of 48.7 ppm were detected in leachates from cattle manure heaps (n = 54).  相似文献

The formation of conjugates between beta-lactoglobulin and acacia gum based on electrostatic complexes formed at pH 4.2 was investigated upon dry-state incubation for up to 14 days at 60 degrees C and 79% relative humidity (RH). By means of SEC-HPLC and RP-HPLC, it was shown that the beta-lactoglobulin incubated alone was able to form polymers with molecular masses higher than 200 kDa until 50% of the initial monomeric protein disappeared after 14 days. In the presence of acacia gum at initial protein to polysaccharide weight mixing ratios of 2:1 and 1:2, only 35% of the initial beta-lactoglobulin monomers disappeared after 14 days. Using RP-HPLC, an apparent reaction order of 2 was found for the disappearance of monomeric beta-lactoglobulin both in the presence or absence of acacia gum. However, the reaction rate was faster in the absence of acacia gum. SDS-PAGE electrophoresis with silver staining confirmed the formation of beta-lactoglobulin/acacia gum conjugates. The solubility curves of the incubated beta-lactoglobulin showed a minimum around pH 4-5. By contrast, the minimum of solubility of the beta-lactoglobulin/acacia gum incubated mixtures shifted to lower pH values compared to initial mixtures. The conjugates exhibited higher foam capacity than the incubated protein as well as lower equilibrium air/water surface tension. Conjugation at ratio 1:2 led to increased interfacial viscosity (300 mN s m(-1) at 0.01 Hz) compared to beta-lactoglobulin alone (100 mN s m(-1) at 0.01 Hz), but similar interfacial elasticity (30-40 mN m(-1)). The foam capacity of the conjugates was significantly higher than that of the incubated beta-lactoglobulin as well as foam expansion and drainage time, especially at pH 5.3, i.e., higher than the pH of formation of the conjugates.  相似文献

Key catchments of the Roztocze loess area in south-east Poland have a great potential of revealing the history of long-term soil erosion and changes in land use. The knowledge of how and when soil erosion took place in the past helps one understand the impact of land use changes on the landscapes [Bork, H.-R., 1989. Soil erosion during the past Millennium in Central Europe and its significance within the geomorphodynamics of the Holocene. Catena 15, 121–131]. The Jedliczny Dol gully system near the town Zwierzyniec in south-east Poland was investigated by using detailed field stratigraphy and radiocarbon dating of charcoal and wood.In connection with new settlements which were established between the 14th and 16th centuries, arable land was cultivated and forests were used much more intensively. As a consequence, the loess soils were strongly eroded during heavy rainfalls. Up to 4 m of colluvial sediments were deposited in the gully system during the 15th and/or 16th centuries. The thickness of the colluvial sediments indicate severe erosion which might be related to excessive timber exploitation for the local glass and iron production. With the foundation of the so-called Ordinariat Zamoyski at the end of the 16th century, some parts of the area were presumably reforested. High pressure on the land at the beginning of the 19th century enabled a second main phase of gulling before 1900.Since 1890 at the latest, almost the whole catchment is used as a forest, however, concentrated runoff on compacted forest roads can still be high after heavy rainfalls.In loess areas soil erosion caused by intensive land use, triggered by heavy rainfalls, can change the landscape drastically. These changes will continue to influence how catchments react, even if land use gets less intensive again. This knowledge should be considered regarding future, sustainable land use and recent changes in land use in the south-eastern Polish loess regions.  相似文献

A method for the detection of the effects of antibiotics on soil microbial communities was optimised in the present study. We investigated the influence of measurement time and nutrient status on the pollution-induced community tolerance (PICT), using the sulfonamide sulfachloropyridazine (SCP) as model compound. The tolerance development in soil microcosms that were exposed to SCP under different conditions was compared with the background tolerance in SCP-unexposed microcosms. The tolerance of bacterial extracts from the soil microcosms was determined in Biolog® multiwell plates as the SCP sensitivity of a range of physiological processes. The background tolerance was not affected by soil nutrient amendments, but an influence of the inoculum density in the microtiter plates was observed. Still, the variance of the background tolerance was low, which is in favour of the usage of community tolerance measurements for a selective detection of a toxicant impact. In line with the assumptions of the PICT concept, soil amendment with SCP led to an increase in community tolerance. This tolerance development was enhanced upon additional soil amendment with fresh pig slurry, and less by alfalfa meal addition. Tolerance increases were observed after a soil exposure to SCP of only 7 days, possibly because nutrient input facilitates the fast adaptation of the soil microbial community. However, a further increase in exposure time led to variable changes in the observed tolerance. Prolonged tolerance detection in the microtiter plates (11 days) enabled a clearer differentiation between different soil treatments, as it better resolved the EC50 values of processes with a high tolerance to bacteriostatic antimicrobial compounds. For the detection of antibiotic effects on soil microbial communities, it is therefore recommended to use nutrient amendments (possibly fresh pig slurry), to standardize the soil exposure time, and to extend the period of Biolog plate measurement beyond 7 days.  相似文献
