Human appropriation of net primary productivity (HANPP) is employed as a measure of human pressures on biodiversity, though largely at global and national scales rather than landscape to regional scales where many conservation decisions take place. Though gaining in familiarity, HANPP is not widely utilized by conservation professionals.
Objectives
This study, encompassing the US side of the Great Lakes basin, examines how regional distributions of HANPP relate to landscape-based biodiversity proxy metrics used by conservation professionals. Our objectives were (1) to quantify the HANPP of managed lands at the county scale; and (2) to assess spatial patterns of HANPP in comparison to landscape diversity and local habitat connectedness to determine if the metric can provide useful information to conservation professionals.
Methods
We aggregated forest and cropland NPP data between 2005 and 2015 and coupled it with previously published potential vegetation maps to quantify the HANPP of each county in the study region. We mapped the outputs at 500 m resolution to analyze spatial relationships between HANPP and landscape metrics of biodiversity potential.
Results
Area-weighted HANPP across our study region averaged 45% of NPP, down to 4.9% in forest-dominated counties. Greater HANPP correlated with reduced landscape diversity (p?<?0.001, r2?=?0.28) and reduced local habitat connectedness (p?<?0.001, r2?=?0.36).
Conclusion
HANPP could be used as an additional tool for conservation professionals during regional-scale land use planning or conservation decision-making, particularly in mixed-use landscapes that both support important biodiversity and have high levels of primary production harvest.
There is an increasing risk of Lyme disease in Canada due to range expansion of the tick vector, Ixodes scapularis. The objectives of this article are to i) raise public awareness with the help of veterinarians on the emerging and expanding risk of Lyme disease across Canada, ii) review the key clinical features of Lyme disease in dogs, and iii) provide recommendations for veterinarians on the management of Lyme disease in dogs. 相似文献
Three adult Pomeranian dogs, full siblings from 2 litters, were diagnosed with primary hypoadrenocorticism following onset of hypoadrenal crisis. Review of the family history revealed the dogs’ maternal grandmother also had hypoadrenocorticism. All 4 dogs were pedigree-certified by the American Kennel Club. An inherited basis for hypoadrenocorticism is proposed in these Pomeranian dogs. 相似文献
Coastal Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) populations are found from northern Canada to New England. The extent of anadromy generally decreases with latitude, but the ecology and movements of more southern populations are poorly understood. We conducted a 33‐month acoustic telemetry study of Brook Trout in Red Brook, MA, and adjacent Buttermilk Bay (marine system) using 16 fixed acoustic receivers and surgically implanting acoustic transmitters in 84 individuals. Tagged Brook Trout used the stream, estuary (50% of individuals) and bay (10% of individuals). Movements into full sea water were brief when occurring. GAMM models revealed that transitions between habitat areas occurred most often in spring and fall. Environmental data suggest that use of the saline environment is limited by summer temperatures in the bay. Movements may also be related to moon phase. Compared to more northern coastal populations of Brook Trout, the Red Brook population appears to be less anadromous overall, yet the estuarine segment of the system may have considerable ecological importance as a food resource. 相似文献
This study investigated the effects of photoperiod and temperature on plasma melatonin secretion in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.). Initial work confirmed the presence of a diel profile of melatonin synthesis, with elevated levels during the dark phase. Unusually for fish, the peak in plasma melatonin occurred towards the end of the dark phase, which is indicative of a type `A' melatonin profile. When exposed to 60 hours of continuous darkness a clear endogenous rhythm of melatonin synthesis was observed, which continued for 4 cycles with a periodicity which, approximated to 24 h. When acclimated to varying temperatures (4, 8, 12 or 16 °C) no variation in melatonin production was seen, however, body size appeared to be an important influence, with the smallest fish exhibiting significantly higher levels of dark phase melatonin. Finally, the application of additional night-time illumination to cod maintained in sea cages i.e. without blackout, did not significantly reduce dark phase plasma melatonin, suggesting that cod are less sensitive to photoperiod manipulation in cages than salmonids. 相似文献
Living in poverty is associated with high levels of protracted stress associated with health problems. Economic and food insecurity
are particularly poignant aspects of poverty and condition the work of securing basic daily needs of families. Recent studies
suggest that levels of stress increase as family food needs rise. This paper presents new findings which clarify the relationship
of food provisioning to stress levels, by examining actual food provisioning strategies and food insecurity among the Northern
Cheyenne Indians of southeastern Montana. Results clearly show that stress varies by types of food acquisition strategies.
Contrary to our expectations, more complex strategies, including relatively unpredictable and cumbersome food provisioning
activities, are not linked to higher stress levels in our analysis. Controlling for food security levels, households using
a combination of local programs and informal subsistence sources are the least stressed, despite the demands of managing a
large number of food sources. Households primarily using Food Stamps are the most likely to experience high levels of stress.
Interviews with Food Stamp recipients show that potential sources of stress include inadequate allocations of Food Stamps,
difficulty achieving and maintaining eligibility, challenges to complying with paperwork and appointment requirements, as
well as personal obstacles and community barriers to making food stamps last. Analyses indicate that contradictions between
local cultural norms for food provisioning and the realities of food insecurity in this context promote strategies emphasizing
greater independence from federal food programs. 相似文献
Zebrasoma flavescens (Bennett) aquaculture is limited by high mortality during first feeding. Photoperiod, light intensity, turbidity and prey density are culture parameters that have been shown to affect feed incidence and survival in some food fish species, offering a logical starting point to improve first feeding in Z. flavescens. This study aimed to determine the effect of photoperiod, light intensity, turbidity and prey density on feed incidence and survival in larval yellow tang age 3 DPH to 5 DPH (days post hatch). Larvae were reared in four photoperiods (24L:0D, 16L:8D, 12L:12D, 0L:24D), four light intensities (1,500, 3,000, 4,500 and 6,500 lx), three turbidity ranges (0 cells/ml, 100,000–200,000 cells/ml and 400,000–600,000 cells/ml) and four prey densities (1, 3, 6 and 9 per mL). Photoperiod at 16L:8D and 12L:12D significantly increased feed incidence; 16L:8D significantly increased survival. Light intensities at 3,000 and 4,500 lx significantly increased feed incidence. Larvae reared in 400,000–600,000 cells/ml fed and survived significantly better than those in clear water. Larvae in 1 per mL fed and survived significantly less than those fed at 6 per mL. 相似文献
