In the present study, the growth and the Cu2+accumulation by roots, shoots and leaves of Zea mays were examined using copper sulphate in the range of 10?4 to 10?2 M. Plants of Z. mays did not show inhibition of growth in the presence of 10?4 to 10?2 M Cu2+; however, it was observed growth effects on root when different Cu2+ solution concentrations were used. Only the seedlings exposed to 10?2 M exhibited substantial root growth reduction, yielding only 56% of length with respect to the control. Seedlings exposed to 10?4 M Cu2+ exhibited 16% and 42% growth increase in shoots and leaves, respectively, when compared with the controls. The seedlings treated with 10?3 and 10?2 M Cu2+ were inhibited in shoot and leaf growth. The fresh weights in roots, shoots and leaves significantly decreased at 10?2 M Cu2+. The tolerance index, based on root length, was not significantly different for the three different treatments with copper. However, the total accumulation rate was very low at 10?4 and 10?3 M compared to 10?2 Cu treatments. The capacity of copper accumulation by roots, shoots and leaves of Z. mays plants increased concomitant to the copper concentration, arriving to 382 times more in roots, 157 in shoots and only 16 in leaves, all compared to the controls. Cu could be accumulated by roots, shoots and leaves when the initial concentrations were 10?3 and 10?4 M. However, when it was 10?2 M, the metal could not be accumulated by leaf and shoot levels; the roots could increase their copper accumulation capacity three times compared to the control. Z. mays has potential ability to accumulate Cu without being overly sensitive to Cu toxicity.  相似文献

Wild waterfowl is considered a natural reservoir of potentially infectious agents and a source of pathogenic viruses like avian paramyxoviruses type 1 (APMV 1). In 1997, commercial poultry in Argentina had reached the status of being free from virulent Newcastle disease virus (NDV) infections. Vaccination and biosecurity measures are actively performed to maintain this preferential sanitary condition. However, the risk of reintroduction of pathogenic viruses is always present. In this context, we conducted a study to describe the status of wild healthy birds in a geographic region relevant for the poultry industry. The presence of anti-NDV antibodies was determined in different species in all areas sampled suggesting previous contact with NDV. Seven ND viruses were isolated and characterized as apathogenic strains by biological and molecular methods. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that the majority of the Argentinian isolates form a subgroup related to viruses of genotype II. The results presented here highlight the importance of maintaining strict biosecurity measures and vaccination programs in poultry industries in order to preserve the virulent NDV-free status for commercial flocks in the country.  相似文献

Units have been designed to house calves for veal production, but only recently has a large intensive unit been designed to rear surplus dairy-bred calves for beef production in New Zealand. Arsenic, an environmental pollutant, is present in minute but invariable amounts in food, drinking water and ambient air. Izmir is founded on a land of long extinct volcanoes, with vast areas of lava ground suitable for agriculture. It is located at close vicinity to high thermal activity, e.g., hot springs and thermal baths. In the present study, total arsenic level in breast milk was assessed in randomly chosen 35 lactating women of different socioeconomic levels who live downtown in Izmir and in milk of 36 cows grazing on shoulder grass of highways with heavy traffic. Total arsenic was assessed on an atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AA-680 Shimadzu). Mean (± SEM) arsenic was found to be 4.219 ± 0.079 µg L-1 in breast milk, and 4.932 ± 0.38 µg L-1 in cow's milk. Conclusion: in Izmir, arsenic contamination of breast milk was not found so as to be considered noxious for suckling infants, whereas was found relatively higher in cow's milk. It would be prudent to remember breast and cow's milk arsenic contamination in breast fed or milk fed babies living in areas with higher thermal activity or in regions where ground water is with high arsenic content.  相似文献

A study was conducted in Tigrai, Northern Ethiopia to describe the sheep breeds and their production system. The survey was done in selected districts known for their high sheep population density. The phenotype characterization identified distinct features for each breed. The breeds are Aberegelle, Ille, Begait, and the common Tigrai highland sheep. The strong discriminating phenotypes are face profile, tail type, and compactness; accounting for 83.48, 17.95, and 2.93 % respectively of the total variability among breeds. The flock structure are affected by the market demand; requirements of breeding females and feed availability. Farmers tend to keep more female sheep for longer (culling age of 5.9?±?0.4 and 1.9?±?0.5 for females and males, respectively) for the reasons of feed shortage and need to maximize number of breeding female. The ratio of male to overall female is large (1:6) and thus a single ram gets maximum contact time with ewes and ewe lambs. The overall average age at puberty for females is 9–14 months. However, the presence of very young lamb rams and uncontrolled mating system lead to early breeding of females which results in low conception rate, low birth weight, poor survival rates, and in extreme cases causing inbreeding. It was also possible to identify the critical control points such as breed, age of animals, nutrition, and feeding systems affecting the provision of live animals for good meat quality.  相似文献

Phosphorus (P) nutrition has been suggested to play a role in the alleviation of manganese (Mn) toxicity in some higher plant species. However, there are few reports on the role of P in regulating Mn accumulation by forage species. We studied the effect of P nutrition on Mn toxicity in Lolium perenne L. and Trifolium repens L. An increase in Mn concentration in root and shoot tissues was associated with an increase in both P supply and P tissue concentrations. Nevertheless, in both forage species, especially white clover, plant‐growth inhibition caused by Mn excess was decreased with increasing P additions. Moreover, the carboxylate exudation that had increased in response to high Mn was gradually reduced by increasing P supply. We suggest that P supply may have a beneficial effect in reducing the severity of Mn toxicity in forage species.  相似文献

Ethylene action can be counteracted by 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), which has been used during postharvest storage to maintain quality. In this work, we evaluated the effect of 1-MCP treatments on eggplant quality and phenolic metabolism during refrigerated storage. Eggplants (cv. Lucía) were harvested at commercial maturity, treated with 1-MCP (1 μL/L, 12 h at 20 °C), stored at 10 °C for 21 d and subsequently held at 20 °C for 2 d. Corresponding controls were stored at 10 °C and then transferred to 20 °C for 2 d. During storage calyx color, damage and chlorophyll content, fruit weight loss and firmness, pulp sugar content, acidity, browning and total phenolics were measured. In addition, polyphenol oxidase (PPO), pyrogallol peroxidase (POD), and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activities were evaluated. Fruit calyxes showed reduced damage and remained greener in 1-MCP treated than in control fruit. 1-MCP treated eggplants showed lower weight loss. Pulp browning was clearly prevented as a consequence of 1-MCP exposure, and this was associated with delayed senescence, lower accumulation of total phenolics and reduced activity of PAL. The activity of the enzymes PPO and POD involved in the oxidation of phenolics compounds was also decreased in 1-MCP treated fruit. Results suggest that 1-MCP treatments delay senescence, prevent browning and are beneficial to complement low temperature storage and maintain quality of non-climacteric eggplant fruit.  相似文献
