Riparian forests are classified as endangered ecosystems in general, particularly in sahelian countries like Burkina Faso because of human-induced alterations and civil engineering works. The modification of this important habitat is continuing, with little attention being paid to the ecological or human consequences of these changes. The objective of this study is to describe the variation of woody species diversity and dynamic in riparian forests on different type of watercourse banks along phytogeographical gradient in Burkina Faso. All woody species were systematically measured in 90 sample plots with sides of 50 m × 20 m.Density, dominance, frequency and species and family importance values were computed to characterize the species composition.Different diver-sity indices were calculated to examine the heterogeneity of riparian forests.A total of 196 species representing 139 genera and 51 families were recorded in the overall riparian forests. The species richness of individuals with dbh ≥ 5cm increased significantly from the North to the South along the phytogeographical gradient and varied significantly between the different types of riparian forests.Similarity in tree species composition between riparian forests was low, which indicates high beta diversity and reflects differences in habitat conditions and topography. The structural characteristics varied significantly along the phyto-geographical gradient and between the different types of riparian forests. The diameter class distribution of trees in all riparian forests showed a reverse "J" shaped curve except riparian forest of stream indicating vegetation dominated by juvenile individuals.Considering the ecological importance of riparian forest, there is a need to delineate and classify them along watercourses throughout the country.

Surveys were conducted in 2016 and 2017 across the main cassava-growing regions of Burkina Faso to assess the status of cassava mosaic disease (CMD) and to determine the virus strains causing the disease, using field observation and phylogenetic analysis. CMD incidence varied between regions and across years but was lowest in Hauts-Bassins (6.0%, 2016 and 5.4%, 2017) and highest in Centre-Sud (18.5%, 2016) and in Boucle du Mouhoun (51.7%, 2017). The lowest CMD severity was found in Est region (2.0) for both years and the highest in Sud-Ouest region (3.3, 2016) and Centre-Sud region (2.8, 2017). The CMD infection was primarily associated with contaminated cuttings in all regions except in Hauts-Bassins, where whitefly-borne infection was higher than cuttings-borne infection in 2016. PCR screening of 687 samples coupled with sequence analysis revealed the presence of African cassava mosaic-like (ACMV-like) viruses and East African cassava mosaic-like (EACMV-like) viruses as single infections at 79.5% and 1.1%, respectively. Co-infections of ACMV-like and EACMV-like viruses were detected in 19.4% of the tested samples. In addition, 86.7% of the samples positive for EACMV-like virus were found to be positive for East African cassava mosaic Cameroon virus (EACMCMV). Phylogenetic analysis revealed the segregation of cassava mosaic geminiviruses (CMGs) from Burkina Faso into three clades specific to ACMV, African cassava mosaic Burkina Faso virus (ACMBFV), and EACMCMV, confirming the presence of these viruses. The results of this study show that EACMCMV occurrence may be more prevalent in Burkina Faso than previously thought.  相似文献

  • ? Seedling density and the regeneration mechanisms of five tree species, Anogeissus leiocarpa, Combretum aculeatum, Combretum micranthum, Combretum nigricans, and Pteleopsis suberosa were investigated in relation to latitudinal gradient across the Sahelo-Sudanian zone of West Africa.
  • ? Data were collected on 461 quadrats (2 m × 5 m) laid out every 30 m on transect lines through Combretaceae communities at four latitudinal positions. Regeneration mechanisms were determined by excavating the below ground root system and assessing basal and aerial sprouts.
  • ? The results showed a significant species × latitudinal position effect on the total density of seedling populations, and the density of single- and multi-stemmed individuals (p < 0.001). C. aculeatum and C. micranthum were abundant in the North-Sahelian sector, C. nigricans and P. suberosa in the Sudanian sector and A. leiocarpa across a wide range from the South-Sahelian to South-Sudanian sectors. In general, 58% of the seedlings were regenerated asexually (as coppice, water sprout, layer, and root sucker) while 42% were sexual recruits (as true seedling and seedling sprouts). The proportion of vegetatively propagated seedlings increased with increasing latitude for all species except C. micranthum, for which a clear decreasing trend was observed. The relative importance of the different regeneration mechanisms varied among species: seedling sprouts were important for A. leiocarpa, C. aculeatum and C. nigricans, coppice for C. micranthum and sucker for P. suberosa
  • ? The significant interaction observed between species and latitudinal position highlights the importance of accurate species-site matching to ensure successful restoration of degraded areas in the Sahelo-Sudanian zone. Inter-species differences in regeneration mechanism could be related to their biology and ecological adaptation to the site-specific biotic and abiotic factors.

The contribution of species providing non-timber forest products to the livelihoods of local communities is well established. However, this contribution may be limited by the existence of confusion while dealing with close relative species. This is particularly the case for Detarium microcarpum Guill & Perr. and D. senegalense J.F.Gmel. The objectives of this study were to (1) identify the criteria used by local communities to differentiate D. microcarpum and D. senegalense, (2) determine local communities’ perception of the past dynamics of the two species and (3) assess the diversity of uses of both species. Data on differentiation criteria, perceived variation in the species abundance, and the different uses were collected using individual semi-structured interviews (n?=?914 informants). The relative frequency of citation and the use-value were calculated. The Chi-square test, correspondence analysis and generalized linear model were used for statistical analyses. Informants used fourteen criteria to differentiate the two species. The predominant criteria were the shape of the seed (87.86%) and the shape of the fruit (67.86%). Most of the informants reported that the populations of D. microcarpum (61.80%) and that of D. senegalense (60.12%) have regressed. In total, 168 use-reports were enumerated for the two species with 19 shared use-reports. We concluded that local communities use a variety of criteria to differentiate both species, the most popular being morphological traits of the fruits. Both species shared several use-reports (11.31%). However, their populations have declined. The documented uses for both species provide preliminary information for their future food uses and drug discovery.

  • ? Sustainability of Eucalyptus plantations is often questioned in resource-limited environments, especially in areas characterized by soils with poor nutrient and water holding capacities. Yet, field-based observations of fine root dynamics in relation with the seasonality of rainfall are lacking.
  • ? This study was undertaken on two Eucalyptus stands planted in the Kouilou Region (south-western Congo), which is characterized by a four-month-long dry season. Fine root (less than 2 mm in diameter) dynamics were studied using rhizotron observations of root elongation in the field.
  • ? Fine root elongation rates displayed a seasonal variation in the two stands, with higher elongation rates during the rainy season than during the dry season. Positive and significant correlations were found between fine root elongation rates and soil water content at all depths, but a better correlation was found with soil water content in the deep soil horizon than in the superficial horizons.
  • ? These results suggest that the temporal variations in fine root elongation were related to the seasonality of rainfall, and they were probably associated with seasonal changes in tree water status, carbon assimilation and belowground allocation.

Shifting agriculture, fire, and over exploitation of wood and copal resin are the major causes of Guibourtia copallifera Benn. vulnerability in the south-west of Burkina Faso. Conservation of endangered species requires a thorough understanding of the dynamics of small populations. In the present study, we investigated the diversity and the dynamics of G. copallifera communities in two different types of land use history, a protected area (stated forest of Comoé-Leraba) and an unprotected area (the woodlands of Tourni and Timba). A total of 17 rectangular plots (50 m × 20 m) were sampled in both protected and unprotected areas. All woody species were systematically identified, measured and classified into diameter and height classes. In the two different types of land use, the dynamics of G. copallifera’s communities were good, and the diversities were similar and low with high β diversity.  相似文献

Browse shrubs and trees, in spite of their significant role in livestock production in arid and semi-arid zones, are often omitted from pasture potential assessments because of the lack of methodology, the difficulty in calculation or method application and because it is usually a long and tedious task. For an accurate estimation of the carrying capacity of rangelands the shrub and tree fodder component has to be taken into account in order to avoid under estimation of the potential phytomass available for browsing. In this study, a semi-destructive method was used to develop fodder prediction equations of seven shrub and tree species based on multiple explanatory variables at four different locations in Burkina Faso (Taffogo, Safané, Nobéré, Dano and Sokouraba). The physical characteristics (explanatory variables) and the leaf weight (response variable) of the plants were measured or calculated and the non collinear explanatory variables correlated with the response variable. More than 50 % of the observed variation in fodder was explained by the basal area and/or the crown cover for all the target species except Ficus sur at Sokouraba and both Acacia seyal and Balanites aegyptiaca at Safané. The prediction equations were species-specific and equations developed for the same species in different sites were different. These results suggest that many local species-specific fodder prediction equations have to be developed to get an accurate fodder prediction in a large scale, and practitioners of rangelands management may be cautious about applying general species-specific prediction equation tables.  相似文献
