Thyroid scintigraphy is currently the reference standard for diagnosing and staging cats with hyperthyroidism, but few studies describing the scintigraphic characteristics in a large number of cats have been reported. The objective of this study was to better characterize thyroid scintigraphy findings by evaluating 2096 consecutive cats with hyperthyroidism that were referred over a 3.5‐year period. Of these cats, 2068 (98.7%) had a high thyroid‐to‐salivary ratio (>1.5), whereas 2014 (96.1%) were found to have a high thyroid‐to‐background ratio (>6.1). When the patterns of the cats’ thyroid disease were recorded, 665 (31.7%) had unilateral disease, 1060 (50.6%) had bilateral‐asymmetric disease (two thyroid lobes unequal in size), 257 (12.3%) had bilateral‐symmetric disease (both lobes similar in size), and 81 (3.9%) had multifocal disease (≥3 areas of increased radionuclide uptake). The number of areas of 99mTcO?4 uptake in the 2096 cats ranged from 1 to 6 (median, 2), located in the cervical area in 2057 (98.1%), thoracic inlet in 282 (13.5%), and in the thoracic cavity in 115 (5.5%). Ectopic thyroid tissue (e.g. lingual or mediastinal) was diagnosed in 81 (3.9%) cats, whereas thyroid carcinoma was suspected in 35 (1.7%) of the cats. The results of this study support conclusions that most hyperthyroid cats have unilateral or bilateral thyroid nodules, but that multifocal disease will develop in a few cats that have ectopic thyroid disease or thyroid carcinoma. Both ectopic thyroid disease and thyroid carcinoma are relatively uncommon in hyperthyroid cats, with a respective prevalence of ~4% and ~2% in this study. 相似文献
Relative abundance of many shark species in the Atlantic is assessed by compiling data from several independently conducted, but somewhat spatially limited surveys. Although these localized surveys annually sample the same populations, resulting trends in yearly indices often conflict with one another, thereby hindering interpretation of abundance patterns at broad spatial scales. We used delta‐lognormal generalized linear models (GLMs) to generate indices of abundance for seven Atlantic coastal shark species from six fishery‐independent surveys along the US east coast and Gulf of Mexico from 1975 to 2014. These indices were further analysed using dynamic factor analysis (DFA) to produce simplified, broad‐scale common trends in relative abundance over the entire sampled distribution. Effects of drivers including the North Atlantic Oscillation index, the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation index, annually averaged sea surface temperature and species landings were evaluated within the DFA model. The two decadal oscillations and species landings were shown to affect shark distribution along south‐east US coast. Estimated common trends of relative abundance for all large coastal shark species showed similar decreasing patterns into the early 1990s, periods of sustained low index values thereafter and recent indications of recovery. Small coastal shark species exhibited more regional variability in their estimated common trends, such that two common trends were required to adequately describe patterns in relative abundance throughout the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic. Overall, all species’ (except the Gulf of Mexico blacknose shark) time series concluded with an increasing trend, suggestive of initial recovery from past exploitation. 相似文献
Abutilon theophrasti is a weed that is spreading worldwide and that has had to adapt to different combinations of environmental conditions. Wide interpopulation variability has been reported regarding dormancy and germination. This variability, controlled by the interaction of genetic diversity and maternal effect, could hinder the adoption of Integrated Weed Management (IWM) tools. A collaborative project was conducted to compare emergence dynamics of 12 European and North American populations under diverse environmental conditions. The main aim was to assess interpopulation variability and explain this according to environmental conditions in the seed collection sites. Seeds were sown at six experimental sites, and seedling emergence was monitored. The AlertInf model was tested to evaluate its ability to predict emergence dynamics of the different populations. A wide interpopulation variability was observed for emergence percentage and dynamics with consistent trends across sites and related to different seed dormancy levels. Populations from Catalonia, Iowa and Minnesota reached higher emergence percentage with earlier and concentrated emergence flushes probably due to low dormancy level, while populations from Croatia, Serbia and Hungary, given their low average emergence percentage, presented high dormancy levels. Good predictive accuracy of AlertInf model was obtained at the different sites, confirming the possibility of adopting it across a wide range of environmental conditions. Achieving a better knowledge of interpopulation variability can allow specific control strategies to be designed, facilitating the replacement of solely herbicide‐based management with true IWM. 相似文献
The influence of epicatechin (EC) on off-flavor development in low-heat skim milk powder samples during processing and storage was investigated. Milk powder samples were prepared from a concentrated skim milk (control) plus a concentrated skim milk with EC (treatment). Volatile extracts of the powders were analyzed by aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA) at 0 days and after 17 months of storage in conjunction with sensory analysis of the flavor attributes. The treatment milk powders with EC added prior to drying reported a reduction in the formation of three main compounds, 4-hydroxy-2,5-dimethyl-3-(2H)-furanone, o-aminoacetophenone, and furfural, by 8-, 4-, and 4-fold for the 0 day old samples, while for the 17 month aged samples o-aminoacetophenone was the major compound reduced in formation by 8-fold, respectively, based on the flavor dilution factors reported. The sensory evaluations indicated that the treatment milk powders for 0 day old and 17 month aged samples were statistically lower (alpha = 0.05) in stale flavor intensity in comparison to the respective control samples, while no differences were noted in bitterness intensity. 相似文献
A reconnaissance survey was made of trace metals in surface waters and three aquatic bryophytes (Scapania undulata,Hygrohypnum luridum andPolytrichum commune) in the mid-Wales Ag-Pb mining district. This area is contaminated by heavy metals from past mining. Elevated levels of Ag, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn were found in water and plant tissue. All the plants accumulated Ag and the other metals butScapania appears the most suitable as a plant monitor of Ag-polluted waters. 相似文献
Live adult brine shrimp, Artemia franciscana (Latreille), were enriched with erythromycin to determine if Artemia could accumulate therapeutic levels for subsequent feeding to young fish. Three trials were conducted to determine the erythromycin incorporation and survival rates of enriched Artemia when fed either liposomes containing erythromycin or various erythromycin suspensions. Erythromycin concentration in Artemia fed a liposome suspension was low (∼ 5 μg mL−1) relative to Artemia fed the direct suspension (> 100 μg mL−1) over the same time period. When enriched with suspensions up to 1 g erythromycin L−1 sea water for 14 h, Artemia survival was not significantly affected ( P > 0.05) relative to controls. Using a suspension of 1 g L−1, tissue erythromycin concentrations of 109 ± 16 μg erythromycin mL−1 Artemia homogenate (mean ± SEM) were achieved after 12 h. Concentrations above 170 μg mL−1 were obtained using suspensions of 2–5 g L−1, but Artemia survival significantly ( P < 0.05) decreased. 相似文献
In contaminated streams, understanding the role of streambank and streambed source contributions is essential to developing robust remedial solutions. However, identifying relationships can be difficult because of the lack of identifying signatures in source and receptor pools. East Fork Poplar Creek (EFPC) in Oak Ridge, TN, USA received historical industrial releases of mercury that contaminated streambank soils and sediments. Here, we determined relationships between the contaminated streambank soils and sand-sized streambed sediments.
Materials and methods
Field surveys revealed the spatial trends of the concentrations of inorganic total mercury (Hg) and methyl mercury (MeHg), Hg lability as inferred by sequential extraction, particle size distribution, and total organic carbon. Statistical tests were applied to determine relationships between streambank soil and streambed sediment properties.
Results and discussion
Concentrations of Hg in streambank soils in the upper reaches averaged 206 mg kg?1 (all as dry weight) (n?=?457), and 13 mg kg?1 in lower reaches (n?=?321), while sand-sized streambed sediments were approximately 16 mg kg?1 (n?=?57). Two areas of much higher Hg and MeHg concentrations in streambank soils were identified and related to localized higher Hg concentrations in the streambed sediments; however, most of the streambank soils have similar Hg concentrations to the streambed sediments. The molar ratio of Hg to organic carbon, correlation between MeHg and Hg, and particle size distributions suggested similarity between the streambank soils and the fine sand-sized fraction (125–250 μm) collected from the streambed sediments. Mercury in the fine sand-sized streambed sediments, however, was more labile than Hg in the streambank soils, suggesting an in-stream environment that altered the geochemistry of sediment-bound Hg.
Conclusions
This study revealed major source areas of Hg in streambank soils, identified possible depositional locations in streambed sediments, and highlighted potential differences in the stability of Hg bound to streambank soils and sediments. This work will guide future remedial decision making in EFPC and will aid other researchers in identifying source–sink linkages in contaminated fluvial systems.
In the single decrement life table, an individual exits the table in only one way: through death undifferentiated by cause. In the multiple decrement life table (MDLT), an individual can exit the table through differentiated causes of death. Because of its structure, numerous calculations of demographic importance can be produced from the data in the MDLT, including estimates of the probability of death in the presence or absence of a combination of causes. Producing these life tables using manual calculations can be tedious and time consuming. Therefore, we present here a spreadsheet program, M-DEC, which automatically calculates many of the demographic variables in the MDLT for use with insects. 相似文献
