A knowledge of the nutrient dynamics that occur with land use changes, e.g., in clearing forests for farmland, is useful in choosing the most efficient soil and fertilizer management practices. To determine net in situ P and N mineralization and nitrification rates of forest floor materials and their nutrient value for agricultural crops, plastic bags containing different materials (moss, O horizon, and A horizon) collected from a subarctic black spruce (Picea mariana Mill.) forest were incubated for 2 years in their respective forest horizons and at 7.5 cm depth in a nearby fallow field. Net amounts of P and N mineralized were highest in moss and were similar in forest and field when the temperature and moisture content were similar, but smaller in forest when the water content was higher. Net nitrification was negligible in O and A horizon material but significant in moss during the 2nd year, occurring sooner and producing higher NO inf3 sup- levels in the field (171 mg ha-1) than in the forest (13 mg ha-1). Moss P and N mineralization rates were correlated in the fallow field. Temperature, moisture content, and substrate quality were important factors controlling P and N dynamics of forest floor materials in a subarctic fallow field and native forest. In subarctic regions, incorporation and mineralization of forest floor materials could provide an early source of N and P (70 and 17 kg ha-1, respectively) for succeeding agricultural crops.  相似文献

The soils of the Antarctic dry valleys are exposed to extremely dry and cold conditions. Nevertheless, they contain small communities of micro-organisms that contribute to the biogeochemical transformations of the bioelements, albeit at slow rates. We have determined the dehydrogenase, β-glucosidase, acid and alkaline phosphatase and arylsulphatase activities and the rates of respiration (CO2 production) in laboratory assays of soils collected from a field experiment in an Antarctic dry valley. The objective of the field experiment was to test the responses of the soil microbial community to additions of C and N in simple (glucose and NH4Cl) and complex forms (glycine and lacustrine detritus from the adjacent lake comprising principally cyanobacterial necromass). The soil samples were taken 3 years after the experimental treatments had been applied. In unamended soil, all enzyme activities and respiration were detected indicating that the enzymatic capacity to mineralize organic C, P and S compounds existed in the soil, despite the very low organic matter content. Relative to the control (unamended soil), respiration was significantly increased by all the experimental additions of C and N except the smallest NH4Cl addition (1 mg N g−1 soil) and the smallest detritus addition (1.5 mg C g−1 soil and 0.13 mg N g−1 soil). The activities of all enzymes except dehydrogenase were increased by C and combined large C (10 mg C g−1 soil) and N additions, but either unchanged or diminished by addition of either N only or N (up to 10 mg N g−1 soil) with only small C (1 mg C g−1 soil) additions in the form of glucose and NH4Cl. This suggests that in the presence of a large amount of N, the C supply for enzyme biosynthesis was limited. When normalized with respect to soil respiration, only arylsulphatase per unit of respiration showed a significant increase with C and N additions as glucose and NH4Cl, consistent with S limitation when C and N limitations have been alleviated. Based on the positive responses of enzyme activity, detritus appeared to provide either conditions or resources which led to a larger biological response than a similar amount of C and more N added in the form of defined compounds (glucose, NH4Cl or glycine). Assessment of the soil microbial community by ester-linked fatty acid (ELFA) analysis provided no evidence of changes in the community structure as a result of the C and N supplementation treatments. Thus the respiration and enzyme activity responses to supplementation occurred in an apparently structurally stable or unresponsive microbial community.  相似文献

Mice inoculated intranasally with murine coronaviruses (mouse hepatitis viruses) were killed daily for seven days. Lung and liver sections stained by the immunoperoxidase technique indicated that with three of the four strains examined viral localisation and replication in the lung preceded that found in the liver. We measured soil profile concentrations and emission of CO2, CH4 and N2O from soils along a lakeshore in Garwood Valley, Antarctica, to assess the extent and biogeochemical significance of biogenic gas emission to C and N cycling processes. Simultaneous emission of all three gases from the same site indicated that aerobic and anaerobic processes occurred in different layers or different parts of each soil profile. The day and location of high gas concentrations in the soil profile corresponded to those having high gas emission, but the pattern of concentration with depth in the soil profile was not consistent across sites. That the highest gas concentrations were not always in the deepest soil layer suggests either limited production or gas diffusion in the deeper layers. Emission of CO2 was as high as 47 μmol m−2 min−1 and was strongly related to soil temperature. Soil respiration differed significantly according to location on the lakeshore, suggesting that factors other than environmental variables, such as the amount and availability of O2 and nutrients, play an important role in C mineralization processes in these soils. High surface emission (maximum: 15 μmol m−2 min−1) and profile gas concentration (maximum: 5780 μL L−1) of CH4 were at levels comparable to those in resource-rich temperate ecosystems, indicating an active indigenous population of methanogenic organisms. Emission of N2O was low and highly variable, but the presence of this gas and NO3 in some of the soils suggest that denitrification and nitrification occur there. No significant relationships between N2O emission and environmental variables were found. It appears that considerable C and N turnover occurs in the lakeshore soils, and accurate accounting will require measurements of aerobic and anaerobic mineralization. The production and emission of biogenic gases confirm the importance of these soils as hotspots of biological activity in the dry valleys and probable reservoirs of biological diversity.  相似文献

Historical processes may have longer lasting effects in arid forest and woodlands because of slow rates of succession. We investigated the influence of historical tree harvesting upon contemporary spatial dynamics of pinyon-juniper woodland in the western United States. Despite intensive and widespread harvesting of woodland by the charcoal industry during the late 19th century, the role of afforestation has seldom been addressed as a potential mechanism for the dramatic expansion of pinyon-juniper woodlands over the past century. Spatial models of disturbance processes are one way to ascertain effects of such historical influences. We developed a process-based spatial model to estimate the historical tree harvest pressure according to a parsimonious set of rules and constraints. The model used a convection-diffusion approach that incorporated the influences of topography, transportation, and mining production. We used a combination of field-surveyed, archaeological, historical, and GIS data sets to calibrate, validate, and compare the alternative mathematical models. Model results were consistent with the historical harvest evidence (AUC > 0.66), with high harvest intensity closer to the mining districts, quickly decreasing at the maximum distance of influence. Performance was improved by including the local terrain. Harvesting initially showed radial patterns emanating from the significant mining districts, and then gradually expanded northward with development of the railway system. Our spatial modeling approach provides a means to assess the pattern and magnitude of historical tree harvesting in semi-arid woodlands. The general approach can be applied to explore the importance of other historical disturbance and cultural processes, whose effects may no longer be evident, in forests and woodlands worldwide.  相似文献
