Research has shown the occurrence of the hormesis effect in some upland rice cultures resulting from low-dose application of glyphosate. Glyphosate herbicide is widely used in Brazilian agriculture for controlling the large quantity of weeds. The aim of this work was to verify the effects of low-dose application of glyphosate herbicide on agronomic characteristics in upland rice. The experimental design used was randomized blocks comprising five low-dose applications of glyphosate herbicide (10, 20, 40, 70, and 100?g acid equivalent [a.e.] ha?1) and the control, in two stages of development of the rice culture (tillering [V4] and floral differentiation [R1]) with four repetitions. The agronomic traits of upland rice were evaluated. Data were subjected to variance analysis, polynomial regression analysis for the quantitative factor, and Tukey’s test for the qualitative factor at p?<?0.05. The grain yield and the number of spikelets per panicle increased with the application of 10?g a.e. ha?1 of glyphosate at the floral differentiation stage. Until the low dose of 75?g a.e. ha?1, there was an increase in the number of panicles. Low doses between 70 and 100?g a.e. ha?1 applied in R1 provided less spikelets per panicle, lower 100-grain weight, and lower grain yield. The leaf flavonoid content increased due to the increase in the low doses of glyphosate herbicide.

Diversity of insect communities can be used as bioindicators for change in the environment especially in farms under different management systems. In line with that, we conducted a research on insect species associated with cocoa under organic and conventional management systems in the Eastern and Central regions of Ghana. Insect collection was done using Hand height visual count, Canopy, and “Knock down”, pitfall, coloured bowl and fruit-baited traps. A total of 13,742 individual insects belonging to 138 species from 63 families and 12 orders were recorded in the study. Insect abundance and diversity were generally higher in organic farms compared to conventional farms with Oecophylla longinoda as the most dominant species in both management systems and especially more dominant in organic cocoa farms. Our study revealed that most of the insect species recorded were known cocoa pests although there was high abundance of beneficial insects too. Some of the pest species were Planococoides njalensis, Salhbergella singularis, Helopeltis spp and Pseudococus spp, while some of the beneficial insects recorded were Pheidole spp, Tegenaria spp, Camponotus spp, Crematogaster spp. We can conclude that cocoa farms are potential habitats for insect biodiversity conservation. We recommend that management and/or agronomic practices used in cocoa farms should be geared towards protecting beneficial organisms for instance pollinators and natural enemies by effectively suppressing insect pest populations while enhancing good seed production.

The occurrence of entomopathogenic nematodes(EPNs) in arable soil samples from Nigeria was investigated using Baermann extraction tray and insect-bait(White's trap) techniques. Isolates were tested for infectivity using the larvae of Galleria mellonella(greater moth) and Tenebrio molitor(mealworm). The study revealed a new species of Heterorhabditis(MT371593) in soil samples that were randomly collected from an arable farmland cultivated with cassava TMS-30572 at the Teaching and Research Farm of Landmark University, Nigeria. Amplification of the internal transcribed spacer region(ITS) of the ribosomal DNA produced a nucleotide sequence of 933 base pairs(bp). A BLASTN search of Gen Bank showed that the sequence of the Nigerian isolate is identical at 99% similarity to that of Heterorhabditis sp. from Thailand. Infectivity test of the isolate showed 100% mortality against T. molitor larvae within 48 h of exposure while only 80% mortality was recorded for G. mellonella after 1 week of exposure. This is the first account of Heterorhabditis sp. in Nigeria. The varying degrees of infectivity against mealworm and greater moth observed in this study proved that the Nigerian isolate of Heterorhabditis sp. could potentially be an attractive option in the management of insect pests of cash crops.  相似文献

A kernel screening assay (KSA) was used to assess the genetic and environmental effects on the vulnerability of maize to aflatoxin accumulation. Kernels of 26 inbred lines that had been grown in seven environments, and 190 lines of the Intermated B73xMo17 (IBM) population grown in one location in the United States, were inoculated with a toxigenic strain of A. flavus and incubated in the dark at 30°C for 6 days. Percent kernel colonization (PKC), sporulation and aflatoxin were influenced by the maize genotypes (G), the location (“ear environment” or E) and the GxE interactions. Overall, low broad‐sense heritabilities were observed for PKC, sporulation and aflatoxin. PKC was significantly correlated with sporulation in all environments. Aflatoxin was positively correlated with colonization for two and with sporulation for all ear environments. Higher grain sulphur or magnesium in IBM was associated with less colonization or aflatoxin. Postharvest susceptibility of maize to aflatoxin is thus influenced by factors that are modulated by the ear environment. In a KSA, sporulation could be a proxy test for aflatoxin accumulation.  相似文献

Compromised lung function is a feature of both infection driven and non-infective pathologies. Viral infections—including the current pandemic strain SARS-CoV-2—that affect lung function can cause both acute and long-term chronic damage. SARS-CoV-2 infection suppresses innate immunity and promotes an inflammatory response. Targeting these aspects of SARS-CoV-2 is important as the pandemic affects greater proportions of the population. In clinical and animal studies, fucoidans have been shown to increase innate immunity and decrease inflammation. In addition, dietary fucoidan has been shown to attenuate pulmonary damage in a model of acute viral infection. Direct inhibition of SARS-CoV-2 in vitro has been described, but is not universal. This short review summarizes the current research on fucoidan with regard to viral lung infections and lung damage.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effectiveness of chemical control for eradicating eucalyptus sprouts using images obtained with Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The study was carried out in eucalyptus plantations in Itabela, BA, in replanting areas during pre-planting application of herbicide. Aerial images obtained by a UAV were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the herbicide application for sprouts control. After the images were acquired, they were processed to calculate the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and submitted to a supervised classification to quantify the percentage reduction of sprout green matter. The percentage data were submitted to analysis of variance and the means were compared by Tukey test at 5%. The differences, both visual and average percentages were observed only during the evaluation period with no evident effect of the treatments on sprout control. The images provided by the UAV allowed to monitor and identify visually the plots where biomass reduced or increased and to evaluate the effectiveness of chemical control of eucalyptus sprouts, indicating areas where it was nonexistent, partial or total.  相似文献

Purpose

Soil temperature is a fundamental parameter affecting not only microbial activity but also manganese (MnIII,IV) and iron (FeIII) oxide reduction rates. The relationship between MnIII,IV oxide removal from oxide-coated redox bars is missing at present. This study investigated the effect of variable soil temperatures on oxide removal by MnIII,IV and FeIII oxide-coated redox bars in water-saturated soil columns in the laboratory.

Materials and methods

The Mn coatings contained the mineral birnessite, whereas the Fe coatings contained a mixture of ferrihydrite and goethite. Additionally, platinum (Pt) electrodes designed to measure the redox potential (EH) were installed in the soil columns, which were filled with either a humic topsoil with an organic carbon (Corg) content of 85 g kg?1 (pH 5.8) or a subsoil containing 2 g Corg kg?1 (pH 7.5). Experiments were performed at 5, 15, and 25 °C.

Results and discussion

Although elevated soil temperatures accelerated the decrease in EH after water saturation in the topsoil, no EH decreases regardless of soil temperature occurred in the subsoil. Besides soil temperature, the importance of soil organic matter as an electron donor is highlighted in this case. Complete removal of the MnIII,IV oxide coating was observed after 28, 14, and 7 days in the soil columns filled with topsoil at 5, 15, and 25 °C, respectively. Along the Fe redox bars, FeIII reducing conditions first appeared at 15 °C and oxide removal was enhanced at 25 °C because of lower EH, with the preferential dissolution of ferrihydrite over goethite as revealed by visual differences in the FeIII oxide coating. Oxide removal along redox bars followed the thermodynamics of the applied minerals in the order birnessite > ferrihydrite > goethite.

Conclusions

In line with Van’t Hoff’s rule, turnover rates of MnIII,IV and FeIII oxide reduction increased as a result of increased soil temperatures. Taking into account the stability lines of the designated minerals, EH-pH conditions were in accordance with oxide removal. Soil temperature must therefore be considered a master variable when evaluating the oxide removal of redox bars employed for the monitoring of soil redox status.
