Acid neutralizing capacities (ANC) of sediments from McCloud Lake, Florida and seven other lakes in Wisconsin and Florida were as high as 10 meq 100 g?1 over the pH range 4.5 to 5.5 in well-mixed batch experiments. Exchange of Ca2+ and Mg2+ accounted for over 50% of the neutralizing capacity; Al solubilization and sulfate adsorption were unimportant in neutralizing H+ additions. ANC was correlated with sediment volatile solids content. Sulfate reduction occurred in microcosms that simulated lake-water interactions and subsurface seepage;in situ pore water profiles and a whole-lake mass balance confirm the occurrence of this process in McCloud Lake. Sediment neutralization is important for lakes that receive most of their water from precipitation and thus are particularly susceptible to acidification.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the effect of donor breed on pronuclear‐stage embryo yield to be used for DNA microinjection in a transgenesis goat program. Twelve Canindé and twelve Saanen goats were heat synchronized using a progestagen‐cloprostenol treatment. Forty‐eight hours before the sponge removal, superovulation was induced with a total administration of 4.4 mg/kg bodyweight NIH‐FSH‐P1, given twice daily in decreasing doses over 3 days. In addition, goats received 100 μg of GnRH and they were hand‐mated at 36 and 48 h after progestagen removal. Embryo recovery was performed by oviduct flushing at 72 h after sponge removal. Embryos were microinjected with a DNA construct and noticeable swelling of the nuclei was the criterion for successful microinjection. The total diameter, cytoplasm diameter, zona pellucida thickness and pronuclei diameter were measured for each microinjected embryo. A higher (p < 0.05) percentage of fertilized ova was observed in Canindé (89.9%) than Saanen (36.2%) goats. In addition, Canindé donors produced a higher percentage of pronuclear embryos when compared with Saanen: 72.5% vs 20.6% (p < 0.05), respectively. Successful microinjection was verified in 96.7% and 73.3% of times in Canindé and Saanen embryos, respectively (p < 0.05). Significant differences were observed for all morphometric parameters except for cytoplasm diameter. In conclusion, under our study experimental conditions, Canindé were more efficient than Saanen goats concerning the pronuclear embryo yield and manipulation. The use of Canindé goats in transgenesis programs could be increase the interest in their breeding and could be contribute to saving them from extinction.  相似文献

Abstract  The effects of an extreme flash flood on the native fish assemblages across a Mediterranean catchment in Southwest Portugal were investigated. The fish community structure and habitat were surveyed at 10 sites pre- and post-flood. Overall species richness and rank abundances changed little after the flood, despite there being a consistent decline in the abundance of small cyprinids. Pre- and post-flood habitat correlates of abundance changed for at least some species, and variability in assemblage structure was associated with flood, depth and pH. These results indicate that extreme floods occurring early in the wet season may have little disruptive effects on the overall structure of native fish assemblages in Mediterranean streams, although may at least partially influence population dynamics for some species. Habitat quality and complexity are likely to play a role in mediating species responses to flooding.  相似文献

White-clawed crayfish, Austropotamobius pallipes, were endemic to the Nant watershed, Ardéche, France, until they were extirpated by epizootic mortality at the beginning of the twentieth century. A. pallipes were successfully reintroduced to the Nant watershed in the middle of the twentieth century. However, epizootic mortality was observed in the Nant watershed in the summer of 2000 during which time A. pallipes was extirpated from downstream regions. Dead and moribund crayfish were again detected in several episodes in summer 2001 and by October the range of A. pallipes was reduced to the headwaters of just one of the three streams in the watershed. Water quality for the watershed in summer 2001 was appropriate for crayfish habitation. Bacteriology and mycology on A. pallipes collected during several of the mortality episodes in 2001 failed to reveal a cause. However, histopathology revealed a high occurrence of intranuclear eosinophilic inclusions in hepatopancreatocytes of A. pallipes . The nuclei were hypertrophic and contained bacilliform virions consisting of a cylindrical nucleocapsid surrounded by a trilaminar envelope. Virions in section were approximately 63 × 258 nm and nucleocapsids were approximately 52 × 225 nm. It is unclear whether the intranuclear bacilliform virus was the cause of the mortality episodes or was a contributor to a disease complex involving one or several other undetected pathogens.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to determine the role of estrogens on endogenous PGF2 alpha secretion and luteolysis following injection of cloprostenol in heifers. In Exp. 1, eight luteal-phase heifers were used to evaluate tamoxifen (T) as an estrogen antagonist. Heifers received T (35 mg i.v.) or ethanol:saline vehicle (ES) every 4 h for 44 h. All received cloprostenol (500 micrograms i.m.) immediately after the start of T or ES, and received estradiol-17 beta (500 micrograms i.m.) 12 h later. Each ES heifer had a surge of luteinizing hormone (LH) within 48 h of estradiol injection, whereas T-treated heifers did not. Estrus was observed in three ES-treated heifers, but not in T-treated heifers. In Exp. 2, 10 heifers received T (35 mg i.v.) or ES every 4 h for 64 h beginning on d 15 postestrus. Cloprostenol (500 micrograms i.m.) was injected 16 h after the start of treatment. Concentrations of LH were similar (P greater than .05) in both groups. In ES heifers, concentrations of 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGFM) increased; in T-treated heifers, PGFM remained at pre-cloprostenol levels. Luteolysis was induced in all heifers. Progesterone (P4) decreased to less than or equal to 1 ng/ml at similar (P greater than .05) rates in ES-treated and T-treated heifers. Mean concentration of P4 288 h post-cloprostenol was greater (P less than .05) in ES-treated than in T-treated heifers. Three ES-treated heifers, but no T-treated heifers, were in standing estrus. Interactions occurring during the surfactant-enhanced foliar uptake of seven model organic compounds were examined using two homogeneous surfactants, hexaethylene glycol monotridecyl ether (C13E6) and hexadecaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E16). Surfactant–compound and compound–surfactant interactions were detected by measurement of their relative uptake rates following application of c. 0·2 μl droplets of the corresponding radiolabelled formulations. The magnitude of surfactant–compound interaction was found to vary according to the physicochemical properties of both the compound and the surfactant, and was influenced by surfactant concentration and target plant species. Interactive and non-interactive mechanisms, both leading to substantial enhancement of compound uptake, could be identified, but their precise nature could not be elucidated. Although penetration of C13E6 into the site of application appeared to be essential in order to activate the uptake of a compound, substantial absorption of C12E16 was not always required to produce the same effect. The results are discussed in the light of possible sites and modes of action for activator polyoxyethylene surfactant adjuvants.  相似文献

Objective— To report long-term outcome after arthroscopic removal of fragmentation of the extensor process of the distal phalanx in horses.
Study Design— Case series.
Animals— Adult horses (n=13).
Methods— Medical records (2003–2004) of horses that had arthroscopic debridement of fragmentation of the extensor process of the distal phalanx were reviewed. Inclusion criteria included: lameness localized to the foot, fragmentation of the extensor process of the distal phalanx debrided arthroscopically, and a follow-up period of ≥4 years.
Results— Of the 13 horses, lameness was resolved in 11 (85%) initially but distal interphalangeal joint pain recurred in 2 (15%) within 1 year of surgery. Three (23%) other horses were retired because of lameness at other sites during the follow-up period resulting in 46% (6/13) being not lame and in full work after 4 years. Substantial changes were identified at surgery in the contralateral joint of 7 horses, even when fragments were only present unilaterally.
Conclusions— Arthroscopic debridement of fragmentation of the extensor process of the forelimb distal phalanx has a good short-term prognosis for resolution of lameness and return to work but a more guarded prognosis for long-term soundness.
Clinical Relevance— These results allow for more accurate prognostication preoperatively and may support early debridement of fragmentation of the extensor process of the distal phalanx.  相似文献

Quantum teleportation of optical coherent states was demonstrated experimentally using squeezed-state entanglement. The quantum nature of the achieved teleportation was verified by the experimentally determined fidelity Fexp = 0.58 +/- 0.02, which describes the match between input and output states. A fidelity greater than 0.5 is not possible for coherent states without the use of entanglement. This is the first realization of unconditional quantum teleportation where every state entering the device is actually teleported.  相似文献
