This paper explores the plasticity of sexually dimorphic characters in subadult female Brevimyrus niger, an African weakly electric mormyrid species. Thirty-five fish were exposed in a staggered fashion (five fish a week) to aromatizable 17α-methyltestosterone over a period of 7 weeks; 18 fish served as untreated controls. 17α-MT induced precocious vitellogenesis that mirrored the natural maturational process during seasonal ovarian recrudescence. At the same time, 17α-MT exposure resulted in complete masculinization of the females’ anal fin support structure normally observed during rainy season in adult males. We discuss possible hormonal mechanisms acting along the brain-pituitary-gonad axis that would explain the occurrence of precocious vitellogenesis and the male-typical transformation of the female’s anal fin ray bases. Our findings are relevant to commercial aquaculture as the use of 17α-MT in fish hatcheries can pose serious environmental issues.  相似文献

  1. This study reports the first known record of breeding of the Critically Endangered Twee River redfin ‘Pseudobarbuserubescens in an artificial impoundment. This followed an introduction of 48 individuals into a 10 ha impoundment within the species' native range more than a decade ago.
  2. Sampling the impoundment using three fyke nets set overnight yielded 2838 P. erubescens, which included both juveniles and adults capable of spawning. Fork length measurements of a subsample of 250 individuals ranged from 29 to 125 mm with length cohorts indicating multiple spawning events.
  3. This demonstrates that this species can successfully reproduce in lentic environments and suggests that artificial impoundments could be stocked to provide refugia for P. erubescens and other highly threatened small cyprinids while conservation strategies are developed to mitigate against habitat loss resulting from alien fish invasions, increased human use of water, and from climate change in rivers.

Precise and accurate patient positioning is necessary when doing stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) to ensure adequate dosing to the tumor and sparing of normal tissues. This prospective cross‐sectional study aimed to assess feasibility of a commercially available modified frameless SRS positioning system for use in veterinary radiotherapy patients with brain tumors. Fifty‐one dogs and 12 cats were enrolled. Baseline and verification CT images were acquired. The verification CT images from 32 dogs and five cats had sufficient images for fusion to baseline CT images. A rigid box‐based fusion was performed to determine interfraction motion. Forty‐eight dogs and 11 cats were assessed for intrafraction motion by cine CT. Seventy percent of dogs and 60% of cats had interfraction 3D vector translational shifts >1 mm, with mean values of 1.9 mm in dogs, and 1.8 mm in cats. In dogs muscle wasting was weakly correlated with translational shifts. The maximum angular interfraction motion observed was 6.3° (roll), 3.5° (pitch), and 3.3° (yaw). There was no correlation between angular interfraction motion and weight, brachycephaly, or muscle wasting. Fifty‐seven percent of dogs and 50% of cats had respiration‐related intrafraction motion. Of these, 4.5% of dogs and 10% of cats had intrafraction motion >1 mm. This study demonstrates the modified Brainlab system is feasible for SRS in dogs and cats. The smaller cranial size and difference in anatomy increases setup uncertainty in some animals beyond limits usually accepted in SRS. Image‐guided positioning is recommended to achieve clinically acceptable setup accuracy (<1 mm) for SRS.  相似文献

  1. Predictive species distribution models (SDMs) have become powerful tools to determine habitat use patterns of mobile marine predators and their spatial overlap with potentially impacting anthropogenic activities.
  2. This study used SDMs to investigate fine‐scale habitat use patterns of two poorly known and broadly sympatric coastal delphinids, Chilean dolphins (Cephalorhynchus eutropia) and Peale's dolphins (Lagenorhynchus australis), and their spatial interactions with intense aquaculture farming activities in the Chiloé archipelago, southern Chile.
  3. A long‐term dataset (2002–2012) of boat‐based dolphin sightings and concurrently in situ collected environmental and anthropogenic variables was analysed using binomial Generalized Additive Models to investigate ecological drivers of each species' fine‐scale distribution and to predict dolphin occurrence spatially.
  4. Chilean dolphins preferred shallow (<30 m deep), turbid waters, close to shore (<500 m) and river mouths which often placed them in sheltered bays and channels used intensively by shellfish farms. Peale's dolphins were also found in shallow waters but occurred over a wider range of conditions along more open or exposed coastlines. Both species had to navigate extensive salmon and shellfish farming sites to transit between areas of important habitat.
  5. Sightings and predicted occurrence maps showed a clear pattern of spatial habitat partitioning between species, which remained stable across the 11 year study period. The identification of important habitat for Chilean dolphins warrants the consideration of spatially explicit conservation measures to limit the potential effects of overlapping salmon and shellfish farming.
  6. The observed differences in ecological plasticity of the two sympatric species should be considered when evaluating and mitigating the effects of environmental change and ongoing anthropogenic pressures on their nearshore habitat. The estimated species–environment relationships could also be used to predict where dolphin habitat and anthropogenic activities are most likely to overlap in other parts of the species' ranges.

  • ? The aim of this work was to examine the anatomy and functioning of secondary xylem in stems in relation to the decline of European ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.).

The width of annual wood increments, the diameter and density of earlywood vessels were measured and the theoretical hydraulic conductivity index through the secondary xylem calculated by application of Hagen-Poisseuille’s formula.

    It is well documented that synthetic chlorinated hydrocarbon residues are widespread throughout the world ecosystem. Recently serious contamination of the Kupa River in Slovenia resulting from improper disposal of the waste disharged by an electro-capacitor manufacturing plant was observed. The migration of the PCBs from the waste tip into the karst ground water and source water has been established. PCBs have been also introduced into the small Lahinja River a tributary of the Kupa. Consequently, these pollutants have been detected in the Kupa river. An investigation of the levels of chlorinated hydrocarbons in tap water, water and fish samples collected from 1985 to 1988 from the Kupa River in the region of Petrinja and Sisak was performed. This region is about 200 km downstream of the primary contamined area. Concentrations of chlorinated insecticides and polychlorinated biphenyls in tap water ranged from <0.2 to 5.0 ng dm?3 for PCBs such as Aroclor 1254 and from <0.4 to 10.4 ng dm?3 for PCBs such as Pyralene 1500. In the Kupa River, water samples were found with PCBs such as Aroclor 1254 from <1.5 to 5.0 and from <2.6 to 104 ng dm?3 for PCBs such as Pyralene 1500. The level of the investigated chlorinated insecticides were under the sensitivity limits of 0.05 for dieldrin and 0.1 ng dm?3 for DDTs. Concentrations of chlorinated insecticides and polychlorinated biphenyls in the fish samples were several orders of magnitude higher in comparison with the water samples and ranged from the sensitivity limit for dieldrin (<0.0001) to 0.0034 mg kg?1; p,p'DDT from 0.0003 to 0.0076 mg kg?1; p,p'DDE from 0.0004 to 0.1752 mg kg?1; p,p'DDD from 0.0001 to 0.0201 mg kg?1 wet weight. Concentrations of PCBs were significantly higher and ranged from 0.015 to 2.742 mg kg?1 wet weight for Pyralene 1500 and from 0.090 to 1.590 mg kg?1 for Aroclor 1254 +Aroclor 1260.  相似文献

    The removal of the cyanobacterial peptide toxin microcystin-LR at 4 and 37 degrees C by six commercial probiotic strains and Lactobacillus plantarum strains IS-10506 and IS-20506 isolated from dadih, Indonesian traditional fermented milk, was assessed in this study. The aim was to evaluate the main factors influencing the viability and metabolic activity of the probiotic strains, as well as their capacity to remove microcystin-LR. Both L. plantarum strains isolated from dadih, as well as Bifidobacterium lactis strains Bb12 and 420, were shown to be more resistant, and >85% remained viable in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solution for 48 h of incubation at either temperature, while the viability of the other four commercial bacteria decreased markedly over time. The effect of glucose on viability and removal of toxin was shown to be a strain-specific and strain-dependent property, but in general, the efficiency of microcystin-LR removal increased when glucose was added to the solution. A maximum removal of 95% was observed for L. plantarum strain IS-20506 (37 degrees C, 10 (11) colony-forming units mL(-1)) with 1-2% glucose supplementation and 75% in PBS alone.  相似文献
