Annual chemical fluxes for ten elements beneath larch and Sitkaspruce are presented for contrasting sites in N.E. Scotlandand mid-Wales. The Scottish site is relatively low altitudewith moderate rainfall and the Welsh site is relatively highaltitude with high rainfall; both sites have low air concentrationsof SO2 and NO2 The data show clear differences in throughfallelement fluxes between larch and Sitka spruce of similar ageand, for the same species, between the two sites. For sea-derivedions and Ca, the trees appear to respond differently to thecontrasting climatic and depositional environments at the twosites; this overrides any consistent differences between speciesfor these elements. Species related differences, consistentat both sites, are apparent for H ion, SO4 and the major nutrients.Larch releases more K and P but retains more inorganic N thanSitka spruce. Beneath larch, the H ion flux is approximatelythree times and the SO4 flux 1.5 times that beneath Sitka spruce,indicating that larch is more acidifying than spruce.  相似文献

Abstract  Experiments were carried out to test the dependence of anatomical hooking location on terminal rig configuration, and identify strategies by which hook ingestion can be minimised to reduce post-release mortality of angled yellowfin bream, Acanthopagrus australis (Günther). Eighty-five anglers targeted yellowfin bream using different designs and sizes of circle and J hooks and recorded technical, environmental and biological data for each landed fish. Considerably fewer fish (16.6 and 8.5%, respectively) ingested hooks than those hooked in the mouth (82.1 and 88.6%), and a greater percentage of J hooks were ingested than circle hooks or a J hook modified with a 15-mm horizontal bar. Irrespective of hook type, the rate of ingestion also declined with increasing hook weight and decreasing fish size. In cage experiments, significantly more hooks baited with natural soft baits (e.g. intestines and cephalopods) were ingested than those baited with artificial baits, crustaceans or teleosts, while in the field fewer hooks were ingested using artificial bait (e.g. bread and pellets) than terrestrial animals, teleosts, crustaceans, teleost or terrestrial animal intestines, cephalopods or polychaetes. Similarly, rigs with floats, short traces or a sinker only on the hook, along with angling in environments with at least some current reduced ingestion. Based on this study, anglers targeting yellowfin bream should be encouraged to use circle or modified J hooks and, regardless of the hook design, the largest hook size possible attached to short traces or a sinker only and hard baits.  相似文献

Following recent observations by Raulund-Rasmussen (1989) implicating A1 contamination of soil solutions isolated by suction-cup samplers, A1 release from porous ceramic cups in acid solutions was investigated. In our studies a flush of Al, followed by a gradual decrease in leaching over successive extractions was observed. The amount of Al released was retarded by the presence of 37 μmol dm?3 of A1 in solution. Gibbsite solubility controls were not observed; all solutions isolated by the cups were undersaturated with respect to amorphous gibbsite. The cups evaluated in this study are appropriate for sampling acidic soil solution, provided they are suitably pretreated and then equilibrated in the field before use.  相似文献

Phenotypic instability of flusilazole sensitivity in Venturia inaequalis   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Sensitivities of 16 monoconidial isolates of Venturia inaequalis to the sterol demethylation inhibitor flusilazole were found to be stable, when cultures which had been successively transferred to inhibitor-free nutrient agar and maintained at 20 C were retested 6 months after isolation. In contrast, with storage of these isolates at 2 C for 7 additional months, phenotypic sensitivities were subject to change. A high degree of phenotypic instability was also observed for 77 representative strains which had been subcultured for 10 months. In both cases, the majority of strains became more sensitive to flusilazole. The frequency and magnitude of these changes were most pronounced for strains with moderate levels of resistance. More than 70% of the strains investigated were collected from wild-type populations, suggesting that the reversion of resistant strains was not related to a process of unstable adaptation but to a high degree of plasticity in the genetic control of sensitivities to sterol demethylation inhibitors.  相似文献

We have used the mass balance approach for calculating nitrogencritical loads (CL(N)) to avoid eutrophication for Sitka spruceplantation forestry in Wales. The various approaches for assigningvalues to the parameters in the mass balance equation are discussedwith particular reference to the soil nitrogen immobilizationvalue. A CL(N) value of 11 kgN ha–1 a–1 was calculatedfor an intensively studied site in Wales of Yield Class 14 ona freely draining acid soil. If this site is assumed to representa typical spruce stand, application of the CL(N) value meansthat 97 per cent of the area of coniferous forest in Wales,which is predominantly Sitka spruce, is currently receivingnitrogen deposition in excess of the CL(N). The area of coniferousforest at risk is reduced to 72 per cent if the proposed empiricalCL(N) for managed acidic coniferous forests to prevent ecologicalchanges (10–20 kgN ha–1 a–1) is applied andto 45 per cent if the empirical CL(N) to prevent nitrogen saturation,nitrate leaching and depletion of soil base cations is applied(10–25kgN ha–1 a–1). Irrespective of the choiceof CL(N) values, the implications of critical load exceedanceneed urgent investigation. Available information at presentindicates that the main known consequence of chronic atmosphericnitrogen deposition to coniferous forest ecosystems is enhancednitrate and associated aluminium leaching to freshwaters. Thereis insufficient information regarding the potential adverseeffects of eutrophication of soils and waters and of impactson tree health and production.  相似文献

The echocardiographic effects of medetomidine and xylazine were evaluated in 6 healthy dogs. Values for echocardiographic variables were significantly different from pre-treatment values after administration of both drugs. The effects of medetomidine were similar to that of xylazine. Because of their cardiac depressant effects, both drugs should be used with care in sick dogs.  相似文献
