Agar blocks colonized by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, causal agent of lettuce drop, were used as inoculum in screening for resistance to this pathogen in the greenhouse.Since the degree of resistance to the pathogen among cultivars varied with the time observed after inoculation, resistance was assessed by the number of days for 50% of the plants of each cultivar to die, as well as the number of plants that died. The cultivars ‘PI (Plant Introduction) 250427’, ‘Taiwan’, ‘PI 251790’, ‘PI 255568’, ‘MSU 73-44’ and ‘Bibb’ were found to have a higher level of resistance to S. sclerotiorum than the cultivar ‘Grand Rapids’ at 12 or 15 days following inoculation.  相似文献

Since 1960, the steppe regions of North Africa have been subject to an increasing desertification, including the degradation of traditional pastures. The initially dominant species(Artemisia herba-alba, Lygeum spartum and Stipa tenacissima) declined and were progressively replaced by other species(Atractylis serratuloides and Salsola vermiculata) that are more tolerant to the new conditions. It is not clear whether these changes are due to anthropogenic reasons or climatic determinism. We have carried out a statistical analysis of the climate to detect putative rainfall changes during the 20~(th) century in the Algerian steppes based on data from 9 meteorological stations, including 2 Saharan stations(El Oued and Touggourt), 3 pre-Saharan stations(Biskra, Laghouat and Ain Sefra) and 4 steppe stations(Djelfa, Saida, Méchéria and El-Bayadh) located in the arid high plains, which represent the bioclimate diversities of the region. Previous studies suggested that significant rainfall changes for the 20~(th) century only had records in the south of the Oran region. Most of the studies, however, looked at restricted territories over limited periods, and did not integrate the rainiest period 2004–2014. Our work is designed to integrate all the longest time series of meteorological data available for the steppe regions of Algeria. Our results confirm the spatial rainfall distribution(significant rainfall changes only recorded in the southwestern region) evidenced by previous studies, and reveal a decreasing rainfall gradient from northeastern to southwestern Algeria. Moreover, the results reveal a trend of significant decrease of rainfall in the southern Oran region, marked by two drought periods in 1980–1985 and 1999–2003. However, with the exception of the southwestern region, rainfall overall has not declined since the beginning of the 20~(th) century. While less marked in other regions, the drought appear to have affected all territories of the Algerian steppe. Consequently, our study implies that the climate was not a leading influence in the on-going degradation of the vegetation cover of steppe landscapes. Such a vegetation evolution thus appears to be have been determined more by human activities than by climate forcing.  相似文献

Developing urbanization, water shortage, watercourse pollution, and demands for more food due to population growth require a more efficient water irrigation and fertilizer application. Retaining nutrients and water in agricultural soils brings about higher crop yields and prevents pollution of water courses. Among different solutions, zeolites, which are environmental friendly, ubiquitous, and inexpensive, have been extensively employed in agricultural activities. These minerals are considered as soil conditioners to improve soil physical and chemical properties including infiltration rate, saturated hydraulic conductivity (K s), water holding capacity (WHC), and cation exchange capacity (CEC). Natural and surface-modified zeolites can efficiently hold water and nutrients including ammonium (NH4 +), nitrate (NO3 ?) and phosphate (PO4 3?), potassium (K+), and sulfate (SO4 2?) in their unique porous structures. Their application as slow-release fertilizers (SRFs) are reported as well. Therefore, zeolite application can improve both water use efficiency (WUE) and nutrient use efficiency (NUE) in agricultural activities and consequently can reduce the potential of surface and groundwater pollution. This review paper summarizes findings in the literature about the impact of zeolite applications on water and nutrient retention in the agriculture. Furthermore, it explores benefits and drawbacks of zeolite applications in this regard.

The aim of this trial was to determine whether the selenium status of suckling calves could be improved by supplementing their dams' diet with organic Se instead of sodium selenite. A herd of 103 Hereford cows, which were on grass paddocks all year round, was divided into two groups. Both groups had free access to a mineral supplement that contained 30 mg of Se/kg; for one group the source of the Se was a Se yeast product, and for the other group the source was sodium selenite. The basal feed contained .02 mg of Se/kg DM. During the trial, the mean daily consumption of the mineral supplement was approximately 110 g/cow. The calving season started in the middle of March and ended in the middle of May. Blood samples were taken from 11 cows and their calves in the yeast group and from nine in the selenite group at the end of April and again at the beginning of June, and milk samples were taken at the same times. At both samplings, the concentration of Se in whole blood and the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in the erythrocytes of the cows and calves in the yeast group were higher than in the samples from the animals in the selenite group. The same pattern was seen for plasma, except for the cows at the first sampling. The mean concentrations of Se in whole blood from calves in the yeast and selenite groups were 130 and 84 microg/L, respectively, and plasma concentrations were 48 and 34 microg/ L, respectively. Mean Se concentration in the milk from the yeast group (17.3 microg/L) was higher than that in milk from the selenite group (12.7 microg/L). There were significant correlations (r = .59 to .68) between the concentrations of Se in the cow's milk or cow's whole blood compared with Se concentrations in the calves whole blood and plasma or with the erythrocyte GSH-Px activity of the calves. The Se status of the calves in the selenite group was considered to be marginal, but the status of the calves in the yeast group was considered to be adequate. Supplementation of the suckler cows' diet with organic Se in the form of Se yeast rather than sodium selenite improved the Se status of their calves when the Se was mixed into a mineral supplement containing 30 mg of Se/kg. In practice, such supplementation would probably eliminate the risk of nutritional muscular degeneration in suckling calves.  相似文献

Parentage analysis is of vital importance for hatchery production and breeding programmes. Two multiplex PCR protocols including seven tropical spiny lobster (Panulirus homarus) microsatellites (Pho‐G06, Pho‐G25, Pho‐G53, Pho‐G62, Pho‐G74, Pho‐G89 and Pho‐G100) were introduced for parentage assignment. All loci were polymorphic with allele sizes from 113 to 337 base pairs (bp), observed alleles (k) from two to seven and polymorphic information content (PIC) of 0.25 to 0.73. Twenty‐four stage‐3 phyllosoma larvae (39 days posthatching) were collected for paternity exclusion study using selected microsatellites. Exclusion‐based parentage analysis unambiguously assigned 83% of fry (20 of 24) to a single female parent. Of ten putative female parents, five have contributed to the 20 allocated offspring, with one being true parent of 11. Four others were assigned to two or more potential female parents, probably due to genotyping error or the presence of null allele. The exclusion power (EP) for the seven loci varied between 13% and 54% with known genotypes of one parent (P1) and 19% and 71% for given the genotypes of both parents (P2). The theoretical combined parentage exclusion (cEP) power for all seven microsatellites was P1 = 95% and P2 = 99%. The power of discrimination for each locus varied between 0.18 and 0.86. This report presents the first study to utilize microsatellite markers for successful parentage assignment of P. homarus. The selected microsatellites provide a practical tool for parentage analysis in hatchery production of juveniles as well as in future commercial breeding programme of tropical spiny lobsters.  相似文献

Five Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) microsatellites (Gmo8, Gmo19, Gmo35, Gmo37 and Tch11) were selected for parentage assignment. All markers were co‐amplified using dye‐labelled primers and sized by automated sample processing in a 3130xl Genetic Analyser. The genotyping of samples was reproducible and alleles from all loci could be genotyped confidently (precision and accuracy above 99.7 and 99.1% respectively). The number of alleles, observed allelic and genotypic frequencies were calculated. A population database was established for fish originating from randomly selected wild‐caught Norwegian coastal‐ and North‐East Arctic cod. Combined paternity exclusion and the probability of match were 99.97 and 1.5 × 10?9 respectively. The multiplex assay system was used successfully for parental assignment of 2336 juveniles from different mass spawning breeding tanks. Of all offspring, 91.2% were assigned to a single parental pair. In total, 523 different matings were recorded, and 69 of 70 dams and all of the 30 sires contributed to the offspring.  相似文献
